I would like to know what the laws in California are about wearing helmets on motorized bikes. It is illegal in my province to ride a scooter without a motorcycle helmet. Bike helmets don’t count here, and that little bike helmet Jamison is wearing would be cause to get a hefty ticket from the police not to mention Jim would be charged with endangering his child in addition to not wearinga a helmet. Maybe the picture was taken on a studio lot where there’s no traffic, then I guess I could understand the lack of proper head protection, but if they’re anywhere on a street they should both be wearing motorcycle helmets even if it is not the law in California. It is just common safety.

Thanks for echoing my exact thoughts :) no to mention no leg/foot protection for his daughter.

Yep, the bicycle helmet is ok for scooters per California Vehicle code 21235 (c).

She’s a cute little girl. I’d love to have a little scooter like that to tool around on. I wouldn’t wear a helmet either. I have a hard time seeing with them on.

my first reaction is why isn’t she sitting in front, she looks like she’s about to fall off. Maybe he is going real slow.

In California I believe Jim Belushi’s daughter is required to wear a regular motorcycle helmet because what they are riding on is considered a motorized scooter, whereas if she was riding a stand-up scooter (powered by your feet or one of those small lawn mower motors) then she is only required to wear a bicycle helmet.

With gas prices the way they are in California, this made me interested in looking into Vehicle Code 21235. It does state that a bicycle helmet is required, but it is required for Jim.

Another point noted is that it says you are “not allowed” to have passengers or packages on a motorized scooter. The passenger part wouldn’t bother me too much, but if you can’t have packages on it, you couldn’t even take it too the grocery store and what is the point of the package rack on the back!!! Maybe the CHP over looks the packages???

Just thought I would point it out in case other people were interested in beating the gas prices with a scooter. You can see the entire code at the DMV website!!!

Jim and Jamison sure do look like they are enjoying some Daddy daughter time though!

Sorry, I just reread the code and the packages part just states that you can’t hold one in your hands!!! That makes more sense, but still “no passengers”…

My Dads family all lives in the Netherlands and we scooted all over town on the back of my cousins scooter (with a helmet), I guess the laws are different there. It sure was fun though!!!

Here in Cambodia, they’d have 3 adults and 2 kids on that thing, and no one would wear helmets. It’s frightening.

I don’t think it’s a big deal regardless what the law technically states. I doubt he’s taking his daughter down the highway….Please, it looks like they are “scooting” around their neighborhood. I don’t see any immediate danger. I think it’s nice he spends time with his daughter I’m sure she will be just fine.
