Author and blogger Cory Doctorow welcomes first child

Canadian blogger and science fiction author Cory Doctorow, 36, and his partner Alice Taylor have welcomed their first child together. Daughter Poesy Emmeline Fibonacci Nautilus Taylor Doctorow was born February 3rd at their London home, weighing in at 9 lbs and 6 oz. Cory himself commented,

I am ecstatic to announce a new Happy Mutant on the scene: Poesy Emmeline Fibonacci Nautilus Taylor Doctorow. Hatched at home, in a pool, this morning, in London, weighing 9 lbs and 6 oz. All bits correct and accounted for. Already stolen the hearts of all who see her. Consider me on paternity leave until further notice.

He also gives explanations for the names: Poesy is after Renaissance poet Philip Sidney’s work Defense on Poesie (1595); Emmeline after Emmeline Pankhurst, one of the founders of the womens’ rights’ movement in England; Fibonacci after the famous sequence of numbers; and Nautilus after the fictional submarine of Captain Nemo in Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870).

I suppose that a woman is entitled to choose whatever name she wants after delivering a 9+ lb baby at home (and naturally, I presume), but this is the silliest, most self-indugent name I have ever heard of!

I had a nine pound, 13oz baby girl with no gestational diabetes. Sometimes its just genetics. I had an epidural, though — I’m amazed that this lady went natural!

Both my boys weighed 9lb 9oz (no GD) and both were born naturally and drug-free. Thankfully my daughter was a little smaller at 8lb 4oz, and didn’t hurt *quite* so much!

Now they are all tall and super-slim, as Chelsa said, it was just genetics, their Dad is 6′ 4″!

I love the name ‘Poesy’, it was on the shortlist for my daughter, although I would have spelled it ‘Posy’. The rest is a bit of a mouthful, but each to their own

3 brothers – all over 12 pounds! beat me up if you will but I was more than grateful when my doctor suggested inducing my son a few weeks early to avoid problems with my son (9/4 and 3 weeks ahead of schedule)

that baby sure does appear to have some features of Down syndrome. The eyes, the low set ears, the bridge of her nose. She is beautiful, of course.

My second daughter (born 10/21/07) was 9 lbs 13 oz at birth, and I delivered her without drugs in a tub at a birthing center (I wanted a water birth so bad and I’m glad I got to experience it!) I didn’t have gestational diabetes. It’s funny that people are starting to think of 5 lbs and 6 lbs babies as the norm in terms of health (anything over is considered gd or fat) when they’re really not (that is, if mom and dad aren’t really tiny themselves.)

I have to ask this but how do you pronounce the name Poesy?
Because we in the Netherlands would pronounce this as well, eh, P*ssy. (Sorry, it’s really true.)
So i was just wondering how this name is pronounced in the US.
