well, As I stated above I lost weught during eveyr pregnancy, as much as 27 pounds. I had perfectly healthy children. ALOT of the times obese mothers do NOT gain weight while pregnant or even lose.

We have 2 sections in our pantry as well...
Who says the kids side is filled with "special kid's food that's highly processed and comes in fun boxes with colorful characters on them"?

We have a whole shelf of HEALTHY foods just for the kids that they can raid if they want a snack. My side has priceier things that I don't want them touching!

Our new thing is that each kid has a shoebox size container with their name on it. Everyday in the am I put their breakfast, 2 snacks, and lunch in it. If they are hungrey they have to eat from their box, when its gone its gone....It has worked wonderfully well, even teaching my oldest that if you eat everything by noon your gonna be hongrey later and have a belly ache...

I admire Carnie because she is very much like MANY overweight people out there.

I am surprised that not one of the comments yet mentions the fact that she "...said it's important to her that Lola does not hear the term 'diet.' Instead, she said she's talked with her daughter about making healthy food choices and how it helps to lead an overall healthier life". Which is wonderful, but then the post says... "To that end, Carnie revealed there are two "sections" of her pantry -- one for Lola, and one for her".
Holy hypocrisy! Really? The majority of the people I know were raised like that and that's why the majority of people today have weight and food issues. The concept of children needing special "kid's food" that's highly processed and comes in fun boxes with colorful characters on them, is a completely modern and totally detrimental concept for our children's health and ultimately to society as a whole. And that doesn't sound like an enjoyable way to live.
I look forward to taking my future children to the farmer's market, tasting the first snap peas and lettuce and peaches and strawberries of the season. I can't wait to have them at my feet in the kitchen as I cook, tasting from the same spoon, eating from the same plate. What greater joy is there in life than sharing the joy of real health affirming, life giving food with your family?

I don't understand the fear of saying the word "diet". It is just a word, the attitude a person has with regards to eating will make a far bigger impression on a child than a certain word.

Actually, M, there is a diff. amount of healthy weight gain for the obese. I was reading in What to Expect When You're Expecting, and they say that for the obese, 10-15 pounds is all that is recommended (if that I think...case by case basis depending on how much the person weighs). Being too heavy can cause problems for the baby, including premature birth.

Tink, while I apologize for singling you out, that was not my point-what I wrote about in my previous post is an undeniable problem when it comes to readers of this site. The fact that this site is moderated at all puts it bars above the rest in terms of the quality of comments allowed. That is why I have such a problem with how frequently several readers complain about the opinions of those with whom they disagree. I don't have to tell anyone that the world is not all sunshine and rainbows, and while there is far too much negativity on the Web and in general, censorship of valid opposing opinions on the grounds that they are "judgmental" is beyond juvenile-it is dangerous.

At any rate, Ayla, I think Carnie eating off her daughter's plate goes back to her use of food as a source of comfort, and she probably feels compelled to eat it if it is in front of her. She does seem very self-aware, which is a good thing. I just hope she can realistically achieve her goals as a parent and a woman trying to lose weight. At 40, she's working with borrowed time if she wants to lose a significant amount of weight before getting pregnant.

"I think this is God’s way of having me eat this way so when I do get pregnant, then I won’t be gaining weight and even if I did gain ten pounds, that weight’s going to come off plus more and I’ll be so healthy during this pregnancy and that’s going to be great"

that is the quote that does not really make any sense to me..'then i won't be gaining any weight' and 'even if i did gain 10 pounds'..?? there is a normal weight gain during pregnancy from amniotic fluid, the placenta, the baby, the growing uterus..alone. so i would be more concerned if she did NOT gain *at least 10 pounds* or so. yikes!!

A good family friend of ours had the gastric bypass surgery. He lost a lot of weight and got healthy again, but the mental part of the food addiction is still there. There really is no cure for that. He has gained a little weight back, but overall I can honestly say I think that surgery saved his life.

Having a food addiction is a very complicated thing. A lot of the time the eating is helping to fulfill the hole of some sort of emotional problem and unless you treat that problem you will go in circles trying to lose weight. I have a weight problem and I know that my eating is triggered by emotional cues. It sounds to me that Carnie is stuck on that cycle. It can be so beneficial to find out why you are wanting to eat and then go from there, and not just rely soley on dieting. I commend Carnie for coming this far and for the healthy attitude she has towards raising her daughter. I hope that the pieces will all fall into place someday for Carnie. Sorry for me getting up on my soapbox! :)

Anyway, I remember an interview Carne did once where she said that even after her surgery she still ate full bags of candy each day. She would just make the bag last all day since her stomach space was smaller. She knew that it was a problem and was working on it.

I wish her the best with her weight loss. I know how hard it is to lose those pounds, both physically and mentally. :/

I guess I just do not understand eating off of anyone elses plate, be it my child or spouse. When my boys were little I gave them baby sized portions and they did not have leftovers on their plates. Plus, lol, being the oldest of 7, I guess there were never any leftovers on anyone's plate.

My lovely dil who is morbidly obese had the bypass surgery. Only lost 75 lbs. and was back to her starbucks and dunkin donut runs within a year. I guess she is always destined to be big and beautiful.

I do wish Carney the best. I like her as a person and hope she will keep on track.

Someone please explain to me eating leftovers off of a childs plate.
