Denise Richards and Her Towheaded Tots

12/30/2008 at 11:00 AM ET

INF

Looking every bit the movie star, actress Denise Richards took daughters Sam, 4 ½, and Lola Rose, 3 ½, ice skating in Santa Monica on Sunday. The girls all laced up before taking to the ice at an outdoor rink — Sam and Lola were quite the skaters!

Both girls are Denise’s children with ex-husband Charlie Sheen.

Those girls are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cute!!!!

Jo on

is it true that Sams middle name is sheenise?

Lis on

Apparently it is Sam J. and nobody knows why??? Either her middle name is just “J” or obviously starts with a J, although a full middle name has never been given… Kind of odd, huh?

phoebe on

J is the middle name, it’s not an initial for something else. I thought it was a little odd, but kinda cute. I remember reading that they wanted it to be a simple name, so I guess they achieved that!

NELLA on

Cute girls. I’ve heard that Sam’s middle name starts with J I know Denise’s late mother is Joanie I believe so it might be a reference to her mom. Or maybe she doesn’t have a middle name. Anyways adorable girls.

Stacey on

Is it just me or do these girls look extra tall for 3 and 4 years old? I think they will be quite tall when they are older. But both so adorable.

Madison on

Cute

Ashley on

While the Sheen girls are adorable I don’t think they are towheads…They have dirty blonde hair. I thought towheads have whiteish blonde hair?

Jaycee on

My younger cousin’s middle name is just “J.”. It’s in honor of both of his grandfathers, including the one who died the morning he was born. I think it’s a nice way of honoring more than one family member.

her family is adorable! and I love her older daughters boots! My daughter has a similar pair, in pink though! and she loves them.

stephanymarie on

Sam and Lola are just too cute! And they are getting sooo big!

Nikka on

Ashley whose post are you referring to? I dont see anyone mentioning towheads. What does that mean?

Ruthella on

Interesting! Here in the UK, single initial names aren’t allowed to be registered.

Both girls are beautiful :)

I hope Denise have more kids!

Adorable girl. It may be time to break Sam’s thumb sucking habit though. She seems a little old to be doing that.

Jaycee on

Nikka-Ashley is referring to the title of this post, “Denise Richards and her Towheaded Tots.”

Jaycee on

Towhead refers to a very blonde (almost white-haired) child. Here’s a picture of my brother, who was DEFINITELY a towhead, for reference:

I agree with Ashley and Jaycee-a towhead is a child with hair so blonde it’s almost white. Neither child in this case, especially not Sam, fits that description. My cousin’s girls definitely did!

Those boots on Sam are too much. I agree she’s old for the thumb-sucking habit to be still going on, but given all she’s been through in her life, I think she deserves a bit of a break.

My child is almost 11 and continues to suck her thumb, this even after over $800 in orthodontist visits to get her to stop. She is a very well adjusted child. It can be an incredibly hard habit to break!

It bugs me to see this photo of Sam sucking her thumb in public. BY this age, thumbsucking should be stopped altogether. If not, it should at least be done only at home or at naptime/bedtime, or in one’s bed. Before anyone jumps on me and says that “she will stop on her own” or “she won’t be driving her own car and thumbsucking”, let me say that I am a 22 year old thumbsucker.

My parents tried almost everything to get me to stop, but eventually just set rules as to where I should do it. At school, ridicule caused me to stop, but I continued at home. I still suck my thumb to fall asleep at night or when I’m really upset.

I have had over $3000 of dental work, including 4 years of braces to help correct the problems I have caused myself. Unfortunately, after the braces came off I continued to suck my thumb. This has pushed my top teeth out again and my bottom ones in, I need braces all over again. I am still trying to quit, but it is very hard. It is now ingrained and I may never quit. Adult thumbsuckers usually cannot quit once in adulthood, unless psychotherapy or hypnosis is used.

SH on

I agree with other posters…these are not towheaded kids…not even close…
And the thumbsucking…next to impossible for anyone to break until Sam breaks the habit herself….and really, 4 1/2 isn’t that old to be doing this if you’re a thumbsucker.

gargoylegurl on

I sucked my thumb into my teens! My teeth are perfectly straight. This sounds funny, but thumb suckers all “suck” a little differently. =) Some push on the teeth, luckily I didn’t. My habit did not harm my teeth in any way. Perhaps Denise has had this checked for Sam? Either way, she’s still very young, and it’s really none of our business.

emily on

Thanks for sharing that Anonymous. I had no clue there were adult thumbsuckers. Did pediatricians give a reason when you were younger as to how it could have been stopped then? Just curious if my children may need this later on. (right now my daughter is still using a paci to sleep, and my other child is in utero :)

Anonymous on

I agree… someone needs to step in with the thumb sucking. I wish someone had for me… I am 34 and still do it. I HATE it! I am trying so hard to break it now, because my child is starting to understand what I do and I don’t want her to copy me!

pam woodhouse on

I agree with gargoylegurl in that thumbsucking is a personal issue. Though given it is something that quite evidently provides a sense of comfort or security for a small child, I’d be more worried about the damage you might do by insisting it stops.

I feel that children are a lot more intelligent than we give them credit for: they have an innate understanding of what they need long before they can articulate it. So if my little ones feel insecure they know they can always come to me for a cuddle or play with their blanky or suck his thumb…however old they are! After all, a secure child generally grows up to be a happy child.

Gianna on

Sam and Lola are so pretty, and Denise is beautiful too. Can’t wait till her show comes back, love it.

Anonymous on

My parents were told to only allow me to suck my thumb at certain times or in certain places. The thinking is that I would not want to be confined to my bedroom just to suck my thumb, but obviously this did not work for me. BUT it does work for many children. I would much rather see a child with a binky, because that can be taken away. When the binky is taken away, most children do not start up a new oral habit.

It is true that different people suck their thumbs in different ways. I do not actually suck on my thumb, but it is in my mouth and appears that way. This is still pushing my teeth out of whack however.

Terri on

I sucked my thumb until, I think, 5th or 6th grade when I started to wear orthodontics that prevented my from doing so. I think my parents tried everything before that to get me to stop.

sgtmian on

i quit on new years the year i turned fourteen. just stopped cold turkey. i honestly don’t remember if it was hard or not, i think i was just sick of being embarrassed by it. i never needed braces for my teeth, though, they look fine.

Mary on

Lola’s hair used to be a lot lighter than it is now. so maybe she was considered towheaded at one point. but definitely never Sam. her hair’s never been that light. Gabriella Reese’s daughter Reese, now that’s a real towheaded little girl lol!

i guess her thumbsucking isnt so bad at this age. with the family issues going on, im not all that surprised. the problem comes when she cant stop and it becomes an orthodontics issue. right now, she’s probably still got all her baby teeth.

Harvey on

What’s the dig about the thumb sucking? It’s better than smoking, gambling, overeating and a ton of other “adult” habits. It’s legal, convenient, effective, doesn’t interfere with the rights and space of others and, for most, its health effects are none to slight. Maybe more of us should be sucking our thumbs instead! Have a good day. :)
