Hugh Jackman on Adventures With Oscar

ELIOT PRESS/Bauer Griffin

While his dad Hugh Jackman shot the epic film Australia, 8 ½-year-old Oscar Maximillian learned an important lesson in life — be careful what you wish for! During a Friday appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Hugh revealed that prior to the film his son had never expressed an interest in acting. Living in the outback was apparently enough to persuade Oscar to toss his hat in the ring, however. "We shot for eight months, and I gave in after about six months because it was hard for him," Hugh recalled. "He was going to school with the other kids on set, all the aboriginal kids that he was hanging out with and they’re all in the movie, and he couldn’t understand why he wasn’t." The 40-year-old actor reluctantly "relented" and green-lighted Oscar’s appearance in the film, and it worked out in Hugh’s favor!

"There was this one scene he was in, where it took four days to shoot and it was perfect because after four days he came up to me and said, ‘Dad, you have the most boring job in the world. I never want to do it again.’ I was like (pumps fist), ‘Alright, son. Whatever you say.’"

The experience was still a happy one for Oscar and his 3-year-old sister Ava Eliot, however. Together with their dad and mom Deborra-Lee Furness, the family of four ventured into some of the most remote areas of their homeland while making the film. "It was unbelievable," Hugh explains. "I made Oscar do school, he had a teacher, so for an hour and a half he’s like doing nothing and then the rest of the day he and the aboriginal kids would go out, go hunting, and painting, and finding grubs and eating them and having the time of his life."

Hugh, who describes himself as a ‘jock,’ admitted that after welcoming Oscar he mistakenly believed he had inherited "the greatest day pass in my life, for the rest of my life." "I thought, I can now say to the wife, ‘Hey, Oscar really wants to go, he wants to go to the game, he wants to play ball, I know it’s 9 o’clock at night…’" Hugh explained. "[But] he’s never really shown much interest in sports." Undeterred, Hugh took Oscar to a Los Angeles Lakers playoff game earlier this year and thought that courtside seats would be enough to pique his son’s interest. Recalled Hugh,

"It was an unbelievable match. We were sitting next to David Arquette and Sacha Baron Cohen. Three minutes into the first quarter, he says, ‘I wanna go home, this is so boring.’"

Sacha suggested that Hugh find Oscar something to play with and a disposable camera temporarily did the trick as Oscar entertained himself by taking photos of the players and the lights in the arena. Hugh was just getting into the game, when he felt Sacha tap him on the shoulder. "I turn around, and Oscar is taking photos of David Arquette’s crotch," he said with a laugh. "Oscar thought this was brilliant." The situation was about to go from bad to worse, however! Said Hugh,

"And then I had the stupid idea of giving him Skittles…He grabbed the bag, and spilled the bag. Thank God it was a time-out. Literally we’re on the court, picture me and Sacha Baron Cohen [on hands and knees, picking up Skittles from the basketball court]. Sorry Kobe! Sorry mates!"

Australia is in theaters now.

That is to funny. I can just picture them picking up the skittles.

The skittles story with Sascha absolutely made my night. Seriously!

It’s funny how men think their boys will just automatically love sports. When I was growing up with eight brothers, I was the one my Daddy took to baseball games because none of the boys cared!! Loved it.

Hugh just loves his kids. You can tell. Maybe Max will love sports a bit more when he’s older. Maybe!!! Maybe not!!

Welcome to parenthood, Hugh!! I have a 5 year old son and a 3 year old daughter and they never miss an opportunity to make Mommy want to crawl into the cement whenever we’re in public (ha,ha!). It’s funny how kids know just the “right” time to create an embarrassing situation, but you gotta love ‘em, right??? Too bad you didn’t have your camcorder because you could have used the “Skittles” footage to show Oscar when he reaches the age where he’s “too cool” to listen to Mom and Dad anymore!! Have fun!!

- Stephanie on

so, is Oscar the boy in the main little boy in the movie (the one in the previews – I haven’t seen it)?

Both of Jackman’s kids are gorgeous. Oscar will be a heart breaker when he’s older.

- Abbey on

Just a slight correction – that Skittles story happened in 2006! I have the photos saved from when they were on JustJared – I even remember Hugh relating the story on one of the talk shows back then when he was promoting another movie. It doesn’t make it any less funny!

Hugh’s son’s name is Oscar, not Max (Maximillian is his middle name but that’s not what he goes by). Believe it or not Oscar’s cameo in the movie was cut! He said that on one of the talks shows (forget which one, maybe Conan).

- condor on

Oh man i havent laughed that hard in a while!

Hi Abbey, Oscar is not the main boy that acts in Australia, I’m not sure what part he played in the film (he is not listed in the credits in any way). Little Brandon Walters who plays Nullah (who is featured in the ads) though is excellent.

- AJ on

Abbey, Oscar is not the little boy in the movie, that would be Brandon Walters, who is an aboriginal from Australia. Oscar was probably just an extra in the movie. =) Cause I don’t remember seeing him.

And Hugh seems like such a good father. And out of me and my brother, I was probably the one more interested in sports. So dad’s can’t always count on their sons being the ones into sports. Maybe Ava will be more into sports and he can use that excuse with her as the reason XD

- Jeni on

That’s so funny! My father is quite happy to not have sons because he doesn’t care about sports at all and was worried he would have to play football with sons!

Abbey, no he’s not the main boy in the film. I think he just got a small part.

- Sarita on

Too bad Oscar isn’t his real kid. Actually too bad that Hugh doesn’t have any bio kids.

- Alex on

Oh, man! Hugh is just too funny. He tells great stories. Oscar sounds like a fun kid. I can just imagine them picking up Skittles from the floor. Too funny!

- Stephany on

cut or not, I think Hugh made a great decision in agreeing… not only was it a small role, meaning not being overwhelmed with it, but also less of the usual child acting pressures.

On top of that, because it was such a large group to have to shoot with, it would naturally take awhile, so he’d get a good idea of the hastles and boring aspects of his dad’s job… that it’s not just saying some lines and getting awards and money.

I really think that’s an awesome call on his part.

I also like that he was going to school with the kids, so he knew that kids who do all this work acting also still have to do the school work… that it’s not a way to get out of school.

This will keep him very down to earth about how he looks at things and how much work his father and other actors really do and help him not only respect his father, but be grateful for all he does and all the sacrifices he makes.
