Liam McDermott's Helmet Head

Albert Michael/Startraks

Nineteen-month-old Liam Aaron McDermott tries dad’s helmet on for size while out with the family on Sunday in Los Angeles.

In addition to Dean McDermott, mom Tori Spelling and siblings Stella Doreen, 4 months, and Jack Montgomery, 10, were also in attendance.

See a photo of Tori and Stella from the same outing here.

Liam wears Childish Clothing’s Lennon-2 Polo ($32).

I can’t tell you how dangerous it is to put large helmets on small children. Their necks aren’t strong enough to hold them up.

My Dad is a firefighter and they are no longer allowed to put their helmets on children (visiting the station, etc.) because children have broken their necks from the weight of it.

I’m not saying Dean’s a bad father or anything like that, but to all parents old there just please be careful!!

Look at his little face all squished. And his little toes.Too Cute!!!

dean’s not gonna put a strain on his kid, geez.i’m sure, like any parent, if he looks uncomfortable,he’ll take it off.

- ang on

I’m sorry you don’t care, Ang. I hope to God your ignorance doesn’t accidentally make it happen to one of your children.

MY GOD, BACK IN THE DAY WE WERE ALLOW TO RIDE OUR BIKES WITHOUT HELMETS, AND DO ALL SORTS OF THINGS. NOW WERE ARE TOO OVER PROTECTIVE OF OUR CHILDREN. JUST BECAUSE DEAN PUT THE HELMET ON LIAM FOR A FEW SECONDS DOES NOT MEAN HE IS GOING TO BREAK HIS NECK, GIVE ME A BREAK! SAME GOES FOR THE FIRFIGHTERS. THEY STILL DO IT AROUND MY WAY!

- Bela on

natasha is right liams head is not strong enough to hold the heavy helmet up but it seems like dean has a close eye on it

liam is so cute

I agree with Bela. I’m sorry that some kids have been injured or worse, but that’s just the way life is sometimes. We can’t (and shouldn’t) stop doing every single fun thing that might *possibly* have some risk attached to it – because everything does.

Like, I’m sure some child somewhere has choked to death on legos. Should we all stop allowing our children to play with legos? Some kids have been hurt/killed in car accidents; do we need to stop putting our kids in the car? In the news the other day, there was a boy who thought it would be funny to wrap his seat belt around his neck and pretend like he was being choked by it; well he too good a job of wrapping it, struggled to get out, and really did accidentally strangle himself to death.

But we’re not all going to stop making our children wear their seat belts because of tragedies like that, are we?

Bela, just like I said to ang, I’m sorry that you don’t care about the safety of children like I do. Good luck with your children.

- natasha on

Sigh, I completely understand but what I said was “large helmets on small children”. There are helmets that fit children perfectly well and by all means they can and should wear them. It’s adult helmets that are dangerous.

Liam looks so adorable!

I’m not an expert here but I don’t think there is much strain on his neck since the helmet is so big its resting on his shoulders and truth be told, I’ve been kids with much worse things on their heads, like dogs, and plastic containers.

Its just a few seconds of fun for Liam, to make him feel like Daddy for a bit. Its not like Liam spent hours on end with that on his head. It probably didn’t last all that long, most kids his age don’t want anything weighing them down, it was probably off his head seconds later.

The important thing is Dean was watching him closely and Liam looks happy.

- Cassandra on

I think the problem doesn’t exist.Dean is adult,he knows what he’s doing. He didn’t break Liam’s neck If put the helmet for few seconds on Liam.Come on,Natasha!

Liam means “helmet head”

All I’m saying is BE CAREFUL. Jeeze! Please forgive me for letting you know it can be dangerous for your children. I’m just a horrible person for caring.

- Natasha on

Natasha- In all honesty, it DID sound like you were critcizing Dean’s parenting rather than just trying to educate the rest of us on helmet safety.

- CelebBabyLover on

Liam is so cute and tori and dean seem like hands on parents. I heard jack wants to live with them, so they are looking for a bigger home now.

- brooke on

CelebBabyLover, I’m sorry if I gave that impression. I was not trying to criticize Dean.
