Babytalk unveils 'Golden Pacifier' award winners, singles out Nicole Richie, Ricki Lake
The magazine which brought you the Stinky Diaper awards wants you to know that it’s not all doom and gloom in the world of celebrity babies and their parents. Babytalk recently announced the winners of its 2008 ‘Golden Pacifier’ Awards, honoring "baby advocating newsmakers and pro-moms," and several CBB regulars have been singled out.
Winner of the ‘Knocked Up, Grown Up’ award goes to Nicole Richie. Babytalk lauded Nicole’s transformation from Hollywood wild-child to responsible, earnest mom in the months leading up to — and since — the birth of daughter Harlow Winter Kate, 4 ½-months. Also garnering points with the magazine was the establishment by Nicole and boyfriend Joel Madden of the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation, through which the couple has donated thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of baby goods to needy parents.
The magazine raised a "tall, curvy goblet of sparkling grape juice" to celebrity moms like Salma Hayek (shown at right; mom to Valentina Paloma, 8-months), Halle Berry (mom to Nahla Ariela, 11-weeks tomorrow) and others who gained the "requisite 30-plus pounds" with their pregnancies. Babytalk cheered these formerly pregnant celebs who "went through pregnancy resembling not snakes that swallowed basketballs but, rather, the ripe, round, and alluringly busty beauties they should be during the all-important nine months."

Her documentary The Business of Being Born earned Ricki Lake a nod, with Babytalk applauding the "brave" decision by the 39-year-old former talk show host — who executive produced the film — to include footage of her 2001 homebirth with son Owen, turning 7 next month. Although a midwife-assisted natural birth isn’t for everyone, Ricki deserved praise for "presenting expectant moms with an oft-overlooked option — and sparking an important conversation about the state of modern childbirth," the magazine said.
With a different outlook entirely, Access Hollywood co-host Nancy O’Dell won the ‘Taking Aim At Pain’ award by uttering three little words: "I love epidurals." Babytalk noted that "the merciful cocktail-from-behind may not be Ricki Lake’s drink of choice, but if it gets you where you’ve got to go, well, go for it." Nancy and her husband Keith Zubchevich welcomed daughter Ashby Grace, 11 ½-months, last June.
