She may have had general anesthesia, but she could have also had something called a Spinal Block. It’s a lot like an Epidural, but with one major difference…It takes effect almost immeditely (because it is injected directly into the spinal nerves, whereas an Epidural is placed in the fluid around the spine).

Therefore, Spinals are sometimes used for Emergency C-section. They are also used for non-emergency C-sections (my mom, for example, had a scheduled, non-emergency C-section with me, and she had a Spinal). You just don’t hear about it as often as you hear of Epidurals being used.

Her reaction when the nurse told her she needed to get up and go to the bathroom for the first time after her C-Section is EXACTLY how I felt. Ah, the memories…

With emergency c-sections, there is no time for an epidural to kick in. A general anesthetic must be used because it is quicker.

If she didn’t have an epidural for the c-section she must have had a General Anesthetic then….?
