Laura Ingraham welcomes daughter Maria Caroline

05/27/2008 at 08:45 PM ET

Calling her trip to pick up her new daughter, Maria Caroline, 3, "the most amazing few days that I’ve ever spent in my life and the best thing I’ve ever done," conservative radio talk host, Laura Ingraham, 43, announced on her show that she recently welcomed a little girl from Guatemala.

After many years of spending so much time with her friends’ kids, Laura felt a calling to be a mother — "especially to someone who didn’t have anybody."  Once there was confirmation that the adoption process had gone through, she traveled down to the orphanage — which was home to eleven children — and was greeted at the door by them all.  With only a picture of her little girl that she had received in the mail, Laura recognized her "mop-top" when she saw Maria standing by the door holding a single plastic bag — inside were all of her belongings.

Even though Laura has only been a mom for a few weeks, she insists that she is already an "irritating mother."  Like any new parent, she can’t believe how beautiful her new baby girl is and shares that Maria is already learning English (while Laura’s Spanish is definitely improving!) and calls her daughter "the smartest."

Laura, who is clearly over the moon with her newest arrival, wrapped up her big announcement with a simple, yet powerful sentence,

So, I was once an ‘I’ and now I’m a ‘we.’

Oh I am soo very happy for her… for both of them. Adoption is a beautiful thing.

I’m curious as to why this article is written as if she’s a ‘new’ mother? She has a (much) older son already.

Congrats! I am still in the process and should be welcoming my baby girl home in another month or two, God Willing! It has been the most amazing ride in my life of extremes. I have been put to the test of my strength of faith and have finally come to the realization, what is meant to be WILL BE!I wish all the best who bear their children through their hearts because it is the hardest thing I have ever been through. And I was a foster parent for 23 years!!!

Congratulations to her!! I am sure she will be a wonderful mother.

This warms my heart. I remember when Laura was battling cancer a couple of years ago. It’s so great to see such a blessing come into her life. God bless her and her new little girl!

Janna, I think you might be talking about Laura Schlessinger, another conservative commentator? She does have an older son. This Laura doesn’t.

Congratulations to her! I loved her last sentence “So, I was once an ‘I’ and now I’m a ‘we.’” =)

God bless her for giving a child that has nobody a home with lots of love.

Congratulations on Laura’s adoption of little Maria.

BTW when I first read the name “Laura Ingraham” it reminded me of “Laura Ingalls”…and then to see that she’d named her daughter Maria CAROLINE, it made me chuckle because again, another connection. lol! Pretty cute! (I wonder if Ms. Ingraham noticed the connection too? ;) )

I’m not a fan of Laura’s politics, but love isn’t a party affiliation. Her closing statement says it all. Well done, Laura!

Laura’s comment that she felt called to be a mom reminds me of a book I just finished, “Growing Girls” by Jeanne Marie Laskas. She and her husband, Alex, adopted two little girls from China, and she repeatedly expresses those same sentiments, especially about rescuing two tiny females from a country where baby girls aren’t valued.

Hhmmmm….she is proving to be just another devolved single-parent family, the type consistently excoriated by holier-than-thou, values-driven Repub-pundits like Ms Ingraham. Why didn’t she do the right thing and find a guy to marry and procreate like real Americans in the Heartland?? Why does she hate America?

Hateful, right-winged conservative adopts a baby from Guatemala…

I can’t tell whether that’s a bad joke, or a great sitcom idea. Either way, the irony is glaring.

Trevor on

I predict another right-wing commentator in the works. Can anyone say Maria Caroline Ingraham?

Doug on

Maybe this right-wing freak will stop complaining about illegal immigrants after adopting one herself.

Sammy on

I wouldn’t trust her, ever.

Wonder how her cancer is? Maybe that’s why she adopted?

Oh, Boy! This is such a big-hearted thing to do. I wish Laura and her new daughter endless happiness. God bless them both

Single Mom on

Why do conservatives spend so much time judging other people for being single moms, and then turn around and do what ever they feel like doing . . .

Melissa on

How beautiful to give a child a loving home. I wish them a wonderful life.

Mtoo on

Oh Single Mom, so you know all the conservatives in the world, then?

Why do Democrats insist that they not all be painted with the same brush, but then turn around and do it to us? Way to be hypocritical and show that you don’t have enough class to just be happy for someone.

bud nathans on

To whom ever thinks Laura already has ” a much older son.”

You got the wrong Laura.

jacque on

Who gives a damm about that stupid mentally retarded goofball kid from guatemala.

mcccmar45 on

Having adopted from Guatemala twice myself I can attest to the fact that it IS the most amazing experience ever. My daughters are now 13 and 11 but I did get them as infants – way to go Laura – Guatemalan children are the best
