Bugalug: Modern hair accessories for your little bug

Bugalug_headband It shouldn’t have been a surprise. Three years ago, everywhere I took my son, someone was always there to tell me what a beautiful little girl I had. Now, when I’m out with my daughter, people are quick to tell me how gorgeous my son is. It figures. While my son came out with a full head of hair, my daughter emerged almost bald. And, I’ll admit, looking a little bit like an old man. And that’s where Bugalug hair accessories are proving to be quite useful.

Bugalug makes some of the most gorgeous barrettes and headbands I’ve ever seen. Trendy and modern, there’s not a single pattern I wouldn’t want to wear myself. Which explains why Bugalug — which is based in Canada and employs work-at-home moms to create their products — is so popular with moms. We can buy accessories for our daughters but test them out a few times before giving them away. Yes, Bugalug barrettes and headbands are designed with moms in mind, too.

Bugalug_headband_2 The headbands ($8) are made from a single piece of ribbon fitted with a toggle that slides up both ends to adjust the size. That means that all of Bugalug’s headbands are one-size-fits-most. And unlike elasticized headbands, this toggle system means the headband is fitted each time to the head it’s on, so there will be no slipping off. Some of Bugalug’s headband designs are even reversible, so it’s like getting two different headbands in one. Bugalug sent me a Ribbon and Blues Flower headband and my daughter and I have been sharing it ever since.

’s barrettes ($4, sold individually) are just as innovative (and sharable!). We tried the Sweet Treats Argyle pattern and loved it. With a unique silicon strip inside each hair clip, they are ideal for all hair types and work incredibly well in fine hair. They don’t call themselves ‘stay-put accessories for the urban girl’ for nothing. They really do stay-put! Would you believe they’ll also survive a trip through the washer and dryer? Because Bugalug barrettes are glueless, they won’t become bumpy or clumpy if they get mixed up in your laundry.

And you and your daughter will be in good company when you’re wearing your Bugalug hair accessories. Bugalug has recently gifted a number of celebrities with their products, including Jon and Kate plus 8, Angelina Jolie, and Oprah. And with 56 barrette patterns and 36 headband patterns, you don’t have to worry about duplicating your favorite celebrity’s style… unless you want to, that is! While I don’t really have a problem with people mistaking my daughter for a boy, sometimes I want to help them (and her) out a little.  So putting the occasional headband or barrette into her wispy little mohawk ought to do the trick. Well, at least until I have to deal with someone asking, ‘Hey, what’s up with that little old man wearing a headband?’
