Lobird: Classic stationery with a twist
I’ve never been much of a paper girl until I started reviewing for CBB, and even since then, it’s not something that particularly excites me. There have been plenty of submissions I’ve opted not to review because the products just seemed, well, like paper. But I can barely contain my excitement for Lobird. Ever since we received a sampling of this San Francisco-based stationer’s jaw-droppingly gorgeous note cards and gift tags, I have been singing Lobird’s praises to anyone who will listen. Classic and edgy all at once, designer and owner’s Laurie Rohrbach vintage-inspired illustrations have me so enthused that I am counting down the months to my birthday, just so I can start putting her artwork to good use.
The note cards I selected are the Lemon Tree with Bird ($38 for 25; shown at right). My name appears in french blue to match the little blue bird perched in the delicate watercolor lemon tree in the card’s upper-left-hand corner. The flat note card measures 4.25 x 5.5-inches, giving me plenty of writing space for a quick thank-you, and comes with a coordinating, color-lined envelope. If lemon trees aren’t your thing, never fear: In the tree category alone, you can choose from pomegranate, tangerine, Italian blue fruit, purple fruit and even trees made of toile.
But that doesn’t even begin to cover Lobird’s collection of stationery for adults. There are genres for birds and bird cages, bags and shoes, the beach, fishing, golf and more. It seems that no matter what your interests, Lobird has designed a card with you in mind. Need proof? We also received note cards for our 4-year-old, Owen. He’s been rocking Converse sneakers ever since he was a
baby, it’s what all our friends and family expect to see him in at any given point in time, so I was thrilled to see that Lobird offered its own take on the classic playground shoe. The Blue Sneaker design ($38 for 25; shown at left) is quite simply the perfect note card for us to write Owen’s thank you notes. It’s boyish and fun but the original watercolor artwork lends an air of sophistication that makes me proud to send them out. And, just as with the adult stationery, there are plenty of styles to choose from — from giraffes flying planes with your child’s name in the banner to a lacrosse stick to even a pink tutu.
Lobird was gracious enough to also provide us with samples of their brand new gift tags ($24 for 12), which can be personalized. Ours greet recipients with ‘Happy Birthday’ and are signed ‘From Owen.’ We received a package which included two airplane designs, two baseball designs (see photo at right) and two soccer designs with coordinating, premium-grade ribbons. They’re so beautifully done, and the ribbon adds such a classy touch, that you really can get by with these gift tags in place of a card.
For that matter Lobird stationery, in and of itself, makes a really great gift; Each pack of note cards comes wrapped with a ribbon and charm that matches up with whatever design you’ve chosen. And with the — literally — dozens and dozens of styles to choose from, you’re virtually guaranteed to find something for everyone.
