Joel McHale has his hands full with oldest son Eddie

07/16/2008 at 07:00 PM ET

Joelmchale_j_b_gr_cbbSometimes, children express themselves in "creative" ways that adults, well, don’t quite understand. E! Network funnyman and The Soup host Joel McHale is running into that dilemma with his oldest son, Edward "Eddie" Roy, 3 ½.

Joel said on last night’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien that Eddie "lies on top of" his 4-month-old brother Isaac Hayden when he is sleeping, yelling "’I want to see his eyes,’" then prying his baby brother’s eyes open.

Eddie has also taken a step backwards with his potty training since Isaac’s birth, Joel, 36, joked to Conan. Instead of using the toilet, Eddie yells "I’m a dog!" and then "runs into the garden and poops." Laughed Joel, "If we go out in to public, do I have to bring a plastic bag?"

However, little Eddie appears to be inheriting his funny-bone from his dad. Joel recently appeared on the Today Show, and his wife Sarah watched with Eddie from the family’s California home. When Sarah asked Eddie "Who’s that?," he looked at the television and replied "That guy’s going to take me to the park on Thursday." Says Joel, "My nickname is ‘that guy,’ which makes me look like the worst father in the world."

Awww, that whole clip made me happy. I love him and it’s awesome to hear about his boys. I hope that regression turns itself around soon.

please tell me he jokin about his older son lying on top of his little brother and yellin and pryin his eyes open when he’s sleeping. what parent would let a child do that? I’d be afraid he’d hurt the baby

Jess on

I’m sure they don’t let him, but I can totally see a kid wanting to do that. He was hysterical last night. I never realized how tall he was!

Joel is hilarious! Love The Soup!

Jillyen, Joel and his wife wouldn’t let their older son do anything that was going to hurt the baby. I’m sure Eddie is just getting used to having a sibling around.

My mom’s now six year old daughter would do that to her now three year old sister when she was born. Not the prying open of eyes, but she got extremely jealous and you’d have to watch her like a hawk because she’d always throw toys and other objects at her or would hit her on the head, etc.

My niece has taken to calling my mum, her nana, ‘her’ instead of actually calling her nana. It’s just a phase kids go through, but it was funny the way Joel talked about being ‘that guy’!

“that guy”, lol. makes me feel a bit better about my 3 1/2 year old daughters new thing which is to say “i need a lady to come cuddle me” when she is upset & wants to be given a hug..’a lady’ being me.

I doubt he actually lets Eddie lay on top of his brother… Joel has an intense sense of humor, so that’s probably what it was.

I LOVE him though. He’s great.

Haha, I love, love, love Joel!

My cousin went through that phase but he just called his mom and dad by their names. Luckily, he grew out of that! TOO CUTE!

Mom Said It

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
