Jessica Alba: 'I want my kid to be a nerd'

Jessicaandcash Jessica Alba says she doesn’t fantasize about her baby, due in May or June, scoring the game-winning touchdown or being crowned prom queen — she fantasizes about 4.0′s.

I want my kid to be a nerd. I want him to be really, really smart and want him to be in the band or orchestra or something. No, it’s just a joke I have with my fiancé. He can’t be cool. Our kid has to be a nerd. If your child wants to be [something], you want to support him and whatever they want to do, but [becoming an actor is] not something that I’d be pushing my kid to do at all. I think it’s important for your kid to find their own way.

As for labor and delivery horror stories, Jessica says that since becoming pregnant she’s been forced to endure quite a few.  Fortunately she’s keeping them all in perspective, noting that "none of them really end in like, ‘I would never do that again.’"  She adds,

They always end in it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me. So, no matter what, it’s always the greatest gift someone has had in their life. Anything can happen and I always try to keep a very positive attitude and hopefully my baby feels that energy.

That positive attitude also extends to her diminishing wardrobe choices.  Her previous "tomboy" style of jeans, t-shirts and sneakers isn’t working with her burgeoning belly, Jessica says.

Now, nothing fits.  The jeans, you’ve got the panel so like the t-shirts are all like stretched in the wrong places and my shoes are too small.  Everything is just different.  I’m just all about cashmere sweaters and leggings kinda.

The biggest surprise of pregnancy so far has been the fatigue, Jessica says, and the 26-year-old admits she’s anxious to meet her baby.

I want it to be here right now. I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like until it happens.

The baby will be the first for Jessica and her fiancé Cash Warren.

So….since her & Cash know the sex of the baby, and she referred to it as a “he”, does this mean she’s having a boy?

Sarah’s note: No, it doesn’t necessarily mean anything. She’s been very clear that they want to keep the sex a secret, so I doubt she would be so careless with her words. It could just be the pronoun she chose, like how Matthew McCoughnahey keeps saying he even though he’s said very strongly that they want a delivery surprise.

- Paula on

so she is having a boy?

- tray on

not sharing the sex, ay?

- ang on

“I want HIM to be really, really smart and want HIM to be in the band or orchestra or something. No, it’s just a joke I have with my fiancé. HE can’t be cool.”

A slip about the sex or are they not finding out?

Sarah’s note: They do know the sex but are keeping it private.

- Meaghan on

you know she may be having a boy she kept saying him through the whole thing.

- Ava on

Did anyone notice that she said ‘him’ instead of ‘it’ or the ‘baby’

- wendy on

Him? Sounds like she just told us what the baby is. :-) Guess we’ll find out for sure this summer!

- Amanda on

it’s nice to see she has a positive attitude about the birth! hopefully everything will go smoothly :)

- Natalie on

I’m pretty sure it’s a boy now since in the first paragraph she’s referring to the baby as “him”. Seems like she gave the sex of the baby away without realizing it..LOL.

- J.J. on

being that she referred to the baby as ‘him’, im thinking theyre having a boy?! either way, the baby will be gorgeous =)

- dee on

So, is it a boy??

- amanda on

She sure says “he” a lot for someone who is keeping the baby’s gender a secret!

- kat on

Not sharing the sex, huh? She referred to the baby as a “he” several times in that first paragraph. :)

- Jennifer on

Anyone else notice in the above statement she said “I want HIM to be really smart” and she kept saying HIM but then she switched back to “my baby”. I think she may have spilled the beans…

- Bella on

Judging from the first part I’d guess she is having a boy… A lot of “him” in there!

She looks great, pregnancy is good to her. Lucky. lol.

- Heather on

Unless i missed something, it sounds like she’s having a Boy! she kept refering her baby as “He!” How exciting for them! :)

- Lauren P. on

Is it safe to assume Jessica is having a boy then? She kept referring to the baby as “he” or “him”. My best to her & Cash:)

- Chris on

She keeps on saying “he,he,he” during the first quote.. Does that mean she’s having a baby boy? Or is she just saying he instead of it? =S

- sam on

saying “he” doesn’t mean anything.

- tyra on

So, being ‘really, really smart’ or in the band or orchestra isn’t cool then? You have to be a cheerleader to be “cool”?

- Lib on

Sarah, Even if it is just the pronoun she uses, if she knows it’s a girl it would be weird to say ‘he’. Matthew McConnaughy also says ‘he’ as you point out but they clearly haven’t found out and maybe aren’t even far along enough yet(?).

I think she’s having a boy…… but whatever it is I’m sure it’ll be gorgeous!

Sarah’s note: She could be trying to throw off the press though, too — we’ve definitely seen it done before! For me, when someone’s said they want to keep the sex a secret, I wait for them to slip (like Jen Garner on Leno or Christina at the Rock the Vote party). I just think that if Jessica made a slip here, she would have caught herself before saying ‘he’ so many times. She also uses ‘kid,’ ‘child,’ and ‘it.’

I’m not saying it’s not a boy, but I just think people are a little quick to jump to the conclusion that it is.

- Hayley on

She must be having a boy…I think otherwise she would have said he as well as she in there. And, I think most people generalize nerds with being boys…although both my son and daughter have nerdy traits. Just my two cents.

- uggamugga.blogspot.com on

I see she is saying “him” a lot, but she also says “it” and “the baby” so I am not jumping the gun yet! I am hoping for a girl for Jessica and Cash!

- tink1217 on

gals gals…Jess’not tat stupid.. she perfectly knew u’d be speculating about the sex of the baby right after u read this…maybe she just kept saying “him” constantly in perfect purpose so u all would think its a boy..when actually the baby is a “she”…maybe tats just a technic to let u all speculate with the wrong information ;)

- lola on

Does anyone else take offense at the “NERD” part of this whole story? I’m sorry but if you’re going to label a smart kid who is in “an orchestra…or something” a nerd then what do you label a chubby kid who isn’t so great in math? Ridiculous. Take some omega-3′s Alba and STFU.

- K on

She’s either saying “HE” to throw everyone off big time or it’s a boy and she can’t hold it in any longer. Once you know the sex it becomes a habit to refer to it by it’s gender instead of “it” or “him” – at this point I’d say it’s a good indication that it’s a boy.

- J.M. on

this reminds me of when Jen Garner said she was keeping the sex of her baby a secret and she let it slip on the Jay Leno show by calling her baby a “she” hahaha

it’s hard keeping it a secret, especially when you’re talking about the baby… we’ll just pretend we didn’t read that interview, i think Jess would appreciate that lol

- Natalie on

Yeah, she may be saying she wants to keep it a secret. But, I have a feeling she let it go. I know if I knew I was having a girl, I couldn’t continually say “he.” We’ll see this summer.

- Nicole on

All ‘he’s aside, I really think she’s having a girl, you don’t just slip that many times. I have a feeling she may be purposely throwing everyone off ;) That and one clear difference between people I’ve known who had girls and those who had boys, the ones with girls were exhausted, boys they usually were pretty normal until the end.

- Amanda on

*laughs* I love how everyone can’t just look through the comments posted, they all get excited and post the same comment, just in case someone didn’t notice that particular pronoun.

- jen on

They are both so beautiful! She just glows! This might be a really stupid, off-topic question…but what does Cash Warren do? Is he an actor?

Sarah’s note: He has a business that invests in production companies.

- Ang on

I also think it is a slip of the tongue. I think IT will be a BOY.

- kim on

Ok 4 x’s she referred to the baby as ‘he or him’. She said ‘kid or child’ 5 x’s. Makes you wonder if she accidently spilled the goss lol or she just doesn’t want to say the term ‘it’. I can understand that!! ‘He’ is more used as a pronoun in general more so than ‘She’ so maybe that’s what she doing just saying ‘He’ instead of ‘it’.

- Doreen on

i’ve always found that for some reason a lot of people automatically refer to their unborn child as a “he” whether or not they know what they’re having. it’s probably just society’s tendency to think of the world in male terms (yes that’s changing but very slowly). plus it would probably get annoying to say “he or she” all the time, and using “it” just seems a bit cold.

- mn on

She might just be trying to throw everybody off, by referring to the baby as a he. That being said I have thought from the start she is having a boy, so I still think she is.

- fallon on

I am going to find it really funny if she has a girl! I don’t think she would spill the beans that easily. She is too smart for that. ;)

- Elyse on

jen, I don’t think it’s necessarily because everyone got excited and posted before reading. A lot of times there is a delay in getting the posts up since they have to be approved. I know there have been several times that I made a comment that was the same as someone else’s but it was just because when I posted mine theirs wasn’t showing up yet.

- legemc on

Amanda, lola, and mn- ITA! Come on, Jessica’s not stupid, and, like Amanda said, you don’t just slip that many times. True, Jennifer Garner and Christina Aguilera DID slip…But Christina caught herself almost immeditely and I think Jennifer may have as well. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Jennifer even admitted her slip when she caught herself (Christina simply giggled and said, “We’ll see!” when asked to confirm that she was expecting a boy after her slip).

Poppy Montgomery also slipped….and immediately admitted it. Anyway, as mn pointed out, lots of people refer to their unborn baby as “he” regardless of whether or not they know the sex. Understandably, most people are uncomfortable referring to the baby as “it” and “he or she” would get to be kind of a mouthful after awhile.

While I personally agree with Nicole that if I knew I was having a girl, I couldn’t continually say “he”. However, we must keep in mind that we are “regular” people, not celebrities. Most celebs are probably used to having to tell little white lies to throw off the press or protect their privacy.

- CelebBabyLover on

No offense, but you don’t have to be “stupid” to slip up. I didn’t want anyone to know what the sex of my child was but once I found out for myself, I kept referring to my baby as “he”(and I, in fact, had a boy). After that, I kept telling myself I wouldn’t spill his name… soon enough, I started calling him by name to people. It’s something that happens. Who knows, she really could be just throwing us off. We won’t know ’til the little one is here:)

- Kate on

I always thought people would always say “he” when they didn’t know the sex of the baby. I’ve seen this used in movies and books.
