Jake Gyllenhaal holds 5-year-old Deacon Reese Phillippe‘s hand while out getting morning coffee and pastries on Friday in Brentwood, Calif.

I know this is life & people do break up but there is nothing that would break my heart more than if my hubby & I would break up & I would see my son’s 2nd mommy walking with him, holding hands. I might be silly or oversensitive since I have never been in this situation, that us how I perceive it.
Though I would be glad that its a nice & caring person like Jake.

I agree with Max’sMom; this picture is bittersweet and represents a lot of modern families…I’d be so sad if I saw my small children with their 2nd mommy but I guess in this situation you just go with it

Hopefully this picture doesn’t represent a broken home as much as it represents a new, extended family. Obviously Reese trusts Jake enough to leave him to care for her children and that’s not a decision a mother makes spur-of-the-moment. And from all the pictures I see Deacon and Ava in – whether they are with Reese, Ryan or Jake – they seem happy and loved.

I’ve seen the rest of the pictures, Jake and the kid look miserable all the time. It looks like another paparazzi photo opportunity to me – and not a good one.

I totally agree with the bittersweet comments. It made me kinda sad to think that Deacon and Ava’s mum and dad aren’t together, but at the same time, it’s sweet to Jake out with one of them. As long as the whole family are happy, that’s the main thing. I wish them all the best.

Deacon is adorable, and Jake is just gorgeous. I like that Deacon and Jake seem to get along great. I would love to see Reese and Jake have a baby together!

Awww, this reminds me of pictures of my (half) brother and my dad when my mom and dad were first dating.
My dad was as enchanted with my brother as he was with my mom–they had special “outings” to the hardware store or to get ice cream–just to bond. I think that’s at least part of what mom saw in him.

Like Brandi said, Reese was definitely there too. She was following a bit behind because she went to put change in the parking meter. Once she caught up to Jake and Deacon, she starts holding Deacon’s hand instead of Jake. The pictures and a video are at Just Jared, if anyone is interested.
It’s nice that Jake is good with Reese’s children, but I hope for the kids’ sake that this is a lasting thing for Reese and Jake, as I imagine it would be very disruptive for the kids now if Reese and Jake were to split up. It must be a confusing situation, since Ava and Deacon already have a very involved, active father and don’t really need another father figure (contrary to the situation for many kids with single moms). Deacon does look rather bemused in some of the pictures!

Reese and Ryan seem to be extremely centered on the welfare of their children and since the divorce, they both have made a consious decision to keep their dating lives private. For either one of them to involve another person into their childrens lives, they must be something special, and from what I can see, Jake’s a good guy.

Come on people, who said Jake is going to be their “new” daddy? How amazing is this that the kid get along with their mommy’s boyfriend, it doesn’t make Ryan any less of a father to them. Can you imagine Reese being happy with a man who doesn’t get along with the kids?
Why can’t you just be happy for them? Im sure Ryan is as any good father would be!

Rather than seeing things half empty, I try to look at these things as I look at my own family: If not for my parents divorce out of a miserable marriage, then I would not have gained two friendly, happy parents, two wonderful step-parents and lots of wonderful brothers and sisters. I know not every situation is this way, but this family seems to be handling the situation in a mature manner and I am happy that Reece has found someone who obviously loves both she and her children. Ryan will always be their father but I hope he is secure enough in his position to be happy the children like Jake if he is going to be part of their lives. It’s never easy, but it is also not guaranteed to be a disaster. There’s a reason “bittersweet” is more tolerable than just plain bitter.

If Reese was dating him and there were never any pics of him interacting with the kids, then it would be “he doesn’t like them” or “he’s shouldn’t b around them!”
As sad as it is, this represents how a lot of families are now – more people than ever get divorced, and more and more often it’s the kids who suffer the most because they’re caught between jealous parents. I think it’s great that Jake is man enough to treat another man’s children well. It’s a sign of maturity from all three parties that they obviously value the kids enough to put them first; can you imagine how miserable they would be if Ryan threw a fit every time they were in Jake’s presence?

Well everyone can relax because Jake (aka Toothy Tile) is not going to be their new dad; he’s not even really dating their mother. He has a boyfriend (Austin), with whom he is on the down low. What this honestly is, is a modern Rock/Phyllis pairing.

If you want an example of a friendly divorced family, just look at Demi, Bruce, Ashton, and their girls. At this point it seems like Ryan is still getting used to Jake’s new role with the kids but they will turn out to be like Bruce and Demi

Wow is it just me or does this picture look like Jake holding hands with Ryan (only a smaller version)? LOL
I miss seeing Ava and Deacon and glad we got to see them ….errr Deacon.
Oh and I went to Justjared.com and didn’t see this picture or any other recent picture of Jake with either of Reese’s children, Ava or Deacon. Does anyone have a link where I can see them?

Reese and Ryan have both made it pretty clear that they are both 100% involved in their childrens’ lives, so I don’t think there needs to be any question of Jake trying to be the “new daddy”. Maybe in a perfect world Ava and Deacon’s parents would be together and happy, but since that isn’t the case, I think it’s nice that Jake is so great with them. He’s just one more person to love those kids and influence them. Obviously I don’t know their family life, but from what I can tell, Deacon and Ava have a lot of love in their life!

Keep in mind that Ryan and his kids have been photographed with his girlfriend, Abbie Cornish. Rumors swirled that he fell for her during Stop/Loss, which was filmed when he was still married to Reese. People should not have an issue seeing the kids with Jake. Both parents have obviously moved on, and I only wish the best for both of them and the children. The sad reality is that most families are becoming blended families. I’m glad Reese has found love again and hope that she and Jake will last.

“Tania- that makes no sense.” Yes, it does. Little kids can’t pretend and not even Hollywood actors can pretend all the time. I’m Jake’s fan and this is one of endless paparazzi photo ops for Jake and Reese. Pure PR, there is nothing to be admired about them.
