Princess Eugenie hits the slopes for her 18th birthday

Princess Eugenie, the second daughter of Andrew, Duke of York, 48, and Sarah, Duchess of York, 48, chose to go skiing with family to mark her 18th birthday which was on March 23rd.

Reportedly, Eugenie was given the opportunity to throw a lavish birthday party much like the 2006 party given for sister Beatrice’s 18th birthday at Windsor Castle. However, the younger princess opted for something a little bit more action oriented by skiing at the Swiss resort of Verbier. And it is fitting that joining Eugenie was her mother and sister, who she describes as "my best friends in the world."

In a recent magazine interview to commemorate her 18th birthday, Eugenie spoke about the differences between herself and her sister Beatrice, 19, saying:

I just like throwing on a pair of jeans and generally being more understated.

She explained Beatrice "is more ‘Let’s do the glamour’."

Princess Eugenie is realy nice, I like her a lot. She is smart too. I enjoyed seeing her mom on the Celebrity Apprentice (i always liked her more then other other royal family members)

I think Sarah raised her daughters exceptionally well. Beatrice is so into glamour and fashion, I like Eugenie’s more informal relaxed style!

How do you pronounce Eugenie?

Wow kids really grow up fast, that includes her two girls. Both Beatrice and Eugenie are absolutely gorgeous.

I heard an interview with Sarah Ferguson and I think she pronounced it something like You gin knee. Hopefully some of the posters from the UK can tell us for sure.

Wow … I must be feeling my age. My husband and I were in London for our honeymoon when Sarah and Andrew had their wedding ~ and I remember when their daughters were born. It sounds like Eugenie has her mother’s laid-back personality even though Beatrice is the one who looks like Sarah. I think it’s so sweet that Eugenie feels that way about her mom and sister. It really reveals what great parenting she has had from Sarah and Andrew. What a great family and example they are.

Nausicaa- In an interview with Tatler, Princess Eugenie says she has problems with people mispronouncing her name. To help them out, she and her mother will say, “It’s like ‘use your knees’!!
And I found this after a quick search – Eugenie: u-zhen-EE. The “u” sound in the first syllable doesn’t exist in English. You can make it by saying “ee” and holding your mouth in the same position while rounding your lips and saying “oo” as in “food”. The consonant in the middle syllable is pronounced like the “s” in “measure” and the vowel sound rhymes with “end”. The “ee” in the last syllable rhymes with “need”.
