Melissa Etheridge 'Can't Stand' Time Away From Kids

The life of a performer is something that Melissa Etheridge, 47, has no doubt grown accustomed to during her Grammy Award-winning career as a singer and songwriter. Her tolerance for life on the road has lessened, however, since becoming a mom. “I can’t stand being away from the kids,” she said during a recent appearance on The Bonnie Hunt Show. “10 days…I start going crazy after 10 days.” Noting that “everything changes so fast, especially with 2-year-old [twins Johnnie Rose and Miller Steven],” Melissa says that Christmas provides a much-needed break.
“When it comes to the holidays I like to stay home…[Traveling with the kids] is hard. We’re a big bunch now.”
At the same time, when the twins do accompany her on tour they’re exposed to people and places that have left a lasting impression. Johnnie and Miller developed a fascination with statues at an early age, and even said ‘statue’ as one of their first words. When Melissa was recently in New York City, she and wife Tammy Lynn Etheridge took the twins to Central Park. “We were watching street performers, and one was decorated like the Statute of Liberty,” Melissa explained. “My kids were like, ‘Oh, statue!’ and then the statue moved.” She added,
“Now they go by regular statues and they’re [excited], like, ‘It’s gonna move! It’s gonna move!’”
In addition to Johnnie and Miller, Melissa is mom to Bailey Jean, 11, and Beckett, 10, with ex-partner Julie Cypher.
