Jett Travolta's Death Attributed to Seizure Disorder

REUTERS/Courtesy of the Travolta family/Rogers & Cowan/Landov

Update: The cause of Jett’s death has been attributed to a seizure disorder, a friend of the Travolta’s tells PEOPLE. Official results are yet to be disclosed.

See a collection of photos released by the family here.

Originally posted January 2nd: Jett Travolta, the 16-year-old son of actor John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston, died Friday while on vacation with his family in the Bahamas.

Michael Ossi, a lawyer for the family, told Reuters that Jett suffered a seizure at his family’s vacation home at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel on Grand Bahama Island. According to police spokeswoman Loretta Mackey, who spoke with the Associated Press, Jett hit his head in a bathtub Friday morning and was declared dead at Rand Memorial Hospital.

According to a police statement, a caretaker found Jett unconscious in the bathroom around 10 a.m. An autopsy is being pursued to determine the exact cause of death. Attempts were made to revive him, but he died at the scene, Michael said. The death was first reported by TMZ.

Jett, who had a history of seizures, was the only son of John, 54, and Kelly, 46. They also have a daughter, Ella Bleu, 8. In a message on Kelly’s website, the family shares,

“We would like to extend our deepest and most heartfelt thanks to everyone who has sent their love and condolences. Jett was the most wonderful son that two parents could ever ask for and lit up the lives of everyone he encountered. We are heartbroken that our time with him was so brief. We will cherish the time we had with him for the rest of our lives. We have received many messages of condolence from around the world and we want to thank everyone for their prayers and support. It has meant so much to us. It is a beautiful reminder of the inherent goodness in the human spirit that gives us hope for a brighter future.”

Just a terrible, terrible thing to happen. Nobody should ever have to feel the pain of losing a child. I feel so badly for the Travoltas. Rest in Peace, Jett.

- Natasha on

That’s terribly unfortunate and my sympathies go out to them. I feel especially bad for Ella, who lost her big brother. It has long been rumored that Jett had Autism, but maybe his “hidden illness” was in fact a seizure disorder. I hope they made lots of wonderful memories on vacation with Jett this past week. What a horrible way to start the new year.

- Colleen on

Oh gosh! I can’t believe this! I doubt the Travolta’s will be checking the net at this horrible time, but in case they or someone they know happens to read this site, I would just like to say I send my condolences to mum, dad, and Ella. TMZ are reporting that the police have stated Jett hit his head while in the bath. I don’t know what to say, really. Just awful to lose a child, this is not the natural order of things. My prayers are with the family.

- phoebe on

I’ve been in those shoes myself, and I just pray today for the family. However, the years we spend on this Earth with our loved ones is just a blip compared to the eternity we will spend with them in Heaven. I firmly believe that. Prayers today for the Preston-Travolta family.

- Jay on

I don’t care what anyone says about the way John & Kelly lived their lives or whether they wouldn’t “publicly admit” to what condition Jett had, it’s such a tragedy to lose a child.

I can’t imagine how the pair of them are feeling. My heart goes out to them.

- Cezzie on

My heart just breaks for them. I can’t even imagine. That’s a tragedy no parent should ever have to go through.

what a terrible thing. i was truly shocked to see this headline. my thoughts go out to the family.

as for jett having autism- i am a special ed. major at college and one of my professors actually worked with the travolta’s and jett on how to cope with autism.

- jacky on

No one… and I mean NO ONE should ever have to have their own child go before them. Just nothing compares to the heartache and pain derived from it. My grandmother had her brother die before her parents, and she has told me so many times that they were never the same and it was the worst thing they ever had to endure.

- Kat on

I heard this on yahoo. So unfortunate. I wish the Travolta family peace.

Oh my god! Im sooo shocked. Nobody deserves to witness the death of their child, specially at such a young age :( this isn’t the best time for celebrities’ children I guess. First, Mia Farrow now John Travolta. They’re an amazing family, Im so sorry.

- Artemis on

This is absolutely horrible. Poor, poor family.

- Ls on

Speaking as a parent who lost an older son, there is nothing on this Earth any worse than losing a child. It’s truly a parent’s worst nightmare. We were out to dinner when we glanced at a large flat-screen TV and saw the news. I nearly got sick right at the table as those emotions came flooding back. My heart breaks at the loss of Jett. I know he had health issues, with autism and a seizure disorder, but NOTHING can prepare you for the loss of a child…nothing. My thoughts and prayers are with the Travolta/Preston Families.

- SouthernBelle on

Nikka, it has been reported by his parents that he had Kawasaki Disease but many, myself included, believe he is actually autistic and that his parents refuse to treat him because Scientologists believe that autistic people are “degraded beings” (not my words but Scientology’s) and that they will themselves to have this disorder. It was also widely reported that he suffered from a seizure disorder that they wouldn’t treat because of Scientology’s belief in not using pharmaceuticals to treat disorders. The symptoms of Kawasaki disease and autism are completely different with one being a physiological affliction and one being a neurological disorder. There are a few articles online that definitely point to Jett being on the autistic spectrum and the Travolta’s fear on people knowing.

I feel so sorry for Jett and Ella. I can’t imagine what she is going through to be 8 years old and losing her big brother. Hopefully he is at peace now.

- Devon on

Ohhhhh, just heartbreaking. They say that when you bury your parents that you bury your past and when you bury your children, you bury your future.

How sad and horrible. I hope that Jett did not suffer any pain, at least. My thoughts are with the Travoltas.

- Susan on

Nikka, I didn’t know that Jett had Kawasaki disease and am extremely surprised to hear that news. It’s very treatable and doesn’t normally cause death because doctors and/or parents see the symptoms and begin treatment at an early age. Kawasaki disease is an illness that involves the skin, mouth and lymph nodes, and most often affects kids under age 5. The cause is unknown, but if the symptoms are recognized early, kids with Kawasaki disease can fully recover within a few days. Untreated, it can lead to serious complications that can affect the heart.
Kawasaki disease occurs in 19 out of every 100,000 kids in the United States. It is most common among children of Japanese and Korean descent, but can affect all ethnic groups.

- SouthernBelle on

OMG, I can’t believe this! I can’t imagine the pain of losing a child. My heart goes out to them :(

- Jade on

Oops, sorry. I hadn’t read the detailed account of Kawasaki Disease in the post about Baylee Thomas Wylee, as I just started with the story about Jett and hadn’t read that far. Didn’t mean to be redundant. :(

- SouthernBelle on

Jett was such a handsome young man, what an awful tragedy. So sorry to all his family and friends.

prayers go out to for john and the rest of his family. hope the travolta family gets all the support they need one one should loose there child in that way unfor Epilepsy is common with children with autism if he had autism (as noone knows for sure) my godson has both.

r.i.p jett

- gail on

Devon: You “believe” he was autistic? Based on what exactly? Because you heard rumors and innuendos? And since his parents never confirm or deny, it must be true? How presumtuous and rude.

How sad that people think it’s for them to decide the medical condition of someone else’s child. Someone who, by the way, you have never even seen in person!

I wish everyone would just ignore the autism nonsense, because the fact is, no one here KNOWS anything about this boy’s medical condition… and it’s completely irrelevant to the fact that he’s now gone.

- Janna on

John Travolta grew up in my town, went to school with my uncle and my mom and dad went to school with his sister and grandfather with his mom. I am so sorry for his loss,I will keep him and his family in my prayers. God bless all of them in this difficult time.

- liz on

Wow, this is horrible. First Lark Previn, now Jett. My condolences go out to the entire family: John, Kelly and of course little Ella. May he rest in peace.

- Charlie on

Devon, thank you for your explanation !!

Jenna, I think Devon’s post was very informative, whether she’s right or no, and that’s why she specified that it’s what *she* believes, not that she knows that’s true. And she did have good points, regarding scientology and the modern medicine. SHe simply stated her opinion

- Nikka on

I am so sorry for the Travolta family. I will be praying for them during this difficult time.

- M on

Words can’t express what John, and Kelly are going through. I am a mother to a 2 1/2 yr. old autistic boy. I know the Travolata’s prefer to keep what Jett had private, and whatever Jett went through, anything that is “outside of the norm” is such a rough way to live. You would die for your child to make them better, and beg to have the condition instead of your child. I hope Kelly and John and Ella find comfort within each other. It isnt natural to have to bury your child….and I would not wish it on anybody. My prayers go out to all of you and if you or somebody read this, my heart cries out to all 3 of you during this difficult time. I wish you all much love, and support. Take care of each other!!!
Love,
Colleen

OMG! My heart is breaking for this family!!!

Geez so many tragic deaths lately! My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. I am a huge John Travolta fan and no how much he just adores his children.

- JM on

My sympathy goes out to them!! A few nights ago I had a weird dream that I went up to John Travolta sitting at a bar and I gave him a big hug!!! He was looking at hospital papers. It was truly weird because I felt the pain of something going on in my brain and could tell something was wrong!! I was very shocked to find out that his son had passed! I didn’t know he had a son, but I think my dream was trying to tell me that something was going on with a brain issue. My prayers and heart go out to them tremendously!!!

- Lalita on

OMG! I just found out today and saw it on the website. I’m so, so, sorry for the Travolta family. This really is a tragedy. My condolences and prayers go out to John, Kelly & Ella and the rest of the Travolta family. May god bless you all from this terrible tragedy. John is a wonderful actor. I have always liked his movies and also Kelly’s movies too. Again, so sorry for their loss. Nobody should have to go through losing a child. God bless John, Kelly and especilly Ella.

Gosh, that’s awful news. =[ Especially so near Christmas. Thoughts are with the family.

- Denise on

omg. rest in peace.

- camille on

My heart goes out to the entire family. I couldn’t believe it when I saw this on People. RIP Jett.

- jasmine on

I sorry for Jett’s loss. Even more sorry if this could have been prevented. Police reports state he was last seen on the 1st going into the bathroom and was not found until 10:00 am on the 2nd by his caretaker. How awful that he could have possibly been saved if someone would have paid attention to where he was at for that period of time. I’m 36 years old and I know when I’m around people who care for me if I’m not feeling well and I’m in the bathroom for half an hour, let alone overnight that someone would have come to check on me.

- Danielle on

Janna, I wasn’t trying to offend anyone but from what I have learned about autism (which is fairly decent as it is convered quite extensively in most psychology courses which I have taken with my degree in Criminal Justice) Jett exhibits very typical symptoms of being on the autism spectrum. It is from these pictures I base my opinion and from nothing else. I never said I was right since there is no way to know for sure but I’m 90% sure of it. By all means prove me wrong and I’ll be more than happy to be wrong since autism is a cruel and devestating disorder that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. I was also stating Scientology’s stance on the issue, which is deplorable. How can one belong to a “religion” that deems their child as a “degraded being.” Had it been me in that situation I would have told the “religion” to put it where the sun don’t shine and left. Again these are just my opinions and I would loved to be proved wrong for Jett’s case. He didn’t deserve to die at the tender age of 16.

Just a question though, you harped on me for answering Nikka’s question but a poster before me stated that one her prof’s worked with John Trvolta and Jett to treat his autism. Doesn’t that, sort of, validate my belief that he is on the austic spectrum? I’m not trying to be snarky (because it is very difficult to determine someone’s intention in writing).

- Devon on

My heart goes out the the family in this time of tragedy…..May friends and family provide comfort to Kelly and John and Ella….

- Aitch on

As a parent raising a son with autism, I have no doubt that Jett also had this disorder. Siezures are a very common co-occuring condition with autism.
It makes my heart hurt knowing that the Travolta’s lost their child.
I hope they find strength to get through this time and eventually find peace.

- Christine on

A tragdey indeed. My heart and prayers go out to Mr. Travolta and his entire family.

May you somehow feel the peace of God during this sad time in your lives.

- Maureen on

Oh how incredibly sad! My heart goes out to the family! Oh my goodness I can’t believe it… 16… so young!

- Shalini on

This is so sad and my heart goes out to John,Kelly and Ella. Also for all of those who are like this could be pervented, scientology had to do with it or it happened because they weren’t watching their son shame on you. It’s basically saying they killed their son how disgusting. Don’t you think the what ifs are going through their minds. A mother and father who’ve known him sense he was in the womb and a little girl who lost her big brother, so instead at pointing the finger let them grieve. They lost their Son.

- sage on

This is a terrible thing that has happened. My thoughts and prayers go out to their family during this awful time.

- Afton Hunt on

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family… however, it doesn’t seem that Jett died of anything related to Kawasakis (which is a disease affecting the heart, not a seizure disorder — as I’ve heard Kelly refer to it as before). It sounds to me like Jett had some form of seizure disorder that perhaps began occuring around the same time he was diagnosed with kawasakis. But Kawasakis is known for causing heart attacks or heart conditions later in life, not seizures… and most often it causes no long term problems at all. I’m not sure where the confusion came from, but people need to stop speculating.

- Rachel on

I can’t believe this happened. So tragic. Must be horrible to lose a child. My thoughts and prayers are with them. R.I.P Jett <3

This is such a sad tragedy. I was so incredibly shocked when I read this story. This is so sad and my heart goes out to John, Kelly, and Ella. This is no way to begin a new year! :( RIP Jett

what a horrible thing! My thoughts go out to John and Kelly in this terrible time.

- Silvermouse on

My thoughts and prayers are with their family. My heart aches for them.

- Mandy on

Conjecturing about an illness a child may or may not have had or how the parents may or may not have treated said illness is simply crass and unacceptable…especially in light of the child dying today!

Continuing to judge someone’s parenting and choice of religion on the absolute WORST day of their life is beyond comprehension!

May the Travolta family feel supported during this horrible time!

- Jennifer on

I’m with some of you in saying that no matter how you think they’ve raised their son (if it’s not the way that you would), it doesn’t mean they deserve this. I’m positive that Jett was very much loved and my heart just goes out to John, Kelly and Ella.

This Broke My Heart,When I Heard.I Was Like “What? No,This Can’t Happen!”I Can Not Imagine The Pain,That John,Kelly,And Ella Are Going Through Right Now!Nobody Should Ever Have To Go Through The Pain Of Losing Of Child. But To John,And Kelly,Remember,Jett Is In A Better Place,And You Will See Him In Heaven! The Travolta Family Is In My Prayers,And I Hope They Can Stay Strong,For Their Little Girl
:( :( (

- Catherine on

Absolutely aweful. My heart goes out to John and his family. Prayers will be said as well. Terrible thing to happen.

- Mandy on

Usually people don’t die from the actual seizure if he had one…people die from a bleed in the brain. He probably had something else going on in his brain like a bleed which would have made him fall.

John Travolta and Kelly Preston seem like very nice people. No matter what happened or their beliefs no one should go through what they’re going through right now.

- SH on

It doesn’t matter what Jett suffered from. It isn’t our business. Just because his family chose a public life. that doesn’t mean that they have to reveal anything about their children’s private lives and I respect the Travolta’s for that. The chose to lead their lives in the public while their children did not. They clearly loved their children and were devoted to them and no one should ever have to deal with the death of a child. God bless them and I hope and pray that the press respects their privacy and leaves them’ alone.

- Robin on

I was in complete shock when I heard the news, I’m so saddened by this, especially for the Travoltas…..John seems like such an awesome dad, he’s very sensitive, and such a down to earth soul. I can ONLY imagine what he and his family must be going through, what devastation!!! From what I read they stated that Jett was diagnosised with Kawaski disease, some time ago, which would result in having seizures….they aren’t sure if it was related to the disease, they will be performing an autopsy…..
Thoughts and prayers to the family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Maria on

SORRY, WANTED TO CORRECT MY STATEMENT ABOVE:
KAWASKI DISEASE DOES NOT CAUSE SEIZURES! Im sure he would have been on anti seizure meds if he had episodes….totall unexpected Im sure…so sad!!

- Maria on

Oh no!! How awful. :*( A parent’s worst nightmare. My heart is broken for them.

I really am so very, very sorry for your loss…

My heart, as well as all of the others and many around the world feel for them in this time of sorrow. This is soo so so sad and terrible. My God be with them in this time of need.

- Mom of Boys on

I vividly recall when Princess Diana died, John Travolta reached out with open arms to the Royal family pledging anything he could do to help young William and Harry’s in the loss of their Mother. Now, it is the Travolta-Preston family feeling the ache of their own terrible loss.

To John, Kelly, Ella Blue and your family, my deepest heartfelt condolences go out to you today. May you have the strength, courage and love to repair your broken hearts. I am so sorry for your loss.

- shidley on

How horrible! Like a few other posters, I first saw this on Yahoo. I actually had to read it twice to make sure I was reading correctly. I completely agree with the posters who have said that whatever condition (and, as someone with a mild Autism Spectrum Disorder, let me tell you that most of those of us with ASD hate it when it’s referred to as an illness. It is NOT an illness, anymore than Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, etc. are illnesses. They are disorders/conditions, most of them genetic. Trust me, we don’t like being called ill!) Jett may have had, whether or not someone should have checked on him, etc., we really need to keep those thoughts to ourselves.

The Travoltas just lost their child. The last thing they need to hear is people speculating about how/why he died and basically criticizing their parenting!

Too bad that a lovely page of condolances has to be spoiled with a few judgemental comments.

I don’t have any words…. Deepest sympathies to John, Kelly, and Ella.

- Gabrielle on

I’m still in terrible shock over this, just awful. I want to say something about the scientology/autism thing, without making specific reference to poor Jett. Scientology, as I have understood it, does not recognise autism as the general population does, they regard the children and adults who are autistic as ‘imperfect beings’ or whatever the exact words are. I think this is what people are bothered by, and considering the implication of this ‘belief’, they are very right to be bothered. Whether Jett was autistic or not (and I have my own belief about this, but an article about the poor boy’s passing is not the place to be airing that, I don’t feel), it is, as another reader put it, deplorable to not get vital and proven treatment for a child because of membership to a religion (I have my views on that as well, but again, not the time or place).

The point is, we probably should reserve most speculation about Jett’s tragic death until there is some kind of medical report. Truly, we don’t know what happened for sure yet, and with all the different aspects of controversy that has surrounded this family, the imagination could run away. Right now, I just have the deepest sympathies for the Travoltas, and will be thinking of them, especially beautiful Ella, who only had a few short years with her big brother.

- phoebe on

My thoughts and sympathies are with them, what a horrible start to a year for them. So tragic.

- Chloe on

My heart goes out to John, Kelly and Ella. I cried when I saw this tragic news on here. I heard something about it on NBC, but didn’t pay attention. Thanks to CBB for being there.

- Molly Fanton on

Jennifer and some others, I have to respectfully disagree.

Of course it would be wrong to go up to the Travolta family and, in their hearing, conjecture about an illness their child may or may not have had or how they may or may not have treated said illness is “crass and unacceptable” BUT is is utterly right and responsible to discuss that in a public forum. Since I cannot imagine any of the Travolta family will be spending any time on Celebrity Babies (no offense!) then why s there a problem?

If they were hiding an illness or not treating it correctly because of “religious” beliefs then it should be discussed by everyone within their society because only by doing that can change occur. You have a “right” to your beliefs as long as no one is harmed by them. If the family’s scientology meant that the boy did not receive proper care for an illness or an illness was not acknowledged then they have done WRONG. By talking about out, conjecture or not, we can move towards a society where parents cannot harm their children by carrying out their beliefs.

John Travolta, Kelly and Ella: I`m so sorry for your loss of your son Jett. I dont know much about him and have seen only very few pictures of him, but if he was autistic I`m glad you sheltered him from the media spotlight, because for him being chased by papparazzis with cameras blinding him with their lights it would have been unberable for him.. So that you choose to only focusing on your healthy child Ella in the media world,I now belive it was the right thing to do.
This must be so heartbreaking for you all, suddenly your daughter has become an onlychild, and you only have this one child left.¨
It will be a heartache losing your son forever, but maybe you can find comfort in your faith, knowing that Jett is in a better place right now, healthy and happy, waiting for the day that you all will join him in heaven.

I’m stunned to hear this. How sad, so very very sad.

My heart is aching for the Travolta’s. I agree, no one should have to go through losing a child. This is not the time for opinions about his medical condition or their beliefs. Theres a time and a place for all of that. Right now, sympathy is all that is needed. I am truly sorry for their loss and cant imagine the pain that Jett’s mom, dad and sister are going through.
And yes, Kawasaki Disease does cause seizures. My son was diagnosed with it 2 years ago, only after suffering a seizure. It can affect all blood vessels in the body, not just coronary. 2 years later my son still has them.

I remember, and I remember his parents choosing the name Jett. I recall thinking it suited him well – from John really as we all know he loves to fly.

Their son and brother is gone. I’m feeling so sad for the family and hugging my own Little Ones ever so tightly.

I was heartbroken when I first read this news yesterday. What a horrible way to start off a new year. And it happened on my birthday yesterday. My deepest sincere thoughts and prayers are with the family–John, Kelly, and Ella. No parent should have to bury their child at such a young teenage age.

I read in several reports that Jett was last seen going into the bathroom Thursday evening, and yet he wasn’t found until Friday morning…..did nobody notice he was missing????

- Kay on

I like all the readers and a mother myself can’t even imagine what it would be like to lose a child. A child of only 16. But what is even more heart wrenching is having an 8 year old child who loses her sibling. So much confusion, angst, hurt, anger all those things that a parent feels will be 10 fold for a little child who can barley understand that 2×2=4, My sympathy goes out to all those who morn.

- mary on

My condolences to the family. My heart goes out to them. Bless.

- Denise Briggs on

Mary, I agree with you. One of the first thoughts I had when I processed this was ‘oh gosh, poor little Ella’. I mean, for sure we all think of the parents, but sometimes the siblings get pushed aside when people consider family grief. I don’t mean to imply that anyone here thinks that way, because I think most of us have children, and can anticipate how much the loss of a sibling would affect them, but one newspaper I read today didn’t even spell Ella’s name correctly. That to me, says that they barely gave a consideration to her or her immeasurable loss. Once again, my heart goes out to the whole family here, John, Kelly, Ella, and the extended family and friends who knew and loved Jett.

- phoebe on

Kay,
According to those who were there, the reports are wrong. Michael McDermott, a friend and the family’s lawyer, says it was actually a very short window from the time Jett left his bedroom and went into the bathroom and when he was found.
At this tragic time, I sincerely hope the Travolta family doesn’t have to also contend with rumors that they were negligent toward their son. Unfortunately, knowing people’s love for gossip and scandal…

- Me on

How horrible for the family. I offer my sincerest condolences to John, Kelly, Ella and the entire Travolta-Preston clan. Rest in Peace, Jett. Your precious memory will live on forever.

- Sarah on

If he really had a serious illness then it would be a crime to not get him a proper help. Parents are responsible to keep their children healthy and alive, let it be ilness, danger, drawning etc. Like when Jehova witnesses dont allow the life saving blood transfusion and have their children seized like it happened with the Vancouver sextuplets few years ago. Everyone can have any beliefs they want, as long as it doesnt endanger others. And theoretically, if they wouldnt get help for autism why would they get it for kawasaki. It wouldnt make sense, and thats one sign it may have not been autism

Plus if he really had autism, who else would be able to do more for the public awarness then someone people know and love so much. Like Jenny McCarthy she does an amazing job for autism and she is one of those who can really make a difference in a health care and public awarness.

- Nikka on

I don’t believe that this is really the time to start placing blame. What the Travolta/Prestons did or didn’t do is not our buisness. Lets not accuse them of anything as they are having the worst time of their lives at the present moment. My prayers are with the family.

I am very sad for John, Kelly and the entire family. My nephew has Kawaski…he had none of the signs/symptons/issues that Jett had…..I don’t know what Jett suffered from, but his parents did/do have the choice not to share that with anyone. My only question is he goes into the bathroom at night and is not found until the next day? just sad…no matter what or how this happened a child has passed away and a family mourns.

- Maxine on

I was shocked and stunned when I first saw this and gasped “What?” in disbelief. It’s just too heartbreaking and sad. It’s sad as well people are often so quick to blame the parents, be it for their Scientology beliefs, denying autism, not medicating, etc… regardless of who they are and what they believe they are still grieving parents who have just lost a precious child. People should really have more compassion and respect. I feel so badly for them and then to be BLAMED for it? Inexcusable.

i was just thinking a friends mother died in exactly the same way about 6 months ago (if hitting his the head in the bath while having a fit was correct) its a terrible thing to happen the whole family must be going through unbelievable hurt right now and no doubt guilt as would most families in the situation. most say “if only….” when this sort of thing happens its awful as it makes the sadness worse, the travoltas couldnt have done any more to help. they had 16 years with a lovely son its just a shame it wasnt more. all the parents out there will surely be thinking of the travolta at this heartbreaking time.

Along with everyone else I really cannot believe it. It is a bit like when Heath Ledger passed away – I just didnt think it could be true. My sincerest condolences to the whole Travolta family, my thoughts and prayers are with them. x.

- Rebecca Lobb on

According to TMZ, the police are sticking to what they said about Jett not being found for a while, but that the lawyer is saying that the nannies may have been up during the night so the time frame was cut down of when Jett could’ve entered the bathroom to when he was found. Honestly I don’t know what anyone is trying to imply with all this. Maybe it’s just a detail (and they do seem to be reporting all details as usual in this kind of case), but it seems to me like a lot of people want to dig out the bad side of this family. They seem to be forgetting that a family has lost a child. If they can’t have respect for Kelly and John, at least have it for Ella, surely people can see that no matter what is said, she is a little innocent angel who has lost her big brother. I still feel that it would be wrong to comment on the scientology controversy (because I think that’s where the percieved hostility is coming from) that had dogged poor Jett until we know more, and that won’t happen just yet. Sadly, for whatever reason, I don’t think Jett’s memory will be left alone for a long time.

- phoebe on

Firstly, I would just like to say how terribly sad this is and how sorry I am.

I would like also to refer people to the beautiful and very moving statement which Jett’s parents have issued on the loss of their son:

http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20249900,00.html

Whatever people may feel about Scientology or, indeed, any other belief or religion, please bear in mind that a child has died and a mother and father have lost their son, and a little girl her big brother. Like the rest of you, I have no idea of the personal and family lives of the Travolta-Prestons but I do know that even if someone follows a particular faith, it doesn’t mean they necessarily do so to the letter. Hence, there are Roman Catholics who use contraception, who divorce despite the Church believing both are sinful, and Christians and Muslims who support gay-rights even though traditionally neither religion has.

I think we should all be careful firstly in making any assumptions about Jett Travolta’s family, especially given these tragic circumstances, and where their supposed religious beliefs are concerned and also Jett’s health. I guess it just feels very intrusive and distasteful.

Lastly, I’d just like to share with you a quote from Kelly Preston on motherhood which is heartbreaking to read now. In 2001, Kelly and Ella Travolta were photographed for Joyce Ostin’s book Hollywood Moms, which featured black and white portraits of famous women and their daughters (no sons!) in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness. Beside the photograph of her with Ella, Kelly had written, in response to Joyce’s question on the most nourishing moments the sitters had shared with their own mothers or daughters:

“One of the most amazing moments of my life happened a few days after Ella was born. I had just finished nursing her and she had fallen asleep, so I laid her down on the bed with me. It was my son Jett’s bedtime and he wandered in to kiss me goodnight. Normally it can take us up to an hour to get him to sleep, but he was exhausted from playing all day. When he saw how cozy we were he crawled into bed with ys, curled up in my arms, and fell asleep in five minutes. I had both of my babies peacefully asleep in my arms. I have never felt so happy or alive, nurturing my children and being by them.”

Rest in peace, Jett, and my love and best wishes to your family.

- Marie on

Nikka, autism is not recognized by Scientology as a real condition but more like a ‘disease’ of the mind, like a mental illness.
Unfortunately due to that Scientologists don’t belief it can and should be cured with medications.
I am not sure what Kawaski entitles or fall under but it has been reported that Jett had received medications for this in the past but unfortunately the cure did not last so his parents decided not to continue.
I think that’s where the difference lies in treatment according to Scientology towards both autism and Kawaski.

- Kim on

I just hope people don’t start trashing John and Kelly for their parenting, jut because they’re Scientologists. They lost their son and it sounds like they’re totally devastated over it. I hope people just leave them alone to grieve.

- Molly Fanton on

I am deeply saddened for the whole Travolta family.I have lost 2 people I knew to seizures, and my brother also went through a spell of having epilepsy.I send the whole family my prayers and thoughts.

- Heidi on

Not sure if this was addressed yet, but Jett had taken seizure meds for most of his life according to what I read today. Apparently they lost effectiveness in the last couple of years and he had stopped within the last 2 years I believe?
When you see pictures and video of Jett, he appears to be autistic or have some degree of “different” about him. Autism is an easy one to pin on him because it’s definitely associated with seziures.
Being private people, who knows if the Travoltas looked into therapy for Jett if he were in fact autistic or otherwise. After all, autism is usually treated with therapy as well as with a special diet among other things. I’m not certain but I don’t think there are many pharmaceutical medications out there for autism; it’s usually about detoxifying the body.
I know nothing really about Scientology. If autism makes someone imperfect in their eyes, wouldn’t it make sense to try to help that person to change them?
And also there are a host of different things that could have been going on with Jett. In that host of different things there are definitely ailments that cannot be cured or treated 100% that come with the risk of death at an early age. It’s really none of anyone’s business and this is probably why they haven’t talked about it.
Some celebrities use this as an opportunity for awareness but they don’t.
I’m sure their strong affiliation with Scientology ties in here too. I would think they care more about what the Scientology population feels rather than the general public. So by staying private they avoid certain confrontation from both sides.
Maybe they’d rather have speculation than to have the entire planet in on their business. John Travolta is a HUGE star so this would definitely be an issue~!
Those are my random thoughts.
Everything aside, I wish for them healing as they get through this. I cannot imagine what they’re going through.

- Karen on

Regardless of what happened or didn’t happen as far as Jett’s alleged autism and his parents denial or whatever, they have to live with the horror of losing their child. They’ve suffered enough. Whether or not we agree with their alleged choices, they were doing what they felt was best for their child. He was not neglected, he had two on call staff members with him @ all times, as well as his parents. The Travolta family have to live with the pain of knowing every day takes them farther away from the time they had with Jett and the pain of living without him. Let’s let this family grieve instead of point fingers. I’m sure we all don’t agree on parenting styles or religious preference either, but a mother and father have lost their son and that’s a horror we can all understand, even if we haven’t lived through it.

- Mary-Helen on

The exact same thing happened to my friend’s brother when he was 11. He had bad seizures( among other multiple mental and physical handicaps) and he died of a massive seizure; it simply lasted too long and it stopped his heart.

- impoguemahone on

My condolencs to the Travolta family. It just seems strange that we learned that Brian Littrell’s son Bailey has been diagnosed with the same disorder (Kawasaki disease) as Jett had. I pray they find a cure. No one should ever have to see their child leave this world. But I know hes in a better place.

- Gina on

From what I understand of the various statements concerning the timeline of Jett last being seen and then found the next morning. Jett’s parents ( John and Kelly )last saw him at 10p.m. when he went to bed. Again, the last time his parents saw him was when Jett went to bed. He was in the care of his two nannies during the night. John and Kelly assumed he was being taken care of by these two individuals untill the next morning. If they didn’t know he was hurt and needed attention. It was because they were not informed by these two people they had entrusted thier sons care to. I am sure John and Kelly did all they could to take care of their son. As to what happened during the night. Only the two caretakers can explain. I know I am only speculating as to what happen next. The seizure problaly happend in seconds and there was nothing anyone could have done. Because I can’t believe any of the people connected to this sad event would do anything to deliberatly hurt this innocent and sweet boy.

- rml on

My most sincere condolences on the loss of your son.

- Dania A. Stewart on

Yes, Brian Litrell’s son was diagnosed with Kawasaki, sadly, BUT, even though the Travolta’s have been so public about it being caused by cleaning products – ask any Kawasaki expert and look at the facts: the disease is not linked at this point to cleaning products. Also, seizures and Kawasaki Disease do NOT go hand-in-hand. This always annoyed me – celebrities telling the rest of the public things they state are facts and are, in fact, not close.

Still, my heart goes out to the family. There is nothing worse than losing a child. That should never happen. My grandmother watched my mom die and never recoered. It’s the worst thing.

- Erin on

My heart goes out to John & Kelley at this time. How awful for them!! Their hearts must be broken!!!! I can’t even imagine having to bury a child.
RIP Jett

- Jae on

It’s pretty obvious that Jett was developmentally disabled. His parents can deny that it’s autism all they want, likely due to pressure from Scientology, but there are videos out there that show he did have developmental disabilities. And, I believe Kelly did also admit that once, in an interview, though she attributes it to the effects of the seizures at a young age, from the Kawasaki. Regardless, if it’s autism or kawasaki, or whatever, he was developmentally delayed…it was obvious, they admitted it way back when…so I don’t think that’s up for argument. However, just because they don’t use the terms for his diagnosis that the public may want them to use, doesn’t mean they weren’t addressing the issues of his physical and mental health. He had 3 nannies. For all we know, they weren’t typical nannies. It very well could be that some of those caretakers were therapists or some other sort of treatment provider. Really, it’s all just speculation and assumption on anyone’s part that Jett wasn’t receiving some sort of therapy to address the various physical and mental health issues. I think it’s pretty obvious and well-known that they keep this part of their lives out of the public, so no one really knows the truth.

- ellen on

I know what they are going through as we had to bury our daughter 8 years ago. That was the worst moment in my life. My prayers go out to the family.

I feel their pain so much that I am having a hard time sleeping! I think of my only child- my son and he is only 13 years old! he has chalenging disorders, but nothing like seizures! I only hope that no matter what their religious beliefs that they can move on and remember what a bright light he has put upon their lives while he was here with them all! That he was truly a remarkable gift to them both and Ella and their families and friends and everyone around them! I never knew him, but liked him because he was the best of both John and Kelly! May you be blessed with much peace and rest! We will all miss you Jett! Sincerely, Laura Harris and family

- Laura Harris on

However, Devon is wrong.

Scientologists seek medical care and do take medications. They do not take antipsychotics nor do they believe in mental disorders (that is true). He was taking Depakote for his seizures. They have horrible side effects and Grand Mal seizures are very hard to treat.

- Les on

Ellen,

What does it matter? Why do we have to know what was wrong with their child? Maybe they are private people who do not want their child labeled as their “autistic” child or “developmentally” delayed child. It’s none of anyone’s business what was wrong with this child. They obviously loved him and cared for him.

- Les on

Let me say this- I am a nurse on a psych ward. We do 15 minutes checks on all of our patients due to heavy restraint rules.

We have at 2 patients I can think of who have died within that 15 minute window. Someone checked on these patients and 15 minutes later on the next check- they were dead. One was from a massive heart attack and the other was from, yes, a seizure. That particular patient was on Depakote and phenobarbital.

- Les on

My heartfelt condolences go out to John, Kelly and Ella……Losing a child would be the worst thing to ever have to deal with in your lifetime…having a child myself with a seizure disorder made me realize how very precious life can be and how i hugged her and realized i never want to take her or indeed life for granted…god bless

I was diagnosed with a seizure disorder five years ago, and know how physically and emotionally draining it can be to go through test after test; and run through a list of medications with horrendous side effects that often stop working. So, I understand a little of the strain that the family went through. My heart goes out to John, Kelly, and Ella. I hope that they can eventually find some peace in knowing that Jett is in the arms of God, and his suffering is done. He will forever be in their hearts.

- Mary Bowman on

I lost a son as did the Travoltas. I have to say that it took me years to adjust and it is the most horrible thing that can happen to a person. My son was a great kid too, anyone that came in contact with him could not help but love him, God is the only thing that helped me through that awful time. If not for Him, I don’t think I would have made it. I pray that the Travoltas lean on God and He will provide comfort and a peace that makes this time a somewhat softer trip. The Travoltas are probably one of the most “normal” families in the Hollywood scene and I was always impressed with them because I’m sure that is very hard to accomplish with their careers being what they are. May God bless all of you and may peace touch all of you at this time.
