Naomi Watts Focusing on "The Family Unit"

Naomiandsasha Posing in an advertising campaign for Thierry Mugler’s perfume Angel is just about all the work Naomi Watts can — or wants to — handle right now; she says her focus is firmly on "keeping the family unit together." That family — which includes Liev Schreiber and the couple’s 1-year-old son Alexander ‘Sasha’ Pete — is clearly about to grow by at least one, but in a recent chat with the Times Online Naomi declined the opportunity to confirm the news outright, telling a reporter she "wouldn’t be discussing [a rumored pregnancy] in this interview." Still, the 39-year-old actress couldn’t help but note that "next year is going to be big for me."

While this year may not have been ‘big’ in terms of Naomi’s career, it was nonetheless good for her most important role — that of mom. Of her extended break from acting, Naomi says "it’s been really nice" and "the timing has been perfect."  "I did one movie three months after Sasha was born, and it was very hard," Naomi recalls, "I was breastfeeding him through the day and pumping at night."  When asked if she and Liev will eventually walk down the aisle, Naomi says that while she was originally skeptical of marriage her stance has softened as she’s gotten older.  "I never say never," she says.

Yay she said his name, finally. It has been awhile and I was hoping they were still calling him by his nickname because I really love it…..

It’s interesting that she seems unsure about getting married because they are engaged. Maybe they are happy with just that though.

I wish CBB would use the term ‘partner’ instead of ‘boyfriend’! They have a child together and one more on the way, so surely he qualifies for more than boyfriend status now!

Erica- I actually don’t think they are engaged. There were rumors going around awhile back (very similar to how there were rumors going around, right around the time Harlow was born, that Nicole and Joel were engaged…which turned out to be false), but, if I remember correctly, they turned out to be false. If they actually were engaged, you can bet CBB would be calling Liev Naomi’s “fiance’” rather than her “boyfriend” (and seeing as CBB does everything they can to get correct information, I believe them). :)

zaraB- I agree! CBB usually refers to Brad and Angelina as each other’s partners as well. I think they should do the same with Naomi and Liev.

I just walked past their apt tonight where I had dinner and it looks like they bought the whole floor and the one above, so I’m guessing they plan to stay together for a long time. I used to live near Liev and he just had one apt in the same building, but I guess they have enough money now to get the whole section!

I thought they had married secretly? obviously not!

I thought CBB usually refers to Liev as Naomi’s fiance, which is why I was surprised to see boyfriend now. And Erica, it seems there are several engaged couples who are content to stay that way for now (Poppy Montgomery comes to mind). And I thought Nicole and Joel were engaged and just said they didn’t have any immediate plans to marry b/c they were happy they way they are now too…?

I’m amazed that so many people are so affraid of a lifetime comittment with a guy, but feel confident enough to have a kid by him…which is also a lifetime comittment, be that a good or bad one.

The term “partner” seems to be an attempt to “dress things up”. If you have a boyfriend who you aren’t planning to marry, he remains a boyfriend. If you happen to have a baby by that boyfriend, he is now your baby’s daddy. lol. Let’s not try to make the situation sound a little classier. lol

@ m-dot:

Totally disagree. Maybe CBB should add “discrimination against marital status” to their list of commenting no-no’s. There are many ways to form a family and many ways to be committed that don’t involve sanction by the state or by a religious body.

I would bet that if Jenny McCarthy had to choose between being married to John Asher and being partnered with Jim Carrey (who is an amazing role model and parent to her son Evan), she would choose the latter. These kinds of committed relationships don’t deserve to be held in contempt because they don’t conform to a tradition.

@Greganda:

“Discrimination against marital status?” LOL It’s not that serious.

If you choose to have a child outside of marriage, knock yourself out. Just don’t don’t expect the world to suddenly take your relationship “more seriously” because of it. Having a baby by someone is serious, but does not guarantee the relationship has progressed in some positive new way.

Many were cheering Salma Hayek on as she professed how wonderfully perfect and stable her relationship was with her boyfriend, and how their relationship was some equivalent of marriage, etc. I happen to LOVE LOVE LOVE Salma, but it sent up a flag that perhaps things weren’t so peachy. Then they were engaged. Baby was born. Then it was over. Now she too has a baby’s daddy. Perhaps it’s the term that turns you off, but it is what it is.
