Delgo: A Kids' Holiday Film That Doesn't Stink!

The latest crop of family-friendly films for the holiday have left something to be desired, but I’m excited to see Delgo, a new animated fantasy-action-adventure film for kids. At first, when their PR company was diligently pitching the movie, I was a little unimpressed until I heard about its back story. Most animated films nowadays have a few celebrities attached, but Delgo’s entire cast is star-studded. But what is even more impressive is that Delgo isn’t backed by a major studio– it’s an independent which means that the entire production has been a true labor of love for everyone involved.

Coming to theaters on December 12, Delgo’s impressive voice castincludes Freddie Prinze, Jr. as Delgo and Jennifer Love Hewitt as PrincessKyla. The rest of the cast includes Anne Bancroft, Eric Idle, Chris Kattan, Val Kilmer, Lou Gossett Jr., MichaelClarke Duncan, Kelly Ripa, BurtReynolds and Sally Kellerman. It is clear from the behind the scenes interviews with the cast that they too are passionate about the project. It’s a beautiful experience visually- a cross between an extremely high quality video game and a painting, with characters whose appearances are based on the actor who voices them.

The story takes place in the magical land of Jhamora which isdivided between two cultures – the Nohrin, winged masters of the skies, and the Lockni, the terrestrial tribe who harness the mystical powersof the land.  When Delgo, a reckless Lockniteenager, forms a forbidden friendship with the spunky Nohrin PrincessKyla, hostilities between the two peoplesescalate, setting the stage for an exiled empress (Anne Bancroft) toexact her revenge and reclaim her rule. Falsely imprisoned, Delgo and his best friend, Filo (Chris Kattan),must put aside their differences to join forces with a sworn enemy,Bogardus (Val Kilmer), and travel to the mysterious land of Perran torescue Princess Kyla.  Here they encounter fanciful creatures anddiscover more than just a kidnapped princess, they learn the value ofdifferent cultures and the importance of working together.

Fast-paced action and adventure, a mystical land, an unlikely hero,a princess and a message of acceptance between different cultures makeDelgo the perfect family-friendly movie this holiday season. Take your kids this weekend!

I’m sorry but I wouldn’t exactly call the cast impressive…but the story sounds sorta cool I guess.

Funny, my kids have seen the previews for this and have no desire at all to see it. They think it looks dark and not at all fun. However, we’ve seen Bolt twice and both times they’ve laughed until their sides hurt.

I personally don’t like reading reviews where one is made to feel like they’re inferior because they liked a backed by a major studio.
