Enter_your_url_4We’ve received a few reports of readers who have been spammed by unscrupulous people who harvested their emails when the reader posted a comment on CBB. Currently, on the site — as with most Typepad sites — when you post a comment, your email address can be viewed when someone mouses over or clicks your name.

If you do not want your email address to be accessible on the site, please enter a URL in the URL box. (See example to the right.) This will make it so that when someone clicks on or mouses over your name, the URL will show instead of your email address. (A URL is a website address like http://www.celebrity-babies.com.) If you have a MySpace, Facebook page, or blog that you’d like to share, this is a great place for it. Otherwise, enter any URL. I advise that you click Remember personal info too so you never have to enter the info on CBB again. You can test it out on this post.

Similarly, you can also create a free TypeKey account (which works on most Typepad blogs). When someone mouses over or clicks your name, they will be taken to your TypeKey profile page which only displays the information you choose to display.

I normally just use a dummy email address. Call me strange but I really don’t care or want to have people read my blog or myspace so listing them is the last thing I want to do.

I’ll try my blog for a bit but have had trouble with it public a few years ago…

Thanks for explaining this. I was contacted a few days ago by the person with the autism products. I ignored the email after skimming over it and figuring out it was a sales pitch. I had no idea you could click on the name of the person and it gives you their email. Sure enough it did when I tried it. THX for clearing this up!

I received one of these emails from someone who was unfamiliar as to what constitutes spam. I really believe she didn’t understand that she was doing anything wrong. She wasn’t selling anything just trying to get some people to read her blog. I did write her back and explained that what she did wasn’t the best idea and that folks at Celebrity Baby Blog would probably be upset over it. I know there are alot of unsavory people on the net trying to sell you junk or trying to rip you off; however, I don’t think this person who wrote me was doing that. I think she will be more careful in the future!

I also got an email from someone touting her own celebrity baby blog. I didn’t think anything of it and just deleted it. Something I do with most unwanted email….

I haven’t got any spam, but I can tell you an example how leaving your website URL with your website store works. I keep a track with google analytics and I found out that one of the readers who clicked on my website even placed an order! From the analytics I found out that many peole are clicking on the information you enter, so I’m sure I would be getting lots of spam if I would provide my email addy directly

i got one from someone who openly told me, when asked, that they go through the internet looking for comments (good and bad) that people make about their company. and try to get them to come back. and i had written that i had found an unasked for conversation with the site owner creepy and would never shop there – and it was him that wrote me, too!! and he DID say he would not write again because i asked him not to, but *wow* O_O
