Grandpa Kidman explains inspiration for Sunday Rose

As many readers had suggested, the moniker Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have chosen for their new daughter, Sunday Rose, does indeed have great meaning behind it, Nicole’s father Antony has revealed. The first name, which Antony and his wife Janelle suggested, refers to Sunday Reed, the muse of Australian artist Sidney Nolan. Antony explained that she was a "prominent patron of the arts in Victoria."

The name Sunday struck me as being a nice name for a woman, so my wife and I mentioned it. It was among other names being mentioned but they decided that was the name they wanted.

As for the middle name, Rose, Keith’s brother Shane confirmed that it was chosen in honor of their late grandmother, who passed away in 2004. He spoke to an Australian radio station about the birth, saying,

It’s a wonderful wonderful thing, I’m so, so proud.

Nicole’s mother Janelle and sister Antonia Kidman are currently in Nashville, TN, visiting the newest member of the family, while Antony is back in Australia, caring for the other grandchildren.

I wasn’t sure how I felt about this name for a few hours yesterday but, I actually quite like it. It’s not something I’d choose but, it ranks up there with those happy sounding names in my opinion :) Either way, I’m thrilled for the lot of them!

Lovely, just lovely.

I forgot to post this in the other Sunday Rose posts, I like how Keith and Nicole always thank the public for their thoughts and prayers. They did the same thing after their wedding 2 years ago.

A name that Granpa suggested and a name to honour great-grandma, the baby cannot go wrong.

I am so glad that little Sunday’s name origin was explained. I was getting tired and fed up hearing that it was chosen to emulate Suri’s (Red Rose) name. I think Sunday Rose is a precious name and I am sure she is a gorgeous precious baby.

I am looking forward to seeing pics of Sunday!

I actually really like the name Sunday. I think it is very pretty, and delicate. Definitely fitting for a child of Nicole’s. It would not surprise me if we see a jump in popularity for this name thanks to them bringing back into the spotlight.

I dont care where the name came from, but i really like it. Nice choice !!! It shows how they already love the baby so much to give it such a poetic name

Oh it was so nice of him to share! I love hearing the meanings behind names. We have already have middle names picked out for our baby (1 for a boy and 1 for a girl since we don’t know what we’re having) and although they are a little unusual, they have deep meanings for us. :-)

I still can’t believe she was pregnant in the first place. The biggest she got was how big I was when I was entering my seventh month! Congrats to her, though.

Honestly, I like the name, but then, who really counts are the people that chose it :o )

But today I read in some German newspaper that one woman actually said sth along the lines of “what a stupid name, it sounds lie “Sunday Roast”…” … oh my !

That reminds me of the day I got home with my darling firstborn, being proud that I had managed to find a name no-one would be able to tease him about (Jakob) and as soon as we opened the entrance door, our neighbour’s kids greeted us by singing “Bruder Jakob”.. a wellknown children’s song… I had totally forgotten about it…. my poor son lol

Always kewl when they explain the meanings behind the names. I for one absolutly love the name.

That makes a lot of sense that Keith and Nicole would name their baby after a prominent patron of the arts. It is also very nice that Anthony chose to share this with us!

I love it. Me and my mom always thought Sunday would make a nice name for a girl. I actually knew a woman named Sunday too.

I think that naming your baby after people is a precious and thoughtful idea. My baby, who is due in October, will be named after two very special people in my family. Although the name is unique it has a lot of special meaning behind it for my husband and I.

Congrats to them, can’t wait to see pictures of Sunday!

Hmmm, I am chuffed that in a oomment I posted here yesterday, I predicted that the name would have stemmed from Sunday Reed!

Southlyn on

I really like the name but I really like Nicole and felt that whatever name she picked, it would be picked with love and respect for her baby.

The best part of this story, for me, is that little Sunday will be loved on Sunday, on Monday, on Tuesday, on Wednesay and all week long… every week and every year. It is so wonderful when a child is wanted as much as this one is.

I’m so happy for Nicole.
