Reese Witherspoon on What's Cooler Than an Oscar

12/19/2008 at 09:00 AM ET

Winning the Academy Award in 2005 for her performance in Walk The Line was undoubtedly the highlight of actress Reese Witherspoon‘s career to that point, but her daughter Ava Elizabeth, 9, put the award in perspective like only a child can. The next morning, as Reese explained the significance of the Oscars, Ava interrupted to deliver some big news of her own — the loss of her first tooth the night before. "She’s was like, ‘That’s amazing, but you know what is even cooler?’ I’m going to be the first kid in February [at school] who lost a tooth.’" Reese recalled during a recent appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. "So we were both winners." Fittingly, the 32-year-old actress says that she stores her Oscar alongside Ava and 5-year-old Deacon Reese‘s artwork. "I think it’s so great when the kids hold it and dress it up," she jokes.

Reese made the brief stop in New York City to promote her new film Four Christmas, before flying off to London for more press. While the kids weren’t making the trip abroad with mom this time around, they did visit Paris this summer; Ava and Reese were excited to visit the Musée d’Orsay and the Louvre Museum, but Deacon had more pressing concerns — like visiting the Paris Sewer Museum. "They explain to you, when you flush the toilet, where it goes," Reese says. When work commitments prevented her from accompanying her son, Reese sent Deacon to the museum with her assistant.

"She said it was just awful, she said, ‘Reese it smelled so bad, it was disgusting, be so glad you didn’t go.’ I was like, alright…I went in the other room and said ‘D, how was it?’ and he goes, ‘Totally awesome.’"

Mom Said It

"We weren't trying to have kids. We left it up to fate. I knew there was a possibility, but I was really excited. Even if you are trying, just to see a positive result is shocking!"
