Although she’s been sick her entire first trimester, a sweats-clad Brooke Mueller Sheen managed to muster up a smile as she made her way into a medical building in Beverly Hills on Thursday.

Brooke, 31, and husband Charlie Sheen expect twin boys in April. Over the weekend, Charlie told PEOPLE,

"It’s going to be extremely different. I don’t know how to dealwith boys. But I didn’t know how to deal with girls when Ihad them either, so I guess it’s all an education."

oh, i didn’t realize the twins were due in april. that would mean brooke is only 3 months pregnant in that picture. forgive my ignorance, but is it possible to not only identify the gender but also whether one is having twins at only 12 weeks gestation?

Yes, twins can be discovered at 12 weeks but I am quite sure that the gender cannot.

This makes me wonder whether their twin boys were conceived naturally or not… It’s just interesting.

If she is due at the beginning of April she could be 16 or 17 weeks in that photo. You can identify gender by ultrasound sometimes at 13 04 14 weeks- particularly if they are boys. Perhaps they had more invasive testing as well that would identify gender earlier. I agree she does look barely pregnant in this picture.

I am very happy for both of them, such a blessing. But I too am curious about being able to find out the sex so early? I suppose it might be possible through some sort of amniocentisis. Does anyone know anything about that?

You can have CVS done at 9 weeks if you have fertility treatments, that’s what my sister had done. There are rumors Charlie and Brooke may have done IVF with PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis) and that would make sense as well.

I wonder if they had that gender select ivf (where they only insert only 1 gender,boys in this case during invitro)they would definently know they were boys then right?I’ve heard its really expensive for genselect but if you wanted a boy bad enough? Otherwise how could they tell the gender at 3 months?

April may be an adjusted due date since she’s expecting twins. Also, they do more ultrasounds with twins so she may have gotten an ultrasound just at the right time, when it had just become obvious they were boys.

A CVS test would also identify the gender. It’s done between 10 & 12 weeks.

Colby, there is nothing wrong with Sarita’s question. In some cultures an outfit like that may not be considered appropriate. This is an international blog, and the readers come from different cultures and provide different points of view

actually in many European nations it is considered odd to dress down in sweats out in public. i love sweats, of course! but it is a legitimate question.

Colby, Sarita was asking a legitimate question, especially since she doesn’t live in the U.S. When I was abroad in Europe for several months, I never saw a single person go out in public in sweats/pj’s. People always put in an effort to wear real clothes. So, I can see how Sarita would be a little baffled at Brooke’s outfit.

And, of all of the comments I have seen on this site, Sarita’s question was the least controversial. And, it definitely wasn’t inappropriate, especially given the cultural context.

I also see nothing wrong with Sarita’s question. There was no attack – she didn’t say “Is that normal in the US? It looks sooo ugly – I would never wear that!” or something. She was just wondering. I too remember being abroad in Europe and feeling quite confused with the difference in (most, not all) appearances that I noticed between the US and UK. I’m frequently a sweats girl myself, and in NO WAY found the question to be “inappropriate.”

From my own experience, I found out that I was pregnant with twins @ 6 weeks. The only reason that I found out so early is because I had miscarried 9 months earlier & the doctor wanted to make sure everything looked ok so an ultrasound was ordered.

As far as the gender goes – boys are easier to see earlier & I’m sure that there is some type of test that can be done to tell.

I don’t think that Brooke and Charlie did IVF. My husband and I found out the sex of our twins at 13 weeks… It doesn’t really matter anyway. All that matters is that they’re happy and from the way that Brooke is glowing, I think they’re pretty darn happy!

I agree with Colby. I could see that Sarita said that in a condescending manner. Please note she said “normal”, not “common”. It is obviously not abnormal to step out in sweats. Perhaps rare in some countries.

Anna – Wow, last time I checked , Europe was pretty huge… It all depends on what country and/or what culture you’re from. It’s common with sweats here in Sweden. Though it seems as though the “trend” mostly affects fourteen year old girls.

And regarding normal vs common… please, if english is not your native tongue, shit happens sometimes.

* At what stage you can tell the babies sex.

*The possibilty they underwent IVF.

* Cultural differences.

* How small she looks for being due in April.

* Common attire for people in Europe to step out in.

I think Sarita’s question was just her genuinely inquiring. No reason to round up on her.

As for it being common in Europe….well, perhaps in certain parts but not all of them. I’m from Ireland and it was not common in the part I was from. I have lived in France and Spain. Again, not common there. I now live in Belgium and work in The Netherlands. Common there? Nope. It’s skirts/jeans and boots for all the girls here it seems.

mmhhh…where in Europe? I live in Italy and YES is normal to go out dress in sweats, i do! specially now that i’m pregnant…I’ve being in France and Spain also, and there you see lot’s of people dress like Brooke, so i really don’t understand Sarita’s question.

If she is due in april she can be 15, 16 weeks…I’m due in late april and i’m 14 weeks, maybe she is due in early april.

UK girl here, tracksuit bottoms and tops are very normal. In fact, I am about to go out shopping and am wearing a set of Adidas’ finest lol. There was nothing wrong with the original question though, not rude at all. Brooke looks great!

Wow, I honestly meant no harm in my question! I’m from the Netherlands and we don’t go outside in sweats here (at least the people I know), I was just wondering because I have seen it before and thought this might be a good place to ask. I wish it was normal here, seems very comfy!

Hea, I agree. I think it all depends where in Europe you live. I’m from Germany and walking around in sweats is totally not common.

I lived in North America for a couple months and found the attitude to dressing in public really different to what I’m used in Germany. Fo me Sarita’s question is understandable.

A friend of mine is due end of March and about 19 or 20 weeks so if Brooke could be anywhere from 15-19 weeks which is completely early enough to find out about twins and their sex. My sister had u/s every other appointment with her twins to watch growth and everything. She found out one was a boy at 16 weeks and the other around 23 weeks b/c he was stubborn the first time.

Thanks Carie and thanks Hea from Sweden. Poor Sarita and all the others who use English as “a lingua franca” and are not familiar with the fine differences. I actually didn’t notice the difference between “normal” and “common” as Carie has just pointed out. You know why the trend mostly affects girls in their teens (in Europe) – because they copy the outfits of Paris Hilton and others who made the “stepping out in (expensive juicy couture) sweats” sociable. I would not go out like this unless I intended to work out or go for a run. Or probably had to stay in a hospital for a while

Anna, as I am sure you know, Europe is not just one big country. So, obviously trends in your country and Sarita’s are bound to be different. And apparently in the country Sarita is from, it is not common to where sweats in public. Living in London, I never saw people going out in sweats. It just did not really happen. So, I completely get her question.

Gender *can* be determined that early without CVS or amnio. It’s not common for sure (best chance to find 16-20 weeks), but it’s possible if the baby is a boy. If the baby is a girl, doc reading it may not be as sure in case the male organs were just hard to make out. One of my friends found out at 12 weeks from an u/s; her husband is a doctor and he used her for a class to teach medical students on how to do an u/s.

I understand where Sarita’s coming from. I’m from the Dominican Republic, but I’m studying in the US, and back home, it is completely inappropriate to go out in sweats or flip flops, but here, students go to class in PJ’s!! But Brooke does look quite comfy.

sil, I don’t live in Italy, so I might be wrong, but I’ve travelled it quite a few times (Bologna, Tuscany, Rome) and my perception of the women there (especially Brooke’s age and younger) was that they would rather be caught dead than wearing sweats from head to toe, LOL. The same goes for France and Spain. Maybe it’s different with pregnant woman. Or it’s just everybody’s own perception of what we seem appropriate wearing to a doctor’s appointment .

As for what topics this one photo hasn’t covered or not, photos and tidbits of interviews are all we have to keep the comment section alive, so I don’t really see what’s wrong with it.

Lilith, i understand that travelling as a turist is a lot different than living here, i mean is obvious i don’t go to a restaurant or the movies in sweats, but if i take my daughter to the park, or go to the supermarket, or pick her from school….i do wear sweats and so do the other moms, not just the pregnant ones
Anyway, i think it depends what kind of sweats you wear, if they look like pj’s maybe is not that nice, but there are some sweats that can cost like 100 euros and are very nice…Well, is just my opinion

I’m actually quite saddened by the response to Sarita’s question. I have a pretty diverse friend group….A large # of friends from India and Pakistan, and from some pretty small villages in those countries, as well. The attire in this pic would not have been seen in their countries. Now they’re in the U.S., they’re used to it. But it saddens me that people are so narrow-minded that they would #1 nitpick the words normal and common and #2 attack someone from another country asking a legitimate question. Before my friends’ moved here, they would have had the same thought as Sarita….what an unwelcoming forum this sometimes is. That’s all I can say.

I live in Italy. Here well it’s rare to wear sweats and if you do you do it with full makeup! But kids where them to gym class though. But when I lived in NYC it was pretty much all sweats, all the time! LOL
