Update: Brooke Smith welcomes second daughter, Lucy Dinknesh

Update: The new addition’s name is Lucy Dinknesh Lubensky, and she is 7-months old. Brooke said the adoption took over a year to complete. She shared,

Adoption is something I always wanted to do. There are 5 million orphans in Ethiopia. I just told them, ‘Boy or girl, 18 months or younger,’ and then they choose and call you when the baby’s ready. And I got the best one. She’s a pretty great mellow Zen Buddha baby.

Originally posted May 15th: Grey’s Anatomy’s Brooke Smith and her husband, Russian cinematographer Steve Lubensky, welcomed their second daughter recently through adoption.  The baby was born in Ethiopia.

Brooke, who has appeared on Weeds and Crossing Jordan, and Steve are also parents to daughter Fanny, 5.

I’m very happy for her and the family.

But it get’s me upset sometimes at times I think people forget that there kids who need homes right here in America. Like the old saying goes “Charity starts at home”. I wish celebs would remember that. Now I’m not knocking people who adopt from another country’s, but it’s just frustrating.

Also I feel bad for old kids. Usually people adopt babies.

It’s not our place to judge where people adopt from, celebrity or not. If they want to adopt here fine, if they want to adopt somewhere else fine too. As long as a child gets in a healthy home, I’m happy. Congrats to Brooke and her family on the new addition.

If you’re going to knock people who do choose to adopt, why not also knock the people who go the biological route? At least the people who adopt are taking a child out of a orphanage and into their home.

It’s personal choice and even if you don’t agree with it, you should respect it.

and as for her adopting abroad, she made the choice the was right for her family. i’m sure she didn’t “forget” about the children here. children are children, no matter where they’re born.

also there are plenty of celebrities who have adopted from the america: rosie o’donnell, sharon stone, edie falco, calista flockhart, steven spielberg/kate capshaw, etc.

I would like to hear one good reason why a child in an orphanage in America has more right to be adopted than a child in an orphanage anywhere else in the world. I just can’t get my head around people that think that way!

A child is a child, awesome another child has been saved from life in an orphanage, wherever that orphanage may stand.

To the people saying she should have adopted from the U.S.: Contrary to what you say, actually there are not that many “orphans” in this country that people are willing to adopt. There are plenty of non-white and/or disabled children who need homes but Americans tend to want a newborn healthy Caucasian baby, and there just aren’t that many who need homes.

The conditions that orphans live in in other countries like Ethiopia are absolutely unimaginable. They need homes far more. They risk DEATH if they aren’t adopted. That usually isn’t the case in the U.S.

I love the name Lucy that Brooke chose, but are they unaware that their older daughter’s name combined with the first part of their last name suggests something pretty gross? Fanny Lube… It’s unfortunate that people don’t really think about how much their child could get teased for things like that.

Dinknesh means “You are Lovely” in the local Amharic language. It is also interesting thatthey chose the name Lucy, as Lucy is the nickname given to the 3.2 million year old fossil Australopithecus afarensis skeleton found in 1974 in the Afar region of Ethiopia, which is also called Dinknesh by the Ethiopian people (incredibly famous and Ethiopians are extremely proud of the discovery). What a fitting name for her new daughter. It really reflects her country of origin.

I’m an adoptive mom, and I’m just happy when people adopt, period. All the adoptive moms I know feel the same way. Actually, I’m happy any way that a loving, nurturing person chooses to build their family. It’s certainly not my place to tell anyone how to do that. In my experience the people who are the most judgmental about adoption tend to be people that haven’t adopted and/or have no real intention to adopt. (And of course I’m not saying that all people that don’t adopt are judgmental about adoption.) Those of us who have gone through it are just happy that another child is not in an orphanage, a foster home, or whatever difficult situation they might have been born into.
