Amanda Mealing Says Son Kept Her Going After Cancer Diagnosis

Ferdaus Shamim/WireImage

Learning in 2002 that she had breast cancer just one day after delivering her son Otis Joe, 6, was devastating for Amanda Mealing. That the diagnosis coincided with Otis’ birth provided the 40-year-old British actress with motivation to make a full recovery, however. "I was in treatment for nine months, from discovery to the end of chemo and radiotherapy, and with a newborn who didn’t sleep," Amanda explains. "But Otis kept me going. I had to get up for a baby who needed caring for."

In addition to Otis, Amanda and her husband Richard Sainsbury are parents to another son, Milo James, 8.

That’s not a movie we have in England so it’s just a coincidence! I love this woman, I just love her character on Holby City. She’s a real tough cookie but we get to see glimpses of her soft side now and again. I couldn’t believe it when her character became a Mum as she’s soooo not maternal but it’s been great and the birth was soooo funny. It’s nice to read things about her as she’s a very private person.

I love her on holby such a great character and in real life she seems so strong, after having a mastectomy after her cancer was found she is an insperation to see there is life after mastectomy’s and breast reconstruction’s from the clothes she wears in holby.
