Tennis star Lleyton Hewitt and his wife, actress Bec Cartwright Hewitt, have welcomed a son! Officially making the announcement via their website, the proud parents reveal that baby boy Cruz Hewitt was born Thursday, December 11th. Although keeping any further details surrounding the birth close to the vest, Lleyton, 27, and Bec, 25, share,

"All are doing well and are very excited about the new addition to the family!"

Cruz joins big sister Mia Rebecca, 3. The pregnancy was announced in June, with the couple revealing a January due date. Seems Cruz came a little early!

Great name! I’ve always loved it on Cruz Beckham and Cruz Hewitt flows really well!

I actually love the name Cruz & suggested it to my husband if we have another boy but he won’t buy it. He says it sounds too hespanic for us (we are French). Maybe he will go for William Cruz…lol

It must be quite hard to settle on an unusual name that has already been used by another (very) famous couple, in this case- Cruz Beckham, as I am sure they are aware. But once you have your heart set on a name you are probably prepared to take the comments and comparisons between them and the Beckhams.

Anyway, I love the name and congrats on the new arrival.

Wow this one really surprised me after the Naomi Watts news earlier! Congratulations, love the name and I’m sure he will make it his own!

Ooh, I didn’t even know they were having another baby! Mia is adorable, so I’m sure Cruz is a poppet too! I know the Beckham’s used the name because they were in Spain at the time, but does anyone know if there is a significant reason why the Hewitt’s have used it? PS, I loved Rebecca on Home & Away, she’s stunning, Leyton will have to keep his eye on all the boys lining up for Mia!

I always thought that Cruz was a girl’s name, but maybe I’m wrong…

phoebe on

Sil – I think you’re right, because when Cruz Beckham was born, there were a lot of press stories about it being a female name and one article even went as far as suggesting that the region he was born in actually banned the use of boy’s names for girls and vice versa and they may not be able to register it. I think it’s cuter as a boy’s name though.

Sandra on

Sil, I believe it is. When David and Victoria Beckham had Cruz, lots of people said that it was a silly name, because it is normally used as a girl’s name.
I personally think it is a nice name, but I would never name my own child Cruz.

Philippa on

I believe it’s a classical Spanish girl’s name.
But hey, if people can give girls boy’s names, then why not the other way round.
I actually prefer the name Cruz for a boy.

Sanja on

It makes me think of Cruz Castillo from Santa Barbara, lol.

Ashley on

I like Cruz!

Congrats to the family!

I totally forgot they were expecting again! I kind of like the name Cruz, and I never would have thought it for a girl’s name, but I suppose that’s just because the first time I heard it was for Cruz Beckham.

Thanks phoebe & Sandra.

Cruz, in spanish, means Cross (like the Cross of Jesus) and it’s a feminine word “LA Cruz”. I’m not from Spain (but my language is spanish) but I’ve always heard of Cruz for girls…anyway, maybe pronouncing it with an english accent sounds better for a boy ;)

Suse on

Yes, in Spain it has always been a girls’ name, not very used nowadays, in fact. Maybe peopole is going to start using it again and to boys in Spain now…

Cruz could go either way for me (Now, Brooklyn to me is all girl) — in any case, congrats!

I agree with the post about “big” celebrity names. Always loved Knox but would never use it now…Also can’t imagine too many people using Suri. Of course, might just be me as “Miley” was a huge baby name last year? To each their own…

Cruz is one of my favorite names for boys, regardless of its feminine origin, and I’d love to use it for a son someday. Personally, I think the name sounds quite masculine and wouldn’t think to give it to a girl. It’d be a nice nod to my Spanish/Puerto Rican heritage too.

I remembered hearing Lleyton and Bec announce the pregnancy and wondered if something had happened because we never heard anything after that. Telltale sign I’m reading this site WAY too much!

Kate on

I like the name Cruz, moreso for a boy. Mia is just so adorable, I’m sure her new baby brother is too!

Jae on

in spanish the name cruz is pronounced like ruth with a c, which does sound more like a girls name, but the beckhams pronounce their sons name cruz as in cruise – which sounds much more like a boys name.

i love the boy version and cruz beckham is such a cutie im sure cruz hewitt will be too!

Kim on

Its a big change froim the more conservative ‘Mia’ naming of their little girl, thats for sure! I wasnt expecting it so early as she had said she was due in january so he’s at least 2-3 weeks early! They prob didnt even buy him a xmas present lol I’m not a huge fan of the name Cruz myself but whatever floats your boat, congrats to them both anyways :D

Alison on

Wow, I wonder if I am somehow intune with Bec and Leyton!! One morning I was thinking whether they’d have another baby, and then in the afternoon I read on celeb baby blog that she is pregnant, and then this morning I was thinking that she must be due soon, and then surprise!! They announce she has the baby!!

Martina on

Congratulations to Bec & Lleyton on baby Cruz – what a cool name! I think it fits perfectly with Mia. A nice early Christmas present for the cute big sister. Merry Christmas everyone xox

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
