Dimpleskins Naturals: A balm for every baby
I’ve been blessed with two boys who are not diaper rash-prone. That said, when a course of antibiotics several weeks ago left our 16-month-old Sam with a red, irritated bottom it left me feeling a bit out of my depth. The old standby tube of cream in my diaper bag was doing nothing to heal the rash, let alone prevent it from worsening, and the situation was deteriorating rapidly. And then, as if on cue, our samples of Dimpleskins Naturals Bum Bum Balm ($12, shown at left) arrived in the mail. With a motto of "never a chemical, never a worry," this company brought a great deal of relief…to all involved!

Headquartered in British Columbia, Canada, Dimpleskins Naturals was founded by Jennifer A. Casey in 2001. Like so many mompreneurs, the impetus behind the company was the birth of Jennifer’s first child. On her website she writes that although commercial brands of baby skincare solutions and diaper rash treatments were readily available, she found herself concerned with their usage of synthetic perfumes and potentially toxic chemicals, as well as their potential implications for allergies. Jennifer put her decade of experience as a make-up artist and her studies in aromatherapy to good use, and set out to create her own products for baby’s delicate skin, ultimately resulting in Dimpleskins Naturals.
We recently tested Dimpleskins Naturals’ Bum Bum Balm, Sniffles Eucalyptus Rub ($10, on sale, shown above left)and Boo Boo Goo Cuts and Scrapes Salve ($12, shown below right), and loved all three products.
Bum Bum Balm was rated as one of the safest and best natural diaper creams by CosmeticsDatabase.com, recently won a Parent Tested/Parent Approved award and is listed as one of the "safest diaper cream picks" by the Environmental Working Group — and we can certainly see why. With ingredients like coconut oil, beeswax and pure lavender essential oil, the Bum Bum Balm is totally natural and organic. If you’re worried about the bioaccumulative effects of zinc oxide, fear not, because Bum Bum Balm is zinc-free. But besides looking and smelling the part, the balm really does work. Apply it at the first sign that a diaper rash is forming and continue to apply it at each diaper change until the threat has passed. Don’t worry about it running out, a little bit really does go a long way! The Bum Bum Balm creates a nice barrier while still working to heal baby’s irritated skin. After applying the Bum Bum Balm to Sam, we saw steady improvement until his bottom was healed completely.
The Sniffles Eucalyptus Rub and Boo Boo Goo were equally impressive. We especially liked the the latter, because in addition to its healing properties for cuts and scrapes it also worked great on Sam’s eczema. Like its counterpart balms, Boo Boo Goo is all natural with ingredients like cocoa butter, geranium and tea tree essential oils. It’s safe to use on children age 1 and older. Our 4-year-old Owen is completely convinced that the Boo Boo Goo has magical properties that take pain away and we’ve even caught him faking ‘boo-boos’ just so we have an excuse to dip into the goo. Whatever helps take the sting out of a real boo-boo, if and when it happens, is priceless as far as we’re concerned.
If you’re a green mama, you’ll appreciate the lengths Dimpleskins Naturals goes to to keep its products 100% natural, organic and cruelty-free. Jennifer signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, which requires that Dimpleskins Naturals refrain from using chemicals that are known — or are strongly suspected of — causing cancer, mutation or birth defects. To make the balms, she uses a gentle melting method which emits zero toxins into the environment. She avoids the addition of water in her products because it promotes bacteria growth, which can only be halted by the addition of a chemical preservative; To overcome that hurdle, she sells all her products in a solid form, naturally preserved with pure, organic Vitamin E oil. And last but not least, the products are packaged in 2 oz. food-grade tins that are heat sealed and are 100% recyclable.
It’s safe to say that Dimpleskins Naturals’ products are eco-friendly. And while that’s incredibly important, its also important that they work — and they do. Really, really well!
