Gretchen Wilson talks about setting a good example for her daughter
Gretchen Wilson, the country singer who shot to fame with the hit song ‘Redneck Woman,’ says that she’s "walking a little taller" these days after having recently obtained her General Education Development (GED) certificate.
Dropping out of high school was a decision the 34-year-old says she regretted, and a decision she says she needed to undo in her efforts to set a good example for her daughter Grace, 7. Motivation was abundant — Gretchen says that she needed to have her father, who has his high school diploma, sign Grace’s home-schooling paperwork in order for Grace to travel with her mom to performances. She also says that she was acutely aware that her daughter would soon be needing help with homework assignments, help that she was in no position to provide.
I don’t want to be the dummy that says, ‘I don’t know how to do that.’ And I certainly don’t want her to think you can be this successful without an education.
So Gretchen hit the books and last month took — and passed — the GED, on her first attempt. Her newfound love of learning is mirrored in Grace, who absorbs information "like a sponge," Gretchen says.
She’s really different than I was when I was a kid…She loves learning and soaking up new things.
Grace is Gretchen’s only child.
