Gretchen Mol Explains Baby Name Choice

Bauer Griffin

In a Tuesday appearance on The View, Gretchen Mol made light of her decision — together with husband Kip Williams — to name their 12 ½-month-old son Ptolemy John. "My husband is pretentious and so am I," Gretchen joked. In all actuality, the name was one that Kip had been a fan of since childhood when he went to school with a ‘Ptolemy,’ and Gretchen says she "always really liked" the moniker as well. The 35-year-old actress says that even if her son has difficulty with his name while he’s young, he’ll hopefully change his mind as he gets older — as she did.

"Growing up Gretchen was kind of a tough name to have, but I love it now so I think he’ll be okay."

Ptolemy is the first child for Gretchen and Kip, who married in 2004. Her new show Life on Mars premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. on ABC.

Claudius Ptolemaeus (English derivative, Ptolemy) was an ancient Hellenistic mathematician, geographer, astronomer and astrologer. Ptolemy is pronounce TAH-luh-me, not TOE-luh-me.

i am a huge fan of odd names, but this one i do not like…it has a lot against it for a little kid, the spelling, the pronunciation, then the actual name…its just too much.
