Backing over my child is seriously my biggest fear! I am a freak about it and check obsessively, but I always worry whenever I leave her with her grandparents, or any babysitter for that matter. You always hear stories about family members backing over kids and I can not imagine the guilt for the person who does it!

Last week, I had to give my son the Heimlich (sp?) maneuver because he was talking while his mouth was full. Before I had a chance to remind him not to do so, he was hacking, then his face went blood red and he stopped coughing.

We were in a public restaurant and people looked on and no one got up or anything as I pulled him from his chair and flipped him around and quickly did the procedure that I’d learned and relearned in Girl Scouts, babysitting class, and then general first aid that I took in prep to becoming a parent (along with cpr/infant cpr).

One good hard thrust got it out of him, and I heard one man at the table behind me point out to his friend that I did that fast and he speculated that my son must choke a lot.

In truth, it was the very first time, on anyone, that I’ve ever had to perform this lifesaving maneuver. But… it’s so easy for little ones to choke. In the past, the only time I’ve had to help someone who was choking was when one of my dog’s puppies choked… and you treat them differently. I had to act as though it were an infant and also keep the size in mind.

My mother always said I saved its life, since she hadn’t noticed it or known what to do if she had.

The point is… anyone’s child can choke and you might be the only person who moves to do anything… make sure you know how to do it.
