Minnie Driver's Doc Slips on Baby's Sex

On Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night to promote her new movie Take, due in theaters July 18, actress Minnie Driver revealed that her obstetrician accidentally referred to her baby by sex at her last prenatal appointment.

Apparently [the doctor] let it slip, the sex of the baby, and both my friends — my friend and his 7-year-old son — were standing there.

The doctor said "he or she" — Minnie didn’t hear which because she was focusing on the doctor’s previous comment — is "fantastic-looking with long legs."

Minnie, 38, claims her friend’s son is jokingly blackmailing her now, promising to stay mum on the baby’s gender if she does as he asks. "He said to me, ‘You know what, Minnie?’ And I said ‘What?’ And he said, ‘I own you. If you don’t want to know the sex, you’re going to have to buy me a lot of stuff.’"

The the actress — who told Jimmy Kimmel she is "maybe" six or seven weeks away from giving birth — is due with her delivery surprise in late August.

Hmm makes you wonder how close she and her friend are. I don’t know many men that would go to a doctor visit with someone that’s just a friend AND bring along their son.

she doesn’t remember if the doctor said he or she? I didn’t want to know the sex of my baby,but my son made it pretty obvious he was a boy and the doctor let it slip and you better believe I remember what she said. regardless of how excited you are,I don’t understand how you could remember that the doctor said the sex,but you can’t remember what they said

It is a girl. Somehow I don’t see a doctor describing a boy as “fantastic-looking with long legs.”

I watched the show. She actually said she had two friends with her, (one a male, one a female), but that it was just the guy friend who was teasing her a lot, who she told the story about.

That is a really weird comment the doctor made. I would find that comment and the doctor creepy, and quickly find another doctor. If the baby is a girl, he is describing a baby as looking fantastic with long legs?? Huh?

Good thing she doesn’t remember! I would be livid if my doctor let it slip! I have another appt. tomorrow and am going to make it clear then and every other visit that I don’t want to know the gender.

She probably is having a girl, she’s hinted at this several times despite insisting that she has no idea!!! But i was told the same thing when i was pregnant four years ago…’good looking, long legs, nice height (i have height in my family)’ I was sure all of that meant i was having a girl but it was a beautiful healthy boy and he was all of those things and more so i guess you can never really tell!!!

At our 36 week (?) appointment my OB said, “So do you have a name for her yet?” And then quickly said, “Or him, since you don’t know what you’re having.” I went home that night and was like, “Am I having a girl?” But I dismissed it because I was SO convinced I was having a boy!!

When it turned out I DID have a girl, I instantly thought of her comment.

I’m sure the doctor didn’t mean to imply the baby looked fantasic with long legs as in it looked fantastic because of long legs. I’m guessing it was two different put together, as in the baby looks fantastic, as in development, AND has long legs. They said something simliar about my son when I was pregnant. I think the 7 year old picking on her is too funny.

My doctor did that too. We made it all the way to our 38 week check up. It was Monday and she told us she wanted to schedule an induction for Wednesday. She then said, “Ok, so will you be circumcising (stopped and looked at her notes in my chart)…um if it’s a boy.” Yup, 2 days later we had a boy.

I wanted a birth surprize. I ended up needing a lot of ultrasounds towards the end of my pregnancy due to a breech baby. My midwife was feeling my belly one appt and mentioned “he” so I thought maybe they put the gender on one of the u/s reports and she slipped up. After I said “he?” she quickly replied that she will sometimes just spout out a gender when talking about unborn babies. This turned out true since I gave birth to a baby girl. I felt it was a girl all along as well.

I never found out what I was having (though I wanted to–but dr never saw a need to do an ultrasound unless there was a problem). But when my water broke and I went to the hospital, the dr in the triage (my dr hadn’t arrived yet) did the ultrasound to check that the baby was in the right position, and said “yup, looks good. he’s facing the right way, so we’ll go ahead with the induction.” My mom turned to him and said, “oh, so it’s a boy?” The dr stutttered and said , “umm, well, he or she. whatever it is.”

I did have a boy, 15 hours later.

I think that by ‘fantastic looking’ the doctor simply meant the baby looks good, healthy, etc. I don’t think he meant anything creepy by it!

Here in the UK, I don’t think the sonographers even look for the gender unless you ask them to (or unless there’s a specific medical reason, of course).

With each of my four pregnancies I have asked the sex, after all of the ‘anomoly’ checks had been carried out, and every time the sonographer had to go back and look again to tell us.

We don’t usually see a Dr over here unless there’s a medical reason, so maybe that’s why? Scanning clinics are always so busy and almost always runing late, so I don’t think they have time to look for anything unnecessary!

I think a girl for Minnie, but I don’t believe she didn’t hear the ‘slip’. Also, maybe her Dr just refers to all babies as ‘he’ or ‘she’, to avoid using ‘it’?

My most wonderful OB/GYn would call both my babies “she” when I was pregnant…but I knew I was having boys before i delivered. I don’t think a comment like that means much.

And I don’t think a comment about fantastic looking legs is creepy at all. I think it is kind of funny and cute.
