Abby in Wonderland: Sesame Street's Favorite Fairy Comes to DVD
|Abby in Wonderland|
There are certain fairy tales that I want to share with my three-year-old that I am afraid she is too young to really "get" and Alice in Wonderland is one of them. So I was thrilled when I heard that Genius Products and Sesame Workshop were releasing a DVD featuring my favorite fairy-in-training, Abby Cadabby and her monster sidekick Elmo based on the children’s classic.
In Abby in Wonderland, Abby, who loves fairy tales and often wishes she could live in one, falls asleep and begins to dream. When Elmo turns into a red rabbit, she follows him down the rabbit hole into an enchanted wonderland. When the rabbit takes her magic wand Abby follows him through this magical land and meets many familiar characters along the way: Rose, a bilingual flower (Rosita), The Counterpillar (The Count), The Cheshire Cookie Cat (Cookie Monster) and Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum (a funny scene that parents will appreciate by Bert and Ernie), the Mad Hatter (Grover) who can also be a Sad Hatter or a Glad Hatter depending on which hat he is wearing and the Mouse (Zoe). Because she can’t use magic to help her find her way back to Sesame Street, she relies on her knowledge of rhyming to defeat the Grouch of Hearts (Oscar the Grouch) and get her wand back.
This was a great story that really caught my three-year-old’s attention. There are a few songs also that are easy to follow along once you’ve seen this a few times. In the interest of writing a fair review I will freely admit that of all the Sesame Street characters I have grown to know and love over the years Abby Cadabby is by far my favorite so this was a very easy sell for me. My daughter, however, prefers Grover and Elmo so the fact that she requests this DVD multiple times a day speaks volumes. She really likes it and, even more important, she is able to retell the story to me which means that I can probably start introducing her to more of my childhood favorites.
At 45 minutes long, this movie is the perfect length for toddlers and preschoolers to enjoy. We definitely give Abby in Wonderland the thumbs up.
Poofing onto DVD September 30th.
