Joel Madden and Nicole Richie pick up diapers

Rocker Joel Madden, 28, and girlfriend Nicole Richie, 26, were snapped on a quick diaper run on Tuesday. Apparently, Seventh Generation is their brand of choice for 3-week-old daughter Harlow Winter Kate‘s bottom!

I hope they bought more than just 1 size. Babies grew way too fast.

- Amanda C on

I love that they are doing this all themselves! It’s just such a nice change of pace to see celeb parents (especially brand new, first time ones) actually being “normal” parents!

Looks like they stocked up!

- Tracy on

Nicole is looking great! And I have no doubt they are going to be wonderful, every day parents!

- uggamugga.blogspot.com on

Wow! Nicole looks great!

- Jasmine on

They seem so connected and in love. Glad they are out getting some air.

- PSB on

If they are picking up diapers by themselves, i’m pretty sure they are changing diapers by themselves too. Nicole was raised by a Nanny most of her life and she hated it. I doubt she would be nothing short of a hands on mother.

she looks really pretty by the way, almost photoshopped! her skin is flawless.

- Ellen on

I don’t know, I think Nicole looks a little too skinny for just having a baby.

Sarah’s note: Here’s a post Joel’s good friend sent us because she knew a lot of people might say that. Apparently she’s naturally a small girl and nursing is just burning the calories, kind of like what happened with Angelina Jolie (and she finally said something about it)!

- Sara on

i think nicole looks ok now compared to what she looked like a year ago.

But talking that she is naturally thin is just silly – did you forget the first series of simple life? she looked like that for at least 20 years of her life before she suspiciously lost like half of her weight a few years ago.

Sarah’s note: I don’t know, I honestly haven’t ever followed Nicole prior to her pregnancy. I’ve seen childhood pictures where she was small, and some larger ones, but I assumed that was from when she was going through her drug issues. I don’t know specifics. I’m just letting people know what friends of the family said.

- nicole on

“Doing this all themselves”? Give me a break…they don’t even have their baby with them!

- mary on

Nicole: She was a naturally thin child. You have to remember that when she began filming The Simple Life and was in the public eye, she was heavily into drugs. She became heavier when she was doing them, and then once she went to rehab, quit doing drugs, ate and lived healthily, she lost the weight. She has also acknowledged that there were times in the last few years that she was too thin, but that it was because of stress, and not an eating disorder.

I think she looks beautiful. I hope the best for this family!

- Stephanie on

Its pretty obivous that Nicole is a naturally skinny girl, I have seen her pre teen pictures. Also, remember that she was a competitive figure skater until she was 19 so she was pretty skinny until she started doing hardcore drugs and was in and out of rehab 3 times for about 4 years before the world finally saw her on TV for the simple life.

So saying that she is not naturally this size based on the first season of the simple life is not fair. I mean we saw her go through a pregnancy and give birth to a healthy baby. she only gained in her stomach. I don’t know what other proof people need to convince them that the girl is at her natural size.

I’m usually a lurker here and just decided to post for the first time because as a fellow skinny girl, i really sick of people always speculating that i’m doing something unhealthy to maintain my size.

she looks really cute by the way…

- Bianca on

She does look skinny, but not scary skinny she looks a healthy nice skinny IMO. I’m not surprised she is thin again, she wasn’t that big during her pregnancy and a lot of women lose about 20lbs within the first few weeks of giving birth, so say she gained 30lbs while pregnant she is probably back to normal already. And she was always a lot thinner than your average woman, so of course she will look thin already. Hope we see a pic of harlow soon, I bet she is adorable.

- fallon on

if they’re doing it all by themselves – then where is their baby?

- meghan on

Bianca: Drugs usually make people thin and Nicole was doing drugs since she was 13 (in her own words). Found especially for you:

“You know, pot at 13, which, in my circle, was very normal. Drinking every once in a while, but that wasn’t really my thing. And then I started getting into cocaine at like 14 or 15. And then I stopped. And, and went to heroin, at about 19, I believe,” (ABC News)

http://abcnews.go.com/2020/Entertainment/story?id=1275589

About skating: one does not have to be super thin to do that, seen lots of skaters with “normal weight” (with body mass index larger than 20). Nicole did skating in her childhood for 8 years, i can’t find now where I read it, but I remember she was done with it long before her 19th birthday (13 years or so, about the same time she claimed she first tried smoking pot).

Also to clarify things: I am personally very thin, so I do not make this comments just because I just feel jealous or want to offend anyone.

- nicole on

Are you suggesting they subject a 3 week old to the chaos of paparazzi. Running out to get diapers or coffee is now neglecting their baby???
i’m surprised at some judgemental comments about celebs these days…why not just live and let live.

- Lexington on

Hahaha I second Meghan’s post

- N on

Having just had a baby myself I must say that I am very jealous that they can leave the house without the baby to go shopping. When my husband and I go anywhere together, we are lugging around the carseat with us! Maybe it was a short trip…

- Kt on

Nicole looks no thinner than any other Hollywood celeb. No thinner than Jessica Alba, Jennifer Aniston, and every other woman that the people who post on these board idolize. She looks great, and by the oversized shirt, like she might be in her “fourth trimester” ;)

Nicole has always been thin. The only time she was not thin was when she come out of rehab–a time when most people gain weight because food tends to replace the addictive substance. I’ve seen childhood and pre-teen pictures of her where she was thinner than Paris Hilton for goodness sake. She is naturally thin, and she will always be thin. She was not doing drugs at age 6 or 7 or 8! So Nicole your speculation about her “natural size” is not only unfounded, it’s ludicrous. Get over yourselves. The public clearly loves to bring down the same celebs who they idolize–as is apparent on this board.

- Annie on

FYI: Pot does not make people thinner. In fact, many would argue that they gained weight when they started smoking pot. Google, “the munchies.” So whatever point about her being skinny at 13 because she was smoking pot at that age is moot.

- Annie on

Lexington, who said anything about them neglecting the baby I don’t see a post that says that anywhere?

- Lauren on

Buying 7th Gen dipes? Great.

Not bringing your own bag and using crap-plastic to carry them home? Not so great.

- Principesa on

Nicole:
Not to jump into your discussion but you do come off somewhat critical. The fact is that you do not know her at all. the stuff you posted is based on assumptions. You don’t know how her body reacted to drugs. she started doing drugs casually at 13 pot and alcohol. that is not going to make anyone gain any significant amount of weight. It was after she was 19 and started the hard core drugs cocaine and heroin did her weight start to go up and down for a few years. that because she was in and out of rehab 2 or 3 times, not sure.

May i also point out that when Nicole Richie was first confirmed to be pregnant. A lot of people on here deemed it impossible based on the fact that we were all so convinced she was not even capable of ovulating. I will admit that i thought the same. 9 months and a healthy baby later, birth without any complications….i guess it it safe to say that she is healthy enough and all this criticism about her size sounds kinda envious to me. just the vibe i’m getting.

- Danica on

This is a great example of Danielle’s quote that so many people criticized a few weeks ago.

And I sincerely think people here are more obsessed with celebs’ weight than the celebs, themselves. WTF does it matter to posters here how skinny someone is or how another woman’s baby weight comes off?

- sigh on

These comments are getting a little out of hand with all of the judgments of these two young new parents. Just because they didn’t bring their newborn with them does not mean that they are not doing it themselves. I left my newborn with a family member or my best friend for an hour or so once or twice a week to run an errand by myself, as do many parents that are “doing it themselves”. It’s not as if Joel and Nicole have been seen out partying every night or anything.
Besides if they had brought the baby out they would have been hounded and swarmed by paparazzi to get a picture, and I am sure that for the baby’s safety they would not want to subject her to that. So let’s give these two a break and lay off the judgmental comments. And as a mom I would have to say let’s use some manners and “If you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all”.

- kelly on

De-lurking to say that Nicole has been pretty public about her swings in weight. She was indeed very thin as a child and a teenager, and said she gained a ton of weight while in rehab because there was nothing to do but sit around and eat. Wish I could find the article where she said it, but I remember reading it a few times. Once she finished her stint(s) in rehab she got back down to her normal weight. Hope that helps straighten things out!

- Kristen on

Where’s their kid? With nannies I suppose…..

Sarah’s note: Maybe? Nicole’s mom has been staying with them too.

- Moon on

If I was a celebrity and had paparazzi chasing me around and possibly endangering my child, I’d leave her at home (with a nanny, with family) and go get diapers without her too. Think of how scary it would be with them being swarmed if they had Harlow with them. Props to them for leaving her at home and keeping her safe!!

- Kelsie on

Some doctors advise against taking the baby out, prior to the 6 week mark. I can recall biting at the chomp, waiting for that day, when my little ones were small. Unless, of course, it is for a special occasion. Last, that I checked, the procurement of diapers, would not rank up there with a Christening or visit to grandma.

So, kudos to her, for following the most prudent course of action, as regards the health of her baby.

- Becky on

not that my opinion makes any difference, but i was really proud of her for having a vaginal birth & now breastfeeding. 7th gen is a great brand. i wonder if they’ve considered cloth or babywearing. i always thought “slightly thicker nicole” was way sexier than “ultra skinny nicole.” kinda like cam diaz (in “the mask” w/jim carrey).

- sewathomemama on

I think Nicole is naturally thin, too. However, once she started to go back to her normal size, the media started covering her more. In my opinion, she lost more weight because of the pressure and attention she was getting. I think it was very obvious at one point that Nicole was underweight. She even sought help from doctors. I hope having a baby helps her to focus on something more important than her body and the pressure from society.

- megan on

How judgemental can you be? They have a three week old daughter and have most likely been stuck in the house, caring for her. So what if they take an hour or two to make time for themselves. They went and bought diapers. I know…the insanity of them trying to go out and by diapers for their child.

Maybe Harlow was being taken care of by a nanny or maybe a relative of theirs offered to watch her for a few hours. Either way, what does it matter to you?

And talking about using a plastic bag instead of one they brought from home is ridiculous. They obviously can’t do anything right.

- Avery on

You know…you can buy those diapers online and have them delivered right to your door…then they wouldn’t have to leave the baby and wouldn’t have to take her out in public either. ;-)

- Erika on

Yes Erika, they should have had diapers delivered. Always have food delivered and home school Harlow so all three of them will never have to come out of the house and then they can care for and bond with their kid the right way!?

This is exactly why Nicole Richie is famous, everyone has an opinion about how she should live her life. Ridiculous.

- Danica on

ERIKA, how dare you suggest that they stay in the house, and order diapers online. Do YOU stay in the house every single day? Do you order your groceries online? Do you buy your diapers on line? I did not think so.

- LALA on

Um, so, I’m pretty sure Erika was kidding. You know that thing that people do from time to time where they say something in jest which is meant to be taken in a light, silly way? I think that’s probably why she put the smiley emoticon there ;-) Probably she was referencing the fact that these people can’t do anything without getting criticized. Either they leave the baby at home, or they take her with them. Apparently neither is a good option. Or they buy environmentally safe diapers, but they take them home in plastic bags…I think they probably took them home in the bags that the store gave them.

- Aubrey on

Sarah, I think you need to install a sarcasm detector on this site. Clearly some readers desperately need it.

Sarah’s note: That would be amazing.

- Lauren on

Wow, she’s being criticized for not bringing a cloth bag to bring the diapers home in. Can Nicole do ANYTHING right for some people?

- Rebecca on

Ahhh! Do you guys KNOW how you sound?! Like a bunch of hens…pick pick pick. Come on. If you’re going to pick on someone, make it someone who deserves it. A nursing mom who’s been seen in public only a few times since her child’s birth, runs out with her partner to pick up needed diapers. Let’s all throw stones!!

- Debbu on

Who cares how skinny she is as long as she’s looking after herself and Harlow? And as for the “Where are the baby” comments, I bet just as many people would be jumping up and down if she was subjecting a 3 week old to the obvious mayhem that is the paparazzi surrounding her…

- Lauren on

I find it strange when I see people taking their newborns outside, not when they leave them at home with family, nurse, nanny, etc. (and most people don’t have the paparazzi after them). A 3 week old baby has no business being in a supermarket. The only time we take the baby anywhere before the 6 week mark is to the doctor and the Christening.
This is really silly, most posters here sound petty and jealous (apart from the few who are realistic about life, even if these are celebs, lol). I mean two new parents buying diapers, wow how controversial.

- Sanja on

Whoa, reading these posts brings me back to when my son was a newborn. Within weeks of giving birth, I was thinner than I had been pre-pregnancy (which was already underweight). The amount of snide comments I received was unbelievable, and not that helpful to a new sleep-deprived mother.

As for her leaving the house without the baby- has anyone here had a baby? The few times I got to go to the grocery store with my husband during those first few weeks were pure bliss! And hubby’s mother was all too happy to be looking after her grandson. It’s not healthy to be cooped up in the house for 6 weeks, it’s definitely not healthy for the baby to go to somewhere like a supermarket that early. Even new mothers deserve a break.

Seriously people, chill out and give the poor girl a break. I’m sure she’s doing the best she can, just as we all do :)

- Bess on

I feel for Nicole, I know how hard it is on your body to lose baby weight that you want to keep! I always had a problem gaining weight. I have 3 kids, and I started out every pregnancy between 100-110lbs, gained 40lbs with 1st, 25lbs 2nd, 60lbs 3rd, and I lost all weight all times within weeks of my kids births. I am just naturally thin, and everyone was like “how did you do that, are you eating?”. I was like YES,lol. So, I don’t know Nicole, I just can kinda relate to her.

- kaylee on

Okay they have a 3 week old baby and they don’t take her out, and its assumed that they OBVIOUSLY have a nanny?? COME on lots of people get help from family the first couple weeks! Give me a break!

- Diana on

I’m pretty sure her mom is staying with them, or at least there everyday. And she had a full time nurse the first two weeks.
They don’t have a nanny, but i’m sure they will get one in a few months when things settle down.

- Cindy on

I think Nicole’s a good deal thinner than Aniston, Alba, etc. I trust that she’s healthy though. I always see her out eating! She looks great.

- terri on

Some people are kind of ridiculous when they’re all, “Where’s the kid?” Maybe with grandparents? You know it’s not a crime for a grandma or grandpa to take care of their little granddaughter once in a while. I’m sure Nicole’s mom and dad, and Joel’s mom are there for Harlow. Also, some people go back to work after 2, 3 weeks, and they deal.

- fan on

Perhaps we should focus on something other than the fact that Nicole is skinny, or they are using plastic bags to carry diapers.. or where the baby is. Thats not any of your concern. Would you rather have them bring the baby OUTSIDE and have her LIFE put in DANGER so that the photographers who, FOLLOW them to get the MONEY SHOT, can CASH IN on an INNOCENT BABY?

Think of what is better for that child. Also for Nicole and Joel. The paparazzi are relentless in their pursuit for photos. They don’t care WHOSE life they put in danger…

..look at what they do to poor Britney

- Doesn't matter on

Wow, I amazed! They go out alone to buy diapers and suddenly people think they have an army of nannies at home. They have said before when they go out that Harlow’s grandma was watching her. How normal is that! How many of us left our child with our parents for a few hours to pick something up. Look at how crazy the paps can get for one shot. Even if they weren’t celebs I think leaving Harlow at home was a fantastic parenting choice. You have to remember that its RSV season and that is really dangerous. Even if it weren’t so many Pediatricians tell new parents not to take their babies out in public for a while just because their immunities are still building up. Bravo to them for not hiring nannies to raise their child.

- Elisabeth on

WoW…They went out to buy diapers! What parent doesn’t do this? Because they are famous,, It gets put out everytime they step out of their door! If they weren’t famous would anybody care? NO…So leave them alone && let them have their privacy???
