What Might The First Daughters Wear To The Inaugural Balls?

01/14/2009 at 04:00 PM ET

Whatever your politics, there are many reasons to look forward to Inauguration Day. For the first time in years, we’re going to have little girls in the White House! One of the things we can’t wait to see is what First Daughters Sasha Obama, 7, and Malia Obama, 10, will wear on the biggest day of their lives. Not only do they have the Inaugural Ceremony and Ball, there’s also a kids’ ball afterward for all of the children who are now a part of the extended political family in Washington. We’re told that while the girls may opt for tea-length dresses with fuller skirts and shiny fabrics for the grown-up parties, they’ll want shorter, brighter and less formal dresses for the kids’ party. We came up with some looks we’d love to see them wear for the balls — check them out and tell us which are your favorites!

In case you were wondering, Bonpoint is in the running, and told Women’s Wear Daily they sent “cotton satin frocks for the evening — in cream for Malia and anthracite gray for Sasha — embroidered with semi-precious stones at the neckline.”

JEWEL TONES (pictured above)
With the fabric rose accent at the neckline of Blush by Us Angels’ Rose Bubble Dress ($99), Sasha will have a ball! David’s Bridal sleeveless satin dress with v-neck and ruched organza sash at the waist ($99) for Malia would coordinate nicely with Sasha’s satiny frock but have a more grown-up look. We’d pair dyed-to-match Touch Ups Abby Metallic shoes ($48 ) with each.

BALLET FANTASY

For this ballet fantasy theme, we imagined Sasha in this ethereal boatneck tea-length satin and organza dress from Kirstie Kelly for Disney Fairy Tale Weddings ($215). Since mom Michelle Obama is a huge fan of J. Crew, we think she may pick a dress from CrewCuts, the brand’s children’s line. The skirt of their ankle-length silk taffeta Anastasia dress ($148 ) would make Malia feel like a princess, too! Jessica Simpson’s Leve shoes ($59) resemble toe shoes so they would be perfect for both girls — and so comfortable they wouldn’t need to kick off their shoes to dance!

DISCO BALL

We looked to a disco ball for inspiration for these looks! The sequins on black on LaRok Kids’ Black Sweetie Dress ($140) for Sasha would look adorable with Kenneth Cole Reaction’s What a Dress mini-heel ($40). Malia’s Flowers By Zoe’s Black with Square Sequins Dress ($99) is a twist on traditional sequins, and could be paired with Annie’s Doreen black patent with rhinestone strappy sandals ($44).

PATRIOTIC

The girls may not want to wear identical dresses, but since LaRok’s Cote D’Azure Dress ($118 ) came in ultra-patriotic Mai Tai Red and Dive Blue, we thought they may want to wear these sleeveless, scoopneck, minis with tiered ruffle overlay cascading from the neckline. We’d pair them with different shoes though — Touch Ups Missy clear vinyl and rhinestone open toe sandal ($43) for Sasha and Jessica Simpson’s Layla mary jane chunky pump in sparkly ruby ($50) for Malia.

SOLID GOLD

We just fell in love with J. Crew’s CrewCuts Jasmine dress ($250) for Sasha. With its swirly floral metallic jacquard fabric, sweet cap sleeves, practical patch pockets and a crinoline underskirt, she’ll mimic mom Michelle’s classic style. We’d pair it with Jessica Simpson’s gold Stephen ballet flats ($39). Malia can pretend she’s Diana Ross from her Supremes days in Single Girls’ sequin shift dress ($120), complete with Tribeca’s Vanity Pair strappy gold sandals ($37).

I actually like all of them!!! But the Ballet Fantasy is the most beautiful, I think. But I don’t think the Obama girls are too much into “fluffy, girly” stuff!!! I like the red and blue dresses for the grown-up parties and the disco looks for the kids’ party.

Re: Bonpoint . . . do you really think the Obama’s will choose a French designer boutique for their girls’ clothes? I think it might cause a bit of controversy and take the spotlight away from everything else. You know how people look for something to rage about!!!

I must say, I’m kind of surprised that the Ballet themed dresses are getting the most votes; not that they aren’t beautiful dresses, but they just don’t look like they fit what we’ve seen of the Obama girls’ personalities and style.

I can see them in something much more modern and fun like the Disco or Gold themes. The metallics would look great on them!

I love the solid gold theme, must get a similar dress to those for my child.NOW!

I was talking to someone recently who was just back from Hawaii and while she was there she checked out a store she’d seen advertised that made designer dresses out of recycled muumuus. The owner told her that while the Obama’s were on vacation earlier, Barack had brought in a couple of his grandmother’s old muumuus to be made into dresses for his daughter’s to wear on inauguration day. I don’t know if this is true or not, but if it is then I love him even more…what a cool idea!! We’ll see next week I guess.

The best of them all are the Solid Gold. These dresses would be perfect for the girls. To me they fits their personalities, and their more up-to-date, and in style.

I like the gold dresses, I think they’re appropriate for their ages and will look good on their skin tone. I have never knew they had a kids’ ball, that should be so much fun for the girls.

whatever they pick i’m sure they’ll be adorable, and their pals the biden’s grandkids too. my guess is the only requirement might be something that twirls well for sasha, i can just picture the little one dancing on her daddy’s feet at one of the balls.
you’ve posted so many great choices, but i like the solid gold and the ballet fantasy sets the best.

i too like ballet fantasy and solid gold the best. but if the past dictates how they’ll dress the girls, solid gold seems to be more in line with how they dress. i love all the poofy extra girly dresses, but Michelle seems to put the girls in elegant, yet simple frocks. they’re always dressed so lovely regardless.

Mom Said It

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
