Angels pitcher Joe Saunders, wife expecting a baby at any time

07/09/2008 at 10:00 AM ET

His first baby was due Monday, but pitcher Joe Saunders took the mound Tuesday night with one thing on his mind — securing a win for his team, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  The 27-year-old tells the Los Angeles Times that he’s able to "block … out" whatever anxiety he’s feeling about the birth of his baby girl, whom he and wife Shanel plan to name Mattea. "When I’m out there, the only thing that matters is baseball," Joe said.

Shanel will undergo an induction if Mattea hasn’t made her entrance by today, however, for Joe has been tapped to appear in his first ever All Star game, to be held next week at Yankee Stadium. The prospect of inducing is not sitting well with Shanel, who "doesn’t want to use any drugs or anything like that," Joe revealed.  "If we have to induce we’ll induce. But she’s going to wait until the last possible second," he added.

Mom Said It

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
