I think the issue with babies in car seats is actually to do with breathing problems not plagiocephaly (which could just as easily occur in a flat bassinet pram). In an infant seat the head is tilted forward which can occlude the trachea meaning they can’t breathe properly and can die.

That said, it’s impossible to make a judgement call from one picture. Who knows how far they were going, or as a pp said, the could have been in a cab, go for a walk, then catch a cab home in which case there’s really no other option.

Deb- I see your point, but in order to keep the baby inside for the first 6 weeks, the mom DOES pretty much have to stay inside for 6 week as well if she doesn’t have a nanny or a family member who lives nearby. I don’t know of any mom who has been or is comfortable leaving her less than six week old baby with anyone other than a family member or a very, very close friend.

Anyway, the fact of the matter is, like you yourself pointed out, babies can be exposed to germs inside just as easily as they can outside! In otherwords, even if you were to keep them indoors for 6 months, they might still catch RSV or some other illness.

In fact, I have even heard that, as Ana said, it can actually be more dangerous for your baby in the long run if you over-protect them (keep them indoors until six week, make sure they’re in a sterile enviornment, etc.). A baby’s immune system cannot get stronger unless it is exposed to some germs. If the immune system isn’t exposed to those germs, then the baby won’t be able to fight off illness as well.

Also, a little fresh air is actually good for babies, especially in the summer when it isn’t so cold.

My doctor, told me the best thing I can do is for the 1st 6 weeks keep my baby inside. Germs are not just inside they are outside too. Their immune systems are NOT built up enough, thats why they say to try and keep babies inside, NOT THE MOM, the baby!

(RSV) infection is easy to catch (highly contagious). It is common for children to develop viral infections such as RSV if they are often exposed to infected people and have not built up immunity. There is no sure way to prevent respiratory illnesses in babies and children.

Aw, again. Well, here in Europe almost everybody uses travel systems (especially Chicco’s, such as CT.01 and Bebé Confort’s, such as Loola). Most brands make them to be travel systems, you can only use the seat after using the stroller as a travel system (such check the websites out and you’ll see. And their using a Bugaboo whoch sells adaptors to use the frame as a travel system, so of course it is safe and great to use the car seat). All babies look normal, well, they ARE normal. My nephew is 1 month old and he uses a Peg’s travel system. It’s easier and is just as safe (or safer)!
If travel systems were dangerous they wouldn’t be sold, or if they did people would have to be told. Come on people, in the EU (where I am, so that’s why I’m talking about Europe) we cannot eat animal margarine because it isn’t sold anymore (I know this sounds like a stupid analogy but it’s not).
People should be more worried with walkers. Many countries have completely forbidden them.
Most kids go to the streets before 2 month old! Come on, it’s impossible to be 2 months locked up in your house (unless you have a nanny) and because there’s NOTHING wrong with taking your baby for a walk. Air is very good for a baby and besides most kids have problems now because they’re too protected from the environment they’ll end up living in.

But it’s their baby, it’s not our business. The baby’s healthy, they look fine and happy, who are us to say whatever?!

… not to mention, most people have babies in the most germ infested environment around a ton of people they don’t know – at birth. After that exposure taking them out for a walk is certainly not a big deal.

About the plagiocephaly comments… plagiocephaly means asymmetrical head shape and can be caused by a number of things. More info is available here if anyone’s interested.

My daughter had torticollis (wry neck) which I’d never heard of before she was diagnosed with it, but because of this she had mild plagiocephaly. Luckily it wasn’t necessary to go the helmet route to treat it – we had to do physiotherapy for the torticollis and didn’t do anything for the head shape since it wasn’t that pronounced. But a walk in the car seat won’t cause it!

I don’t care about them taking him out in the cold weather and seriously — one walk in a carseat does not equal plagiocephaly (which by the way can be caused just as easily by a baby simply preferring to always sleep on the same side or because the baby sleeps consistently on their back without rolling).

What I want to say is that Julianna looks amazing! And I also want to know where Graco is handing out all these Metropolitan Snugrides… or is this the only one available in Hollywood. It’s like the “in” carseat these days! (not that that’s a bad thing)
