Canon law controls the what or when of a baptism, not custom.

You will note that canonically, there can be one godparent, but if there are 2, one must be male and one must be female.

Baptism is conferred once, uno, une, eins. This is so important, the Church will not baptize a convert who has been baptized using the proper formula. If there is a doubt, the Church will conditionally baptize, but never tromp on a baptism known to be “good” even if it was done in the Baptist, Assemblies of God, or another trinitarian ecclesial community.

So, what is going on with Daisy Fuentes is showmanship and showing off, pure and simple. I hope somebody explained that there has to be reasonable expectation that the child will be raised Catholic for him to be baptized in the first place.

My mother chose 2 godmothers for my brother, because she can’t choose, and the priest said your allowed to have 2 godmothers and 2 godfathers if you really want. Also spanish people do something called godparents through water, and that’s usually done at home and you don’t need a priest to perform it, just some prayers and it’s done among family usually.

There’s really no reason for two sets of Godparents…other than you couldn’t choose between the two.

Eduardo Verastegui is really popular with new parents. He’s also the godfather of Ali Landry’s baby.

It must be a culture thing. There’s really no reason for two baptisms. Daisy’s dress is quite revealing.

I was thinking the exact same thing, Snow. I am also Catholic, and I have never heard of having 2 baptisms or 2 sets of godparents. Interesting.

Is there a Mexican tradition of having two sets of Godparents as well as two baptisms? I have never heard of this! Being Catholic, we have one baptism and thats it.

Anya’s note: The first ceremony was a more intimate family-oriented baptism. Pablo and Celia wanted their family to be a part of the baby’s life too, so the godparents of that ceremony were Celia’s sister and brother-in-law. The second baptism in May will include extended family and friends. Other than their choice to do family and friends separately, there is no Mexican tradition of two baptisms.
