Update: Clay Aiken to be a father

ClayaikenUpdate June 3rd: TMZ is reporting that they are expecting a baby boy.

Update May 29th: A rep for David Foster has confirmed exclusively to People that "the story is true."  He added,

It is true Clay is the father. She was artificially inseminated by Clay. She’s due in August.

Rumor originally posted 2 p.m.: TMZ is reporting this afternoon that Clay Aiken, the 29-year-old former American Idol runner-up, is going to be a father.  Clay’s producer and best friend Jaymes Foster — with whom he occasionally lives — is reportedly pregnant with his child via artificial insemination.  Jaymes is the sister of famed music producer and composer David Foster, is said to be 50, and due in August.

If true, the baby will be the first for them both.

Umm..Come again?

- Destiny on

wow! Thats all I can say! I like Clay. I thought he should have won instead of Rueben and my grandmother adores Clay. I think he would make a great dad actually! Guess we’ll see if this is true soon enough!!

- tink1217 on

um, ok…

- kaitlyn on

TMZ says that she is 50. They also say (which may be worth noting in the post) that Clay does intend to take “an active role in raising the child.” I am curious if this rumor is true. TMZ seems to get it right most of the time, don’t they?

- MB on

This is a very intriguing rumor … can’t wait to hear more.

- carla at somethingaboutbaby.com on

Unusual, and interesting!

- Diane on

WHAAAAAT?

- Kerry Ann on

Wha??

If he lives with her, why would she choose AI? Haha, I guess that acronym has two meanings for Clay now…

- rachael on

i thought clay was gay…….*thoroughly confused*

- ang on

Wait…If she’s in her late 40s, it’s very unlikely she could get pregnant through artificial insemination. Most women that age use egg donors, thus need IVF.

- kate on

she is 50??? She must have really GOOD eggs!!

- tink1217 on

Shocker much?

Every other site is reporting it also…I believe it’s true. Is there a reason for the IVF treatment? I know it’s an ubber personal question but alot of people assume it was IVF because of Clays preferences…

Congrats to them!

- Ericka on

Seriously, I do not know what to say other than …Congrats!?!

- Courtney on

I doubt this is true.

- Jackie on

LOL

- sigh on

It’s time for the Claymates to face facts. He’s gay girls. I wonder how his mama is handling this today?

- jill on

TMZ is a tabloid – people amaze me at what they will believe. How do you suppose TMZ would have gotten hold of this news? Dr just decided to blab? Jaymes & Clay invited TMZ for coffee and gave them the scoop?

It’s a rumor, you morons.

- Cat on

I, too, thought Clay was gay…but maybe he wants a biological child. But a 50-year-old undergoing artificial insemination seems a bit off, unless they actually mean there was a donor egg used and it was implanted and Jaymes (that name REALLY threw me off, lol) will be a surrogate, so to speak. Or am I just thoroughly confused? *scratches head*

- Melly on

Um…what?

- jasmine on

This is confirmed on people.com.

- Sasha on

uhhhhhhhh…are they dating or is he a gay friend who donated his swimmers? im so confused.

- liz on

This has to be the oddest pregnancy announcement ever.

- JR on

Wow…weird….wonder if this confirms the rumors about him being gay, since it was not done the old fashioned way, you know, having sex. ;)

- Becky on

At first I was speechless and like Kaitlyn…lol “Um ok” pretty much sums it up.
Congrats to them both….I think..

- Natalie S. on

LOL Rachael! AI indeed!!! I think it’s cool and more power to them.

- Sasha on

This is definitely a unique announcement, but to me it does not matter how and why a child comes into the world, as long as they have parents who love them.
Regardless of why Clay and Jaymes chose to have a child together, they should be congratulated because clearly they intend to love this child very deeply.

- Sabrina on

Hmmm…really? And due in August? How did they keep it a secret for this long?

- Mimi on

What does his sexuality have to do with him having a baby? How do any of you know if he is gay or straight and honestly it does not matter. Why is it weird? If it was someone else
such remarks would not be written.

- ggg on

additional (and detailed) statement needed, please! I’m surprised they didn’t explain more, instead leaving people to speculate.

- La Petite Belle on

I read it was artificial insemination, not IVF. Which means he donated sperm and its her own egg. That is surprising since she is 50!

- tink1217 on

ahhhh…ok.

- UggaMugga.com on

Wow, I wasn’t even going to comment because I didn’t believe for a second that any of this was true…wow. It is quite the story and way for a baby to come into the world but obviously it was planned :) I wish them all the best and hope that this baby will have a great upbringing. CBB please keep us updated, because I am still VERY confused on this situation!

- Shelby on

This is kind of weird. I mean, are they a couple or is he just being a good friend and donating his sperm for her to have a baby?

- Aura on

I think this definitely gives creedence to the “Clay is gay” rumors.

I’m happy for both parties.

I also read that Willie Garson is adopting a child.

- Chrystie Delancey on

Jaymes Foster doesn’t look like she’s in her 50′s…more like her early 40′s. She looks quite young and healthy. Ruid.com has a photo of her and Clay….with another woman. She’s the brunette

http://www.ruid.com/image/29242/400/su_jaymes_clay.jpg

- Ericka on

Wow. Just…wow. Congratulations.

- terri on

*shurg* it’s not weird to me. good for them… in terms of her age, most women in my family, for example, didn’t even START menopause until their mid-50s. a little odd, but it does happen.

- dee on

wow. (but well said Sabrina)

- brannon on

I think it is probably that he is gay and decided that it would be a way for him to get to experience fatherhood. Lots of gay men or lesbians choose to parent in this way. I say more power to them!

- Shawna on

What the … Well it could be true, if she used a donor egg, that would all make sense. Well good luck to them if it is.

- Nita on

Congratulations to them. But is she really carrying at the age of 50? That seems just, odd and dangerous for the Mom. But hey, whatever floats their boat.

It is just odd that a gestational carrier was not used instead.

Congrats.

- jennifer on

Wow. Wow. Wow.

This is weird and odd and I NEVER SAW IT COMING! Who did?

I’m very confused about their relationship. I mean, it’s great that she’s pregnant and is having a baby. Any child is a gift.

I still find it weird. :)

- Stephany on

Clay, if you wanted a child, why not adopt? Well..anyways, if this is what you want, I’m happy for you. Best of luck.

- Heather on

…i’m speechless.
this should leave no question to the whole clay is gay thing. it’s very will and grace.

- Carrie on

It’s none of our business who has artificial insemination, what their age is, whether they’re gay or straight or what they want to do to the child after it’s born. I repeat, it’s none of our business. This is a personal choice.

- chloe on

This is the oddest celeb pregnancy announcement to me. I wonder if Clay is just a sperm donor or will actually be a dad to this child. Very interesting indeed.

- Heather on

I’m going to make a leap here and say that they both wanted a child, didn’t feel they were going to have one by others means, are close to each other and care about each other so figured why not. I would also assume they plan to both raise their child as they seem to be very good friends by the “best friend” “sometimes live together” comment. Congrats and good luck to them both.

- kris on

Wow! While I wasn’t expecting this, I am very happy for Clay and Jaymes. Clay seems like such a sweet, caring person….I’m sure he’ll be a great father. While the situation may be a bit unconventional, the important thing is that this baby was obviously wanted and planned, so I am it sure it will be much loved. Congratuations to the parents to be.

- CTBmom on

Wow. Welcome to 2008. This is definitely a unique situation. You know, actually it could turn out for the best. The baby was planned, will probably be well cared for, and will definitely have music in its genes. If Clay and Jaymes are truly best friends they will hopefully be great co-parents.

- chris on

Wow, I didn’t expect to hear this at all. It kind of came out of left field but hey. Congrats to them both even if they didn’t conceive the traditional way. Hopefully the child will be healthy and happy. :)

- Anny on

An odd announcement… but Congratulations!

Will Clay be playing an active role or is he just the sperm donor?

- Colleen on

Is anyone else getting a Michael Jackson vibe the more they read about Clay? Not the child molestation vibe…just the oddness. The next thing you know he’ll be buying Neverland Ranch.

- Eileen on

The whole sperm donor thing – well, can’t say I saw it coming or wasn’t confused by it, but the whole, he lives with her part time, and he’s going to be a father figure? That’s the part that is just odd to me.

To each his own, but I can’t help but think of the child and wonder what kind of backlash he/she might receive. Kids can be cruel to each other, unfortunately.

- Heather on

everyone is having babies

- wow on

can i just say what the? I’m sorry I just find that just out of the blue and weird I think I’m just like every 1 else stunned!

- passml122 on

Heather: according to TMZ, Clay plans to be a father to the child and actively involved in his/her life.

- MB on

Good for them, here is the only thing I don’t get and would love to hear a comment on: Clay vehemently denies being gay (although, I mean, come on, right?) to avoid upsetting some of his fans and then chooses this path? Isn’t that kind of strange? I can imagine anyone turned off by a Broadway (!) performer being gay might also be weirded out by the 50 year old producer being pregnant with his baby outside of a relationship, right?

I think it is a courageous move though… and hope that everyone kind of respects their choice in doing so

- Nicole on

I feel the same way passml122…
of course I’m happy for them but it doesn’t make me any less shocked…

- jasmine on

Now I’m not sure if I believe it because it’s her brother’s rep confirming it; why would her brother go public with this before the actual parties involved did? hmmmm…

- Sasha on

I am a big Clay aiken fan, so this in many ways was shocking. But, it seems real to me. Clay is a great man that loves children, and I believe that he wanted to start a family sooner, than later. Praise God for blessing two people to fulfill their dreams. In earlier reports, it stated that she wanted children, but didn’t when she was married, and he would make a great dad. I do hope that if the part about him being a hands on dad are true, that everyone gives him the time, space, and mostly their support, so he can be the best dad he could be. Congrads to the both of them.

- nancy on

well….ok….Congratulation!!
I’m so confused and surprised

- ma74 on

This should have been titled “…and in News that is Stranger than Fiction…”

- SewCalMom on

This should have been titled “…and in News that is Stranger than Fiction.”

- SewCalMom on

why is everyone so focused on his sexuality and the sperm donor part?? Clay seems like a very down to earth, sweet and simple kind of man. I think he will make an excellent father. Maybe she decided she wasn’t getting any younger and there is her best friend and he is a guy and why not??? Who cares about the intimate details anyway??? I was just surprised she is supposedly 50!!

- tink1217 on

Clay has never said that he was gay. It has always been rumours. He grew up a regular, but nerdy, North Carolina Christian boy. Never any signs of “gayness”. Jaymes is a woman, and a beautiful one at that who looks much younger than her years. From what I’ve heard, IVF was not used. She is still pre-menopausal. It happens.

- Daze on

Jeez, I guess I didn’t realize CBB readers were so conservative. What’s the big deal? I think it’s great, congratulations to both of them.

- Alice on

I am so happy for them both! They solved a problem in a smart way. Both obviously wanted a child and in my opinion, made a practical decision. More power to them!

- Daisy Kay on

I don’t think it has that much to do with being conservative (at least not in my case) because I am anything but, it’s just more so that this seems sooo random!

- jasmine on

Don’t know either personally so have no idea on how they will be as parents or not. But so I didn’t about myself lol

Just wish them well !

And honestly, kids will only be as cruel as we parents allow them to be.

Time to learn something about love :o )

- kiki on

:-O

This is kind of in the same realm of Lisa Marie Presely marrying Michael Jackson.

I’m going to assume (though we should never do that, right?!?!) that they are both gay and want a child and this situation works for them.

Congrats to them and I wish her a healthy pregnancy & delivery!

- Christine on

I’m having trouble understanding why everyone thinks that Clay must be gay because they used artificial insemination. Does that mean that you sleep with all of your close friends of the opposite sex??

I have no real opinion on whether he is gay or not and honestly don’t care. I just don’t see why he now has to be gay since he didn’t sleep with his friend to get her pregnant. As others have said, it’s possible to make a rational decision to have a child even if you’re not involved romatically, especially if one of you is running out of time.

- Hope on

Every interview where Clay has been asked the “gay” question he has said things like, I don’t feel I need to speak about my sexuality to anyone. I am not going to talk about that right now. Come on! Those are clear signs that your in the closet and not ready to come out. If your not gay you would deny it in a heartbeat! And if I were a fan of Clay I think I’d be more upset that he can’t just accept who he is and be proud of his sexuality. I don’t think he’d lose any fans over it and I am certain that most of his fans are not blind to it already. Granted he has never formally said anything so nobody really can claim that he is. But this story is just wierd. But if it’s what they BOTH wanted then I say in this day in age, do whatever floats your boat. Just as long as nobody gets hurt!

- J.M. on

Wow congrats

- brooke on

I think I would have much more respect for him – if he is gay – if he would just finally admit it and quit dodging the issue. I trust the baby will be loved and cherished regardless of the way he/she is coming into the world. But what a weird set of circumstances …

- Sheri on

To see what the evil spawn of Clay Aiken might look like, head to http://www.itwouldbescary.com

There is a generated photo of what a baby Aiken might look like.

- Jon on

Clay has mentioned in many interviews in the past that he is NOT gay. I can understand that if a man comes across as effimenite, people are going to just assume they’re gay. I was married to a man with some effiminite qualities but guarantee he’s 100% hetero. The difference with Clay is now he’s so sick of hearing the question over and over again, he’s simply not going to answer it. He’s already said he’s straight and if no one wants to believe it then it’s their problem, let alone none of their business.
Whether this is true or not, I wish them and the baby well. Also, who can say that they didn’t try getting pregnant the natural way and that artificial insemination was the only way? Or maybe they BOTH wanted a baby now and agreed to do it together without having a romantic relationhip. Why does AI automatically determine HIS orientation?!? He’s a great, talented man of character. I wish him happiness.

- Windgoddess on

Clay reminds me of a younger Michael Jackson, and unfortunately, that’s not a good thing. I just hope he’s happy and that the child is loved and treated like a normal little boy or girl.

- kim on

He has shown his ability to work with children. And his love for children. It appears that he will make a great father.

Congratulations!

- jennifer on

Can someone please clarify the definition of “artificial insemination”? I thought it meant insertion of sperm without actual intercourse, i.e. with a turkey baster. I didn’t think it necessarily meant “IVF” which is very expensive and complicated. David Foster says “she was artificially inseminated by Clay.” Does this mean Clay provided the swimmers? Or that he operated the baster?

- Susan on

Clay doesn’t have to say if he’s gay or not. This is his own business…why does he need to go scream what his sexual orientation is from the top of the roof? And Jaymes doesn’t have one foot in the grave…just because she’s in her late 40s doesn’t mean the only way she could pregnant is by using an egg donor. Amazing the stories people come up with. Congrats to both of them. Wish them nothing but the best!!

- Jay on

I guess I’m just a little confused as to why the statement had to mention it was “artificial inseminaton” almost as a disclaimer..yeah she’s pregnant..But he’s didn’t sleep with her! sort of thing.

Why not just simply state they’re having a child together?

- Delilah on

AI is when a man’s sperm is collected and put inside a woman’s womb in hopes that they will fertilize at least one of her eggs.

IVF is where a man’s sperm is collected and a female’s eggs are collected and are “met together” in a petri dish, then the fertliized eggs are implanted back into the female womb.

- Ashley on

I personally would’nt want to be pregnant in premenopausal age, nor have a preschooler/early grade schooler while going through menopause, Lord help me..lol but to each their own.

Maybe with AI they were able to take some measures to make sure the egg was fertilized? Like, perhaps the dr and her were making sure she was inseminated at just the right time, who knows? Other than that, it’s sort of an odd way of conceptions if IVF isn’t needed, but whatever. It’s just sort of sad that she’ll be 70 when the child is only in college, if she lives that long.

My grandma is healthy at 76 with some minor health issues, but she’s a GREAT grandma. My son is almost 18 and she’s had a relationship with him and his younger siblings from day one. I can’t imagine not being healthy and young enough to help with grandchildren–and if I’m blessed enough– great grandchildren like my grandparents have. At 25, the average age of the first time mom (non-celebrity mom) this mom will be 75!

- Melissa on

Am I the only one that finds it a little creepy that a 50 year old is having a baby? I mean this child will never be able to get to know his or her grandparents and will not have any siblings. I mean will she have the energy at 67 to play soccer with her teenager? I know a lot of people disagree but I think it’s very selfish to choose to have a child that late.
