Daniel Day-Lewis talks about relishing parenthood

From his role as Gerry Conlon in In the Name of the Father to his role as ‘Bill the Butcher’ in Gangs of New York, it’s the role of ‘dad’ that clearly resonates the most for award-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis.  In a new interview, the 50-year-old — who has three sons, Gabriel, 12, Ronan, 9 and Cashel, 5 — describes himself as "quite a hands-on parent" whose life has been "enriched in every single way by my boys."  One of the more peculiar aspects of parenting — as it is for so many — involves the realization that in many ways we emulate our own parents, Daniel has found.

I, like my parents before me, am endlessly saying, ‘When I was a kid’ – and who cares about that? They don’t care. It’s their experience, that’s the important thing.  You recognize characteristics of your own parents in yourself that you swore as a kid you’d never be like. And yet you are.

Daniel scoffs at the misconception that he leads a reclusive life in his rural Ireland home with wife Rebecca Miller, noting that the life of a hermit is not at all conducive to life with little boys.

I’m not in hiding behind closed doors. How can you be a recluse in a house full of children?

Instead, Daniel says, the "quiet" life he leads with Rebecca — whom he describes as "normal" and "down to earth" — is only enhanced by their shared approach to parenting.

We agree entirely about how to raise our children, and we enjoy each other’s company.

Ronan and Cashel are Daniel’s children with Rebecca; Gabriel’s mother is French actress Isabelle Adjani.

His character, Gerry Conlon, wasn’t a member of the IRA. That was the point – he was a regular guy who was jailed for something he didn’t do.

He left Isabelle Adjani when he found out she was pregnant.

He’s a great actor and succeeds in keeping his family out of the spotlight. I didn’t know he had had more children after Gabriel!

I also heard he left Isabelle when she was pregnant. Last I heard, around the time of the Diabolique filming, she was raising her son by herself. If he is actively involved in raising Gabriel, then that’s great. Every child should have a father figure in their life.
