Al D'Amato Sr. says son is "an incredible blessing"

Although just 5-days old, Alfonse Marcello D’Amato Jr. already has 14 nieces and nephews — including one who is about to graduate from college.  But if his dad, former Republican Senator Alfonse D’Amato, is feeling fazed by fatherhood at 70 he certainly isn’t showing it.  Says Al Sr.,

This is an incredible blessing that God has given us.

Born on Super Tuesday, Alfonse Jr. had his first official press conference as he was discharged from North Shore University Hospital on Long Island, where he was delivered weighing 5 pounds 14 ounces.  The timing of his birth was appropriate, given that Alfonse Jr. is "the littlest and youngest McCain supporter," joked Al Sr.  On a more serious note, Al Sr. added that his son would be free to choose his own political affiliation — even if it means becoming a Democrat.  Says Al Sr.,

We want him to do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do, and not because somebody is looking.

Alfonse Jr. is the first child for Al Sr. and his wife Katuria.  Al Sr. also has four children with ex-wife Penelope, whom he divorced in 1995.
