Like Rebecca, I am expecting twin girls in January–except mine are identical. I would love to have massages! Especially regularly. Except have 4 other little ones to run after. The best massage I get is playing doctor with them!

I’m totally confused as to how Jerry and Rebecca can possibly know that their girls are fraternal. I thought the only way to tell if same-gender twins are identical or fraternal is to do a DNA test after they’re born!

Some people say you can tell if twins are fraternal because they will have seperate sacks and placentas. However, identicals can also have seperate sacks and placentas!

Can anyone straigten me out here?

Fraternal twins have separate amniotic sacs, while identical twins share a single sac.

1hotmama- Actually, identical twins DON’T always share the same sack. They can be in seperate sacks and have seperate placentas, just like fraternals (I’ve read this in several different places).

In fact, if identical twins DO share a sack, it is usually just the outer sack (the Chorion), and they have seperate inner sacks (the amnions, or amniotic sacks).

These are known as monozygotic chorion, dizygotic amnion or “mo/di” twins (literally meaning one chorionic sack, and two amniotic sacks).

Monozygotic chorion, monozygotic amnion, or “mo/mo” twins are actually very rare, and they also make for the riskiest of twin pregnanices, as the twins can get tangled in each other’s cords. Mo/mo twins are also at higher risk for Twin-to-twin-transfusion sydnrome (TTTTS), due to the fact that they also usually share one placenta.

Anyway, my point is that identicals can sometimes be in seperate sacks and have seperate placentas, just like fraternals. That’s why I’m confused as to how Rebecca and Jerry can possibly know they’re having fraternal twins, since they are a girl/girl pair (if they were a boy/girl pair, they would obviously be fraternal!)!

Anyone on here that has same-sex fraternal twins and found out the twin type during pregnancy?
