Dennis Quaid on his kids — Jack, T-Bone, and Z.G.

02/20/2008 at 03:22 PM ET

Dennis_quaid05_cbbMuch of the recent press around Dennis Quaid‘s children has centered on his new fraternal twins — but he won’t let anyone forget 15-year-old Jack Henry, his son with ex-wife Meg Ryan. Dennis tells USA Today and Dave Letterman that Jack is learning to drive — and that it’s somewhat scary!

In three months he’s going to be driving. I don’t care how green they’re going now, he’s going to get a Hummer — that’s his first car. At least he’ll be safe — I don’t know about anybody else!

He’s definitely going to be an actor. He’s very into girls and school plays. He’s very bonded to Daisy [True, Meg's 3-year-old daughter]. It’s fantastic for Jack having alittle brother and sisters now. He really wanted to have a littlebrother, and I really wanted to have a little girl, so we all got whatwe wanted.

Dennis, who says he’s gotten to know Daisy ‘a little bit,’ also has a special place in his heart for Kimberly Buffington Quaid, 36, and the sacrifices she has made to be his wife.

[She had] a successful real estate career and a home in Austin, [TX]and was pulling down 200K a year. Then she moved out herewith me. Really, all she ever wanted was to be a stay-at-home mom.

She now has her chance, as twins Zoe Grace and Thomas Boone are now a happy and healthy 3 months old. However, the typical twin dilemmas Dennis has spoken about previously are still an issue for the couple.

Having two is actually like having four, because you don’t have enough arms, so we’re looking into that. There might be that circus deal where you can use your feet … and they always seem to go for the mostdangerous things in the room, anytime.

Calling the babies ‘T-Bone’ and ‘Z.G.,’ Dennis shared iPhone photos and discussed their developing personalities with both Dave and Regis and Kelly.

They just discovered each other like three days ago.It was a great epiphany for them, because up until then they didn’t really recognize anyone else. Now they know that there’s someone there, and they’re sort of eyeing each other.

She’s like a little princess, she sleepsthrough the night, she’s very patient and just takes life as it comes. And he makes every sound known to man. [laughs] It’sincredible. He’s an animal that must be satisfied immediately or there will be hell to pay! [laughs]

A health bonus has come with the birth of the twins and their ensuing medical issues — Dennis finally quit smoking.

The one thing that really came out of that for me, after a veryhorrific two weeks, is that I will never take another day for grantedin my life, because if they hadn’t made it, I never would have hadanother happy day in my life.

I figured, I want to be around when they’re 40, if I can. They stuck around for me, so I’m going to try to stick around for them.

I think the comment Dennis makes about his 15 yo son getting a hummer is cute, but at the same time I think it’s incredibly irresponsible for parents to provide inexperienced drivers with these monster-mobiles. These teen drivers are taking over the highways and taking far too many lives each year. I am hoping his further comment about not ensuring anybody else’s safety was tongue-in-cheek- if not, I don’t think I can like him anymore! Sorry for the rant, just my 2 cents for what it’s worth :)

Sarah’s note: It definitely was just a joke (although perhaps not the best one to make), if you click the Huffington Post link the video, he and Dave are laughing.

Glad the twins are okay but the car comment struck me a bit the wrong way too. Even after watching the video I don’t think it was that funny. I also am less than charmed with his comment about his wife. As if women who combine work and the care for their kids – and who don’t even have the help of a fulltime nanny like they have – are worth less in some way. I guess I’m missing a funnybone or something.

And it seems his attempt to quit smoking was shortlived too, as he was pictured with a lit cigarette and a package of ciggies in his hand just last weekend.

I love his nicknames for them, and the twins seem to be so animated and already developing some cute personalities. They seem so lovable!

But I think it’s great that he’s quit smoking for them! He’ll benefit from that in the long run, I’m sure. His entire family will.

Awwww. I am so happy the family is doing well. And I am sure that because they plan on moving back to Texas once Jack is in college is making life in California easier on his wife. I read in an interview a little while back where Dennis said that they plan to move back to Texas once Jack is in college.

Linda- Unless he went into more detail on the shows than is posted here, Dennis never specified exactly when he quit smoking. He very well could have JUST quit (in otherwords, after he was seen with the cigarettes this weekend).

Also, keep in mind that, for some people, quitting smoking can be an extremely difficult, painful process. Not everyone can just go cold turkey (I am not, nor have I ever been a smoker, but I have known plenty of ex-smokers over the years and I have also heard plenty of stories about people who have had trouble quitting smoking).

No, the USAtoday interview was done before the cigpictures,CelebBabyLover. But I do hope he tries again because it’s so much better not to be smoking!

I find it funny that anytime there is something humorous posted here and said by a celebrity there is always a little pack of old bittys ready to bite. Can one person please just have a little opinion without it being so offensive? I live in Berkeley CA and have from birth and I have far fewer nasty remarks than most here…you’d think it would be the other way around!

I think it is so strange that anything a celebrity says, even when it’s obvious they are joking, and everybody GETS the joke as they are saying it, is taken out of context by the gossipy old ladies over the back fence on websites. The comments Dennis Quaid made about his son and the hummer were JOKES merely expressing any concerned dad’s worry when your kid’s start driving. You don’t actually mean them;sometimes jokes relieve anxiety, believe it or not.

Later on he stated that he was looking for a tank for Jack to drive. Again, illustrating any parent’s worry about the safety of his child doing something inherently dangerous bit which every parent has to face realistically. Did he really mean a tank? He immediately amended the joke by saying that he’s not really worried because “Jack has a good head on his shoulders”.

Why do so many posters play old-biddy control mavens? Wanting to dissect everything celebs say and do. Not everything has to be deadly serious, gals. For goodness sake! Get a sense of humor. Better still, stop following celebrities if you cannot control them and their lives and have no sense of the larger picture.

I thought his remarks were hilarious about Jack & the Hummer. I could tell he was joking. However, I think he should also be showing photos of Jack along with the twins. Surely he has a photo of Jack somewhere in that iphone.
I don’t understand how Kimberly has made any sacrifices to be his wife. Especially to deserve admiration. Sorry, but $200K a year is not a lot of money compared to what Dennis makes, so she really didn’t give up anything but a house in Austin. I understand they have a home in Austin and still spend a lot of time there, so what’s the big deal? I doubt very seriously that she has it that bad living here in California. Nope, don’t feel any sympathy for Kimberly. She knew what she was getting when she said I do.
I read in an interview a day or so ago that Dennis quit smoking the day they brought the twins home from the hospital after their medical crisis. I too saw a picture of him smoking when he was in Berlin this past weekend. I so hope he will one day be able to finally kick the habit.
I think it is so sweet that he has also gotten to know Daisy a little bit. Sounds like Dennis and Meg are on good terms which is great for Jack.

Oooooo We are sensitive today!! Taking things too seriously.

I think any woman who gives up a job with a lucrative salary to be with the man she loves and relocates to his current city is making a sacrifice. I’m sure it’s one she made happily but it is a sacrifice.

And, not everyone woman finds it satisfying to be living off of their husband’s money. Some women like making their own way in this world and are not just out to latch onto a sugar daddy.

She’s a business woman who knows how fast they forget you when you’ve been away from your industry for a long period of time to raise a family. If she does decide to go back to work, it will almost be like starting from scratch.

I don’t think Dennis was asking anyone to feel sorry for his wife. He was clearly showing his appreciation for her. He probably dated a lot of women before her who were wannabe playboy bunnies who had their hand out.

I actually have more respect for women who go into a marriage with a successful man who in fact have their own goals, successes, dreams, and income.

LOL I thought the comment about the Hummer was funny. And even if he wasn’t playing it wouldn’t make him a bad person. I didn’t see anything in those excerpts that were so offensive. Oh well, whatever. He and his wife seem happy…nice little article to read.

Chicki on

I’m not old at all – nor am I a biddy! I am usually the one who thinks that people are overly sensitive when it comes to jumping all over celebrities, but I just didn’t find that comment funny, especially since so many parents seek to emulate celebs in what clothing, toys and cars they buy for their children. In that respect, I don’t think that’s something that should be joked about. That’s the only point I was making – and I hope my comment didn’t offend or discourage any of you who would consider buying a 15 year-old child a hummer!

magenta on

Give me a break. Most parents know an off-color joke when they read one. And most parents while being fascinated with celebrity parents and the products they use have enough sense to know what type a car to buy for a teenage driver. We (parents) can make a sensible decision without the help of a celebrity or a humorless poster. A joke is a joke. If you didn’t like it, fine. But don’t qualify your comment by pretending you’re so worried about impressionable parents. It’s insulting.
