I think that there are very obvious dangers that can happen with childbirth. Maybe Margot has never given birth with comments like that.

My uncle was breech, and he came out just fine… and other than still living with his parents at the age of 45, he’s still fine.

I know that sometimes there are reasons for these things to happen, but I can’t help but feel that the dangers associated with birth are rather exaggerated in most cases.

My first was breech and large. There is no way they would have allowed me nor would I have wanted to deliver a breech baby vaginally. We did attempt a external version, but it didn’t work. I would not want to be at risk for the largest part of my baby (head) getting stuck or needing an emergency csection in that precarious situation. I think the standard of care dictates csection because of the risk to baby and mother and the lawsuits that would ensue in this day and age. Best wishes on their beautiful new baby regardless of how she was delivered into the world.

congrats to jonny and michelle – i bet piper is adorable!! they seem like such a fun-loving couple. about the breech thing – it doesn’t matter what hospital you are at or how well trained your doctor is, it can be very dangerous to deliver a baby breech. i was a breech baby, butt first , and my mom delivered me vaginally only because they didn’t know i was breech until i was coming out. in 1982 i guess they didn’t routinely do an ultrasound to check the baby’s position when you are admitted to the hospital. thankfully, times have changed. the only reason i fit through the canal at all was that i under 6 pounds (i was 5 weeks early). even being that small i still fractured my hip, they had to pull me out with forceps, i was deprived of oxygen since the cord was so compressed, i had to be in the nicu for a few days, and my poor mother ended up with a fourth degree tear and had to have surgery to repair the damage. later when my mom had twins my sister was head down, but my brother was feet first and he came out fine. so the point is you never know what may happen. some babies might end up fine like my brother or not okay like me. i believe it’s better to err on the side of caution and do a c-section rather than attempt to deliver a breech baby. hope my story helps

Speaking from a mom that had a breech baby I will tell you that the risk of trying to vaginally deliver a breech baby are far too great. Even with the most well trained doctor, serious problems even death can result. I just wanted to state the facts about that topic!

In response to Katie’s comment, the hospital where she had the baby does not have the best reputation locally. In fact everyone that I know from Danville that has had a baby has gone else where for their prenatal care and delivery. Maybe that explains the inability to deliver the baby breach…

Katie- ITA! I also don’t understand why they chose to induce labor more than a week before her due date (I know this particular post doesn’t say anything about the labor being induced, but just last night there was a post about them being at the Boom Boom Room event and saying they were going to have labor induced). In any case, congrats to them!

Sarah’s note: No, Chris Noth and his girlfriend were having labor induced for medical reasons, one being issues with the placenta. Michelle was not induced and is based out of Virginia, she was not in LA for the BBR. She was very open about wanting a natural delivery.

Why are doctors so vehemently against delivering babies breech? I don’t get it. If you’re trained right, you should be able to deliver a breech baby rather than immediately jump to c-section, which has inherent risks as well.
