That is exactly how both my kids caught RSV, from going outside before 8 weeks old! Their immune systems arent ready for all that!

Could somebody tell me why people insist on putting their babies in car seats if they aren’t in the car??? I mean with the threat of plagiocephaly?? I am not dissing anyone here, I just do not understand it. We didn’t have travel systems when I had my kids and if I have another I will not use a travel system. The car seat will stay for use in the car. A stroller with full recline is a must for a newborn and with having something like a Bugaboo that is nearly like a bassinet…why use the car seat??? Unless there are reflux problems or something like that where baby needs to be semi upright.

Deb, I’m really sorry your kids got RSV, but it was from germs, not from them just being outside – sure it makes it easier to get those germs, but with other kids and people coming to your house it can be there too. My kids have been out early to errands and dinners and appointments and consistantly and have been fine (DS1 at 25 hours and DS2 at 11 hours). I’m careful – no one touches my babies and I breastfeed and sling them and wash my own hands… it’s a risk I choose to take.

What’s the big deal using your car seat with your stroller? My car seat was designed to fit in my stroller. I used it with both of my kid’s with my doctor’s approval and would do so if I have another. So much easier, especially when you are shopping, to transfer a sleeping baby from car to stroller. Kinda why they were made.

I carried my child in a car seat when I was in cities and using cab systems. SInce they are in NYC, perhaps this IS the safer alternative?

Deb- I’m sure they were being extra careful. Going by the product description, and what I can see of the carseat in the picture, Kieran is in the type of carseat that has a “boot” on it. I am guessing that they also had him bundled up in the carseat.
Also, they are taking him for a walk outside, not taking him to the mall or some other place where he’d be surronded by all sorts of people (and thus, all sorts of germs).
Besides all that, it is nearly impossible to avoid taking a baby outside until they reach 2 months, since most babies have their first Well-Baby doctor visit when they are one week old or younger. Granted, Julianna and Keith probably weren’t taking Kieran to the doctors. I’m just saying that it’s pretty much impossible to avoid taking a baby out at least once before they reach 8 weeks.
tink1217- I don’t have any kids of my own, but from what I’ve heard from people who do, using a travel system is handy because it allows you to transport your baby from the car to the stroller, or vice-versa, without waking them up if they are napping. I don’t know about Julianna and Keith, but most people I know that have travel systems don’t use them that often.

WHY is it wrong to have a travel system? If it was so wrong then I doubt that they would be on the market and selling. For my first two I had English prams and for my 4 month old I have a travel system. He also has reflux so the semi sitting upright position for him is nice. And what is Plagio…??
I agree that a baby shouldn’t be out in a SOCIAL situation before a month old, but taking a baby for a stroll bundled up is fine. Congrats to them!!

OK, I just read the difinition for placio..and it is NOT caused by taking your baby for a stroll in his car seat. That is absolutely ridiculous and unless you know all of the facts I don’t think that you should write such comments. And putting a little blurb at the end that says you aren’t dissing anyone particular dosn’t make it alright to say such things. HOW would you feel, if someone was giving their opinion to you on a web page as to how you raise your child?

Deb, that is the first thing that came too my mind as well! What is the point of taking a little one like that out in the cold for just a walk!! I do like julianna as an actress, miss her on ER, but wish they would stay in with the little one until spring:)!

Years ago when the carseat strollers were just becoming popular I heard that you shouldn’t use them too much, just for very short walks because it’s not good for the baby. But now I never hear this anymore and people seem to keep their babies in carseats a lot of the time.

Deb- I am surprised you would say that given that you have had children with RSV. RSV can only be contracted if a child has been exposed to the virus. A walk in the stroller with the 2 people he is around all the time is not going to cause him to get RSV. He has more of a chance catching it by being around someone that visits him in their home that has the common cold (commonly known as RSV) than by going for a walk in the cold air.

Please, let’s not go there. It’s their baby, and if they want to take him outside before 8-weeks, that is fine. Also, if they want to put him in a carseat, that is their business. WHY? It’s their baby, not yours. I think that it is a very nice picture of the family.

Wow, so much debate because a couple takes their child out before eight weeks old! Come on, my first went all the way to Europe at 11 weeks and I took him to work with me at 5 weeks. He’s healthy as a horse and he’s 7 yrs now and only been on antibiotics once for a sinus infection. My second on the other hand stayed in until about 6-7 weeks and he’s had all kinds of ear infections, asthma, colds, you name it. Let’s just congratulate Julianna and Keith on the healthy and safe arrival of their baby and let them raise THEIR baby the way they choose.

They are in NYC and this is what most people do in NYC, because you never know when you have to jump in a cab–and the alternative is NOT having a carseat when you need it. Most people who live in the city do not have a car, and it’s inconvenient to carry around a separate carseat when you are shopping, etc.

I don’t care about them taking him out in the cold weather and seriously — one walk in a carseat does not equal plagiocephaly (which by the way can be caused just as easily by a baby simply preferring to always sleep on the same side or because the baby sleeps consistently on their back without rolling).
What I want to say is that Julianna looks amazing! And I also want to know where Graco is handing out all these Metropolitan Snugrides… or is this the only one available in Hollywood. It’s like the “in” carseat these days! (not that that’s a bad thing)

About the plagiocephaly comments… plagiocephaly means asymmetrical head shape and can be caused by a number of things. More info is available here if anyone’s interested.
My daughter had torticollis (wry neck) which I’d never heard of before she was diagnosed with it, but because of this she had mild plagiocephaly. Luckily it wasn’t necessary to go the helmet route to treat it – we had to do physiotherapy for the torticollis and didn’t do anything for the head shape since it wasn’t that pronounced. But a walk in the car seat won’t cause it!

… not to mention, most people have babies in the most germ infested environment around a ton of people they don’t know – at birth. After that exposure taking them out for a walk is certainly not a big deal.

Aw, again. Well, here in Europe almost everybody uses travel systems (especially Chicco’s, such as CT.01 and Bebé Confort’s, such as Loola). Most brands make them to be travel systems, you can only use the seat after using the stroller as a travel system (such check the websites out and you’ll see. And their using a Bugaboo whoch sells adaptors to use the frame as a travel system, so of course it is safe and great to use the car seat). All babies look normal, well, they ARE normal. My nephew is 1 month old and he uses a Peg’s travel system. It’s easier and is just as safe (or safer)!
If travel systems were dangerous they wouldn’t be sold, or if they did people would have to be told. Come on people, in the EU (where I am, so that’s why I’m talking about Europe) we cannot eat animal margarine because it isn’t sold anymore (I know this sounds like a stupid analogy but it’s not).
People should be more worried with walkers. Many countries have completely forbidden them.
Most kids go to the streets before 2 month old! Come on, it’s impossible to be 2 months locked up in your house (unless you have a nanny) and because there’s NOTHING wrong with taking your baby for a walk. Air is very good for a baby and besides most kids have problems now because they’re too protected from the environment they’ll end up living in.
But it’s their baby, it’s not our business. The baby’s healthy, they look fine and happy, who are us to say whatever?!

My doctor, told me the best thing I can do is for the 1st 6 weeks keep my baby inside. Germs are not just inside they are outside too. Their immune systems are NOT built up enough, thats why they say to try and keep babies inside, NOT THE MOM, the baby!
(RSV) infection is easy to catch (highly contagious). It is common for children to develop viral infections such as RSV if they are often exposed to infected people and have not built up immunity. There is no sure way to prevent respiratory illnesses in babies and children.

Deb- I see your point, but in order to keep the baby inside for the first 6 weeks, the mom DOES pretty much have to stay inside for 6 week as well if she doesn’t have a nanny or a family member who lives nearby. I don’t know of any mom who has been or is comfortable leaving her less than six week old baby with anyone other than a family member or a very, very close friend.
Anyway, the fact of the matter is, like you yourself pointed out, babies can be exposed to germs inside just as easily as they can outside! In otherwords, even if you were to keep them indoors for 6 months, they might still catch RSV or some other illness.
In fact, I have even heard that, as Ana said, it can actually be more dangerous for your baby in the long run if you over-protect them (keep them indoors until six week, make sure they’re in a sterile enviornment, etc.). A baby’s immune system cannot get stronger unless it is exposed to some germs. If the immune system isn’t exposed to those germs, then the baby won’t be able to fight off illness as well.
Also, a little fresh air is actually good for babies, especially in the summer when it isn’t so cold.

I think the issue with babies in car seats is actually to do with breathing problems not plagiocephaly (which could just as easily occur in a flat bassinet pram). In an infant seat the head is tilted forward which can occlude the trachea meaning they can’t breathe properly and can die.
That said, it’s impossible to make a judgement call from one picture. Who knows how far they were going, or as a pp said, the could have been in a cab, go for a walk, then catch a cab home in which case there’s really no other option.

just a comment on travel systems, i wudnt use my carseat as a travel system, as children arent recommended to be in them longer than 2hours, and thats pushing it.i’m in the u.k. tho and they mite b more strigent with safety etc. travel systems are widely sold – i know, i work in a pram shop, but there are restrictions, making them, to me, pointless.
