Plain Mary: Baby Play Mats to Drool Over (and On)

PlainmarykensingtonbabyplaymatWhen we heard that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt had placed an order themselves from Plain Mary, we knew we needed to look into this company that we kept hearing about. Turns out Plain Mary is the latest new company making a splash in the celebrity baby world, with celebrities placing orders and receiving gits of the luxurious playmats and embroidered onesies. With good reason- these soft quilted micro-suede machine washable padded mats are super soft and perfect for play, naps, and lounging. Back in April, CBB Writer Jen reviewed their signature Kensington Baby Play Mat, she said that when her daughter Bailey fell on it (she’s still working on the whole sitting up thing), she heard nary a thud. Instead, Bailey ran her hands over the super soft mat with a big grin on her face and literally drooled over it!

Plain mary kensington pillowWe bet Vivienne and Knox are drooling over theirs too! The latest addition to the Jolie-Pitt family will soon be joining other celebrity twins like Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony‘s Max and Emme in logging tummy time on their own mats in chocolate, with pink embroidery for the girls and blue for the boys. Jessica Alba‘s daughter Honor will be napping on her chocolate mat with pink embroidery that family members had sent. Nicole Kidman ordered the Kensington Baby Pillow in white with a pink embroidered "S" for Sunday.

I don’t get all the fuss. Microsuede is polyester! Is someone really paying close to $200 for polyester? Here’s what one website had to say: “What makes microfiber clothes NOT ecofriendly is that the fibers used are polyester and nylon (polyamide), which are made from petroleum; a non-renewable and non-biodegradable resource. (However, the size of the cloths is not that large and, as mentioned, you might only need to buy a few in your lifetime.) Nylon and polyester are made from petrochemicals, whose production creates nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas that’s 310 times more potent than carbon dioxide. And there is evidence to suggest that the production of polyester and nylon can be toxic and hormone-disrupting to textile workers. It is unclear if the fabric used in microfiber clothes would be large enough to have toxic effects on the end user.” So, what about those tiny babies inhaling whatever contaminants that are in the material?
