Kate Winslet Gets 'Checked Out' by Other Moms

For all the undeniable benefits of being a celebrity, there are also undeniable drawbacks — like the inability to be viewed as just another mom at school drop-off. So says Kate Winslet, in the cover story for the December issue of Vanity Fair. "You know, these mothers are going to read this article, and they’re all absolutely great, but I know when I walk into that classroom in the morning, even if it’s for a split second, at some point I’m being checked out," the 33-year-old actress explains. "And some of them will even say to me, ‘O.K., what’s the secret with the skin?’"

"At which point I’m like, ‘Oh my God, there’s no secret. I have makeup on. And by the way, since I turned 30, I’ve had an acne problem on my chin. I’m just like everybody else — I just know how to cover it. If you’d like me to show you how, I’d be more than happy.’"

Speaking of happiness, Kate says that it’s the simple things that bring her the most joy, like "going on the occasional picnic" with her kids Mia Honey, 8, and Joe Alfie, 4 ½, or with husband Sam Mendes. "Big family gatherings, and being able to go to the grocery store — if I can get those things in, I’m doing good."

Mia is Kate’s daughter with ex-husband Jim Threapleton; she has been married to Sam since 2003.

I love that she admits to zits!

Not only does she admit to zits, but she’s more than nice to offer how to cover it?! She always has been one of my favorite actresses, but also, one of my favorite people. Down to earth and speaks her mind. I admire her greatly.

I know and respect how private Kate is, but I really wish we saw more of her on here. She is such a great role model and so down to earth.

Look, I love Kate winslet. I think she seems fun, down to earth and beautiful. But having said that I think its possible that she is being a tad oversensitive re the other mums checking her out. Women do often look at women. I often admire another mothers outfit etc at a drop-off…”hmmmm great jeans, I wonder if I could get away with skinny jeans and boots” type thoughts, or “wow, she has great hair”. And lets face it, half the world has spent hours watching Kate Winslet act…so on some subconscious level when she walks in the room others would feel like they know her. I used to work at Harrods in London as a teenager (uni student summer job) and I was constantly wondering where I had met that guy that I was sure I knew in the lift or in my part of the store only to later work out it was Harrison Ford or Michael Caine or Anthony Hopkins. So maybe the other mums look at her because they like her clothes/hair/skin or because they feel on some level that they are close friends even if they brely know each other. Just a thought.

Of course we look at her. She is famous. She is gorgeous on screen, and we want to know if she is just as perfect in person. It kind of makes the rest of us feel good to know that even the “stars” look like regular people when they drop their children off at school!
