Los Angeles Sparks forward Candace Parker and her husband, Sacramento Kings player Shelden Williams, are expecting their first child this spring. Candace — a former No. 1 draft pick and winner of MVP and Rookie of the Year honors in 2008 — will continue to work out in anticipation of the 2009 WNBA season, which begins in June. She adds,

“Shelden and I are very excited to be expanding our family. We feel blessed and look forward to becoming parents.”

Candace, 22, and Shelden, 25, were married in November.

What wonderful news! Candace went to high school in my town (although I went to a different high school than the one she attended) and she graduated a year ahead of me, with some of my friends. It was big news when she was the number one recruit in the country and ended up going to Tennessee, but somehow I missed the news that she was drafted to LA. Congrats, Candace!

Yay for them! They seem like really down to earth people. My MIL was Shelden’s kindergarten teacher and when his team came to our city, he sent her tickets. So nice!

Hilary, Candace also went to school in my town! Go Naperville! That’s so cool! Congrats to her…hopefully she’ll visit again.

Her career is really blooming. I’m surprised she chose now to get pregnant.

I went to college at UT with Candace, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a more genuine person. Congrats to her and her husband, and I wish them the best of luck with their new addition and her new career! I only had one class with her, but it was enough to cause me to realize what a great person and hard worker she is.

Hello Candace!

I am so happy for you and Sheldon! Thank you very much for representing women’s basketball with such class. I was an assistant coach at one of the schools that played during the 2006-2007. I currently teach at a universtiy and we will be teaching on women in sports. I will be focusing most of my topic on you. You are an amazing lady! Keep God first and the best is yet to come.
