Update: Backstreet Boys Brian Littrell's wife Leighanne launches bag line

Update from Leighanne:

I’ve read all your comments, and just because I made the first bag out of a sheet doesn’t mean they are made out of sheets now. I used a sheet to get a pattern. These bags are not made in a factory, or in China like most items that you purchase. These bags are made here in the US, made by actual people not machines and we only use the best fabrics. All of the bags are reversible so essentially you get two bags in one.

I have just recently started offering these bags that are not reversible for half the price! I carried these bags the whole time I was breast feeding and when I just needed a diaper bag I used the back pack, they have tons of room! The back packs I use for everything still! I use it not only for my bag, but it has room for all my son’s things as well.

We have new items coming very soon. I hope you all give them a chance. It’s hard to judge something without having actually tested it yourself.

Originally posted November 15th:Leighanne Littrell, wife of Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell, has just launched her own line of bags. Being a mom, she understands all too well the diaper bag dilemma — there is just no such thing as a perfect one. So she designed her own, one that met all her needs and then some. She describes her inspiration on her wyleebags.com site.

After I had my son [Baylee Littrell], we started flying with him by the age of 3 months. I was breastfeeding at the time and used a breastfeeding pillow. I loved having the breastfeeding pillow on the plane with me because it was perfect for Baylee to sleep on as well as to feed him on. The only problem with this is that the pillow is a funny shape and I didn’t have a bag that would hold the pillow and all the other things that go into a diaper bag: diapers, baby wipes, medicines, etc.

So one day I bought a sewing machine (I never sewed on one in my life) and took a sheet and started making a bag. I made the pattern and started using the bag. Before long I worked out the kinks and viola, I had the perfect bag for me.  People would give me compliments and I ended up making a few for gifts, and then started selling quite a few.

What started as a desire for the perfect diaper bag has expanded into a complete bag line of back packs, hand bags, handy sacks, clutches and of course the diaper bag! The diaper bags come in a backpack style because Leighanne loved having her hands free when toting Baylee around.

I made this diaper bag a backpack for a reason. Often I would use a carrier to hold Baylee so I could have my hands free, not to mention that babies seem to really like them. And when we would travel, it was great to have him on my front and the diaper bag on my back. The diaper bag stays secure so when I lean over it doesn’t fall off my shoulder. I still have my arms free! Alas, I can still hold tickets, purchase food,……whatever and not have to put anything down or worry about holding Baylee.

The name of the line, Wylee Bags, was inspired by her son as well, Baylee’s full name is Baylee Thomas Wylee Littrell. The prices range from $336 to more then $600 and she is still working on launching the site. When all is said and done it looks like she will have bags, bag charms and a jewelry line.

These diaper bags sound great but I guess she’s designing them for celebrities because ordinary Moms don’t have $300 to $600 to spend on a diaper bag.

- JK on

I know! Where in the world does she get the cojones to charge over $300 for something she first made from a SHEET?!

- M on

The poor craftsmanship certainly doesn’t justify the cost. I’m not impressed with her designs. The bags do not look very functional or attractive. The pink corset diddly featured above is tacky.

- landroverdisco on

Uh, Those bags are pretty but NOT practical. $300-$600 for a silk (lets talk snagging in a major way) diaper bag??? Not for the everyday mom or even most celebrities!!

- A on

I don’t mind spending money on a good bag – even a diaper bag – and will admit to having spent that much on my own favorites; however, I must agree that these look like rather cheap products. Could just be that they are not my taste, but even if they were, seems I could make them myself just as she did? Perhaps they will improve with time?

- brannon on

They look awfully tiny to me. As I’ve said in comments before, I don’t have kids of my own yet but I’ve been babysitting for years and I’ve had to pack diaper bags when getting ready to go out with the kids. If those were created to fit a nursing pillow AND all the extras, I can’t imagine there’s enough room for all of it to fit without having to take everything out and repack it every time you need something.

Personally, I like the bags from LL Bean … they’re big and they’ve got tons of compartments for all the necessary items and if something happens to the bag, LL Bean will replace it free of charge.

- Cait on

Not to be negative, but those bags just don’t look functional. You would have to stop, set something down, take the bag from your back and open the draw strings. $335??

- plannbb on

Love them!!!

- Poshie T on

The bags are awful looking, and why would someone pay over 300$ for that? They look like something someone in a sewing class would make.

- Angela Palmieri on

I would have to agree that those bags don’t look very functional. I don’t mean this in a rude way, but I think they look like they were really cheaply made. They definitely don’t look worth the $336 price tag. Ouch!!

- E on

OK, so although I don’t have kids yet, I babysat a lot so I’ve had a look around the Wylee Bags website (which wasn’t working for me until last night). I admit the designs are… erm… a bit questionable, as is the functionality. And agree they’re quite expensive for bags made from polyester sheet.
All I have to say for Leighanne’s defense is that the backpacks shown here are just backpacks, not the actual diaper bags (OK, the “corset” one shown here IS a diaper bag). And at least she tries to make something different than other celebrity wives…

- Aleah on

Those bags are kind of trashy-looking. I can’t imagine that there are enough people who 1) wouldn’t mind paying $300 – $600 for a diaper bag AND 2) would want diaper bags that looked like these bags. They’re garish and, as others here have said, they don’t look like they’re roomy enough to be practical. These might be great for a different segment of the diaper bag market, but I don’t think they will capture any significant attention in the upscale market she was going for.

- lilianic on

I think they are very pretty bags, but they appear to be ridiculously overpriced. Just my opinion.

- Robin M. on

Those are the most awful looking bags I’ve ever seen. Beyond that, I agree they don’t seem practical. Good on her for solving the problem she had about carrying stuff around, though.

- Keis on

- Leighanne Littrell on

i still don;t get it. Where is the price comming from? If they are so pricy because each are handmade then maybe she could just sell the pattern? I am sure they are well made and adorable, but come on! 600?!

- morgan on

ok, AFTER i wrote that previous post i checked out the website, they are very very cute and if i had money to toss around i would love to have one. The “baylee Blue” is 517$ and made from “100% polyester”. As mush as i love a ctue bag, it’s too much for something made from polyester!

- Morgan on

In my opinion these bags are WAY overpriced! They are not my style. Even if they were, I would not pay this much for a diaper bag made of cloth.

- Nicole on

They are really cute but too pricey for most moms. I think if they were priced in the $50-100 range they would become popular since a lot of people are looking for unique, funky parenting accessories. I couldn’t justify spending $300-600 on a diaper bag.

- Chris on

Oh wow, that’s a lot of money for a bag! I have a question though; what is a bag charm? I just want a simple diaper bag, I don’t really care about decorating it with various charms to make it my own. If it holds baby supplies and some of my things comfortably and resists wear and tear I’m all for it. Wylee bags look ok, but there’s not much talk on how durable they are.

What is it with all these “new mommy/wife of celeb” baby bag lines? At least most of these bag makers seem to do some business research on the bags before putting them on the market. The quality and price of these bags just seems like this is an impulsive thing. I hope it works out for her, but these bags are not for me.

- Jen on

HOLY COW! The “New York” bag is gorgeous. However $420 is waaaay too much for a diaper bag. Especially one that has to be dry cleaned. It doesn’t matter they are reversible, that is still a lot of money to ask from “regular” moms (i.e. non-celebrity).
Are these bags one of a kind?
If they are not, then if they were in the $100-$200 range, that would be perfect.
I can’t tell on the bag’s website, but what demographic is she trying to reach? I wish the company success, but I think the prices are too high.

- Jennifer Kountz on

Want a good diaper bag?

http://www.jampacked.ca

I recieved the JP Messenger when my daughter was born last January – it’s all I’ve used and get compliments on it ALL the time. It’s functional, practical and totally stylish!! Even my hubby likes it.

- Christine on

Her response sounded a bit snippy. I realize she was just defending her website and her design, but she could have just said “Yes, that’s right, one of my bags is made out of a sheet!”. I think the prices are way too high for any diaper bag. I’m not sure what makes them worth that much money because it seems like the fabrics would stain easily, rip or tear, and get ruined rather quickly. Also, being the wife of a past celebrity doesn’t make you a celebrity or amazing designer.

- Colleen on

Haha. It’s really refreshing to see regular moms standing up to these ridiculous prices. I am usually shocked to see the prices on almost everything on this site. I can’t believe anyone would pay $100 for a normal baby blanket, $600 for a stroller, etc. It amazes me. Even if I had the money to waste on such extravagances, I doubt I would. Our $200 Kolcraft double stroller is just fine with me, and we love to shop at Target for our kids. We have a $40 Eddie Bauer backpack diaper bag that we love, and I thought it was expensive! It would be really nice to have a neat and unique diaper bag like those that Leighanne has designed, but a person would have to be as crazy to spend $450 on it.

Leighanne, I think it is wonderful that you took a problem (not fitting the nursing pillow in your bag) and made an effort to fix it. I think it’s great that you are doing something that you enjoy, and are sharing it with us. But I hope that you and possibly other designers like you might take these comments to heart and start designing and pricing your items for normal people.

- Stephanie on

Leighann obviously has great taste, the bags are cute. How about a less expensive line? Maybe something not reversable, made with cotton and has less expensive hardware? That way she could market to everyone. The super rich, and the regular every day moms!

- morgan on

I thought my mother-in-law was a little spendy when she bought me a Tokidoki bag from Le Sportsac for my diaper bag (the huge backpack one in the Amore print) for about $200, but I can see there are bags out there that make my head want to spin. I do like that they’re made in America (if they actually are) but polyester bags? Isn’t that a flammable material (I know pretty much all material is flammable but isn’t it more flammable than say, cotton?) Maybe if these were half the price and made of cotton I would take them seriously, but right now I’ve written these bags off as something only a celebrity would be crazy enough to buy (like those Orbit carseats!)

- Rebecca on

Stephanie, I totally agree. When any business owner, small or large scale, doesn’t listen to their potential clients and take criticism, constructive and bad, under serious consideration, they run the risk of making them feel like that business owner doesn’t care about them and their feelings and that customer will go elsewhere. Leighanne needs to take these comments and instead of defending herself against them really needs to sit down and think, “How can I make my product more affordable for a majority of moms? How can I attract a wide variety of moms?” Her husband isn’t in the Backstreet Boys anymore so trading on his name isn’t going to work that well (although some of the teenagers that were screaming for the Backstreet Boys in their heyday are moms or expectant moms so maybe some of the die hard fans will save up to buy the bags.)

Sarah’s note: Brian is in the Backstreet Boys.

- Rebecca on

I don’t understand why everyone’s getting upset about the price. It’s no surprise that the baby industry is overpriced in many facets as it plays off the “have to get the best for my child” mentality that gets beaten into new mothers’ brains.

This is the same group of people that told me it is reasonable to pay $900 for a baby stroller (even though it is made of plastic and not designed to protect your baby anymore than stopping it from falling out).

- Stef on

Sarah, I understand that he’s still in the band, but what I meant was they’re not recording songs, touring, or any of that. They’re all off doing their own thing so simply trading on his name isn’t going to do it anymore. I know some of the other guys have done plays and such but I have no idea what Brian has been doing.

Sarah’s note: I’m confused by what you’re writing! They just released a new album in October and having been supporting and promoting that. They’ve been playing their latest single on my radio station.

- Rebecca on

Sarah, I haven’t heard anything about an album they released but the only time I listen to the radio is in the car, so it’s possible I’ve missed the single (though I’m not sure the station I listen to in San Diego is playing it because they are awfully repetitious with songs, so if they were playing it I should have heard it.)

- Rebecca on

These prices make no sense at all. Even if I had money to spend I wouldn’t spend this kind of money on a diaper bag. Honestly, who would? 600$ used to be my monthly income!

- Sarita on

Rebecca : I’m a huge fan of the BSB and I can tell you that Brian is still in the band and that they are still recording songs, promoting, etc…Their last album was released in october. To reply to what you said about the ” die hard fans who will save up to buy the bags” well that’s ridiculous ! Most of us are not kids or teens anymore and even if we were, it’s not because we are fans that we would do or buy anything that is related to them.Even if I’m a huge fan and that Brian is my favorite BSB I would never spend so much money for a diaper bag simply because it’s Brian’s wife. Like everybody said they are way too overpriced. So please, stop judging the fans !

I’m sorry Leighanne that you had to read that,I know that is must not be funny for you but this is the truth. Those bags are too overpriced ( like a lot of baby items that celebrities buy ).

But honestly, the rest like the handi saks are really adorable and less expensive and I can’t wait to see the rest ( not because I’m a fan Rebecca but because I think that wyleebags is very cute).

BTW, excuse my English, I’m not an english speaker. So it’s possible that I made some mistakes.

- Christine on

Stef, this bag is certainly doesn’t rank in the “the best I can get for my baby” category, imo.

I honestly don’t see what’s wo wrong with going to Target for your baby needs. There is some nice stuff there and a lot of it is cheaper than some things advertised on this site and many other baby sites.

I don’t have the money that some celebs spend on their kids, I just want something functional, that will last a little while and is cute. :D

- J on

Rebecca, I’m with you – I had no idea the Backstreet Boys were still together!

- brannon on

I think if I were going to spend that kind of money I might as well buy some Louise Vutton shoes or purse cus that can be used as a regular purse as well or jimm chus(sp?). I think companys that are starting out need to be more realistic and not take advantage of their families celebrity status. I love BSB since day one

- diana on

I live in Europe and paid $1100 for my stroller, the Stokke Xplory and while it’s a ridiculous price for most AMERICANS, it’s practical for us. If we lived in America still we wouldn’t never consider such an expensive stroller.. HOWEVER.. our first American stroller for our first child lasted all of 6 months before it just fell into pieces on the cobblestone streets. It seemd almost daily something broke off. We have since bought 3 other strollers and have no been satisfied and all you can realize is they were cheap. So we paid a ton for a stroller, so what? Does it help when I tell you I don’t have a car? I don’t DRIVE? I walk, bus, or bike everywhere (soon with 2 kids). I have to get groceries every 2 days in order to be able to carry it all home! We have very rough streets and gas is $8.50 a gallon! I think $1100 for something I will use everyday for 4 years and not have to replace is money well spent. I also have the baby bed, sleeping bag, rain cover, etc. I still need the foot muff for winter and I just spent 50 euro on the diaper bag.. ON SALE. Normally it’s 99 euro. (so more in dollars.)

With that said.. I normally would also not spend even $50 on a diaper bag, but I did because the one by Stokke attaches on the stroller with snaps by the handle and is out of the way. The shopping bag was nice, but I need that for shopping and got the diaper bag.

I have to agree with the price of these Wylee Bags being outrageous though.. I can’t afford it, it isn’t going to drastically improve my life, and it is dry clean only?! Ummm no.. If it changed dirty diapers FOR me well then, that’s another thing.. can it do that?

I just wanted to comment on the people bashing those who buy expensive strollers. Most Americans don’t need them as they use them to cruise the mall or walk around their smoothly paved neighborhoods.. yes it would be foolish for you to spend that much on a stroller, but don’t judge those of us who need higher quality…..

Oh and Stokke has a 2 yr warranty.. anything breaks, they have it to you in only a few days and without questions. Service like that is priceless!

Hmm and also.. where I live you can resell your strollers and get 50-75% of what you paid for it provided you don’t trash it!! When we bought it, we looked at other strollers and they were all 500 euro or more. The only cheaper models were American Gracos which as I said before.. just laugh at you and break in 100 pieces in a very short time over here in Europe!!!

- Laura on

They are very cute for a diaperbag…lol

Love them Leighanne.

- Tiffany P. on

Laura, did you know that there was a recall on some Stokke Xplory strollers?

http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml08/08113.html

I also have to politely disagree on your comment about most Americans basically not needing nicer strollers just because we apparently cruise malls and have smooth pavements. I live in the New England area where the beach is an hour away on one side and the mountains are an hour away on the other side. I’m sure these people most likely read up on the product before the bought it, REGARDLESS of the fact that the the product and the families are AMERICAN or not.

- J on

Christine, I was a fan (not die hard, never went to a concert but I liked their music) and I’m now 24 years old and I would have to save up to buy a $600 diaper bag because I’m a stay-at-home mom married to a man in the military. I wasn’t assuming that those people that were fans in the beginning were still teenagers, I’m well aware that their heyday was almost 10 years ago, but some of us don’t have that kind of expendable income.

- Rebecca on

Leighanne, I will start by saying that the bags are lovely, I particularly love the Ellen print, I’m a sucker for chocolate brown combos. I love that your bags are made in the US, that’s fantastic, we need more jobs here with all the companies that are outsourcing to other countries.

You stated “It’s hard to judge something without having actually tested it yourself.” Would you pay $600 for something you hadn’t tested out, blindly on faith? I wouldn’t and I’m willing to bet a lot of other moms wouldn’t either. I spent six MONTHS researching double strollers, testing out different brands, until I settled on one that I liked, and it was $150. I couldn’t justify spending $600 on something that I wouldn’t be absolutely sure would work for us.

I noticed that they’re dry clean recommended, that’s not really that practical for moms. Diaper bags get dirty, I know mine does, what would happen if we were to throw one of the bags in the regular washing machine? (Front or top loading.) I wouldn’t want to buy it for that reason also, I don’t buy clothes that are dry clean only because I have a 2 month old that’s a bit of a spitter, I don’t want to take out a tab at the local dry cleaner.

I think if you were to address these issues your line would be very successful.

- Rebecca on

The bags are gorgeous but I cannot afford one. I would be happy to test drive one though. LOL

- Keri on

Cute bags. I don’t understand the criticism. There are plenty of lower priced bags if you want to buy them. These are obviously for those that choose to spend that much. You have a choice.

- terri on

“It’s hard to judge something without having actually tested it yourself.” Leighanne Littrell

True, but for the average person it’s hard to justify spending that amount of money to “test” something. JMO Good luck with your business, though. :-)

- Emily's Aunt on

I can’t fathom spending that much for a diaper bag, even if it fit my Boppy. I just bought a large tote bag from Gap (on clearance)that the pillow fits in and organized with individual soft bags I made from old pillow cases and needle and thread.
Overall, for my well organized and incredibly function diaper bag I spent less than $50 and two hours (sewing). As someone who is frequently out with three kids under the age of 5, I needed a bag that worked for me, so I made it happen.
But geeze…several hundred dollars for something to tote diapers and snacks?? I can’t even imagine! The starting price for those bags is more than my child’s Amby bed package! It’s more than our entire nursery set!
They are kind of cute (but kind of tacky too…) I just can’t fathom spending that kind of money on a diaper bag!

- Kait on

If $300+ baby products are what this blog is going to say is normal, I’m not reading it anymore. This is insane. The bags are UGLY! I’d rather buy a trendy $30 bag at Target than this skanky looking crap! The woman who designed these is the wife of a defunct boy-band member. It’s sad because she has no real design skills. I am embarassed for the blog that this post is even here. GET REAL!!!

- Bette on

Spending $300-$600 for a diaper bag is insane. Period. Not everyone is married to a celebrity. Some of us want to spend our money on more important things for our children, like groceries and an education.

- It'sme on

The bags are definately unique and kudos to her for DIY’n for something she needed, and turning it into a business.
But I agree, that is WAY expensive for a diaper bag, she absolutely has the right to charge whatever she wants for them. But at that price, doesnt look like too many people here would be interested in buying them..
In my math…selling 6 at 100 bucks sure beats selling nothing at 600.
Just my thought though.

- Delilah on

So Americans should be relegated to cheap things that break easily, but Europeans automatically need high quality? Wow, you might want to lower your head a little there. With your nose so high in the air, you might trip on something and break your continental neck.

- M on

Now THESE are something I can definitely see at a swag/gift party. Expensive and cute enought to be a fad for celebs. :D

- Jen on

Very expensive – not for the every day mom. I guess she’s gearing towards rich people. I guess in her mind $600 isn’t expensive for a diaper bag, but for the average working family, do you spend that much money on a diaper bag or pay your monthly bills? I wish her luck, but she had better sell her bags to celebrities in California. I’ll buy all my baby needs at Target or Babies R Us. They appreciate the “average person” who works hard for their money.

- Linda on

I think Leighanne’s idea is wonderful
I have a nephew and niece and it hard to find things to put their nessasary things in when they come for a visit. It can be very handy to have something like that and they look great!
I would buy something like that

- Catherine on

When I heard that Leighanne is going to launched her own line of bags I couldn’t wait to see it. And I really love them, everything looks really great. Well I don’t have any kids yet so I don’t need diaper bags but the idea is really great. I don’t agree with some of the comments but I won’t say anything because I don’t think it’s a right place to argue.
I’v been bsb fan since day one but I’m going to buy her suff not of the fact that I’m a bsb fan but because they look really cute and special. And I’m really happy that there are not only the diaper bags but also mini bags for those like me who don’t have children lol
Well what I want to say that I support you Leighanne, I’m happy that you stared doing something that you like and what you belive in.
God Bless

- Rita on

Love the designs and the bags look like they have been made with the fashionable yet practical mother in mind. I do not find these bags over priced when I see women spend double on a handbag or shoes which have no other purpose than for fashion. It is lovely to see someone create something for the fashion conscious mother. Being a mom doesn’t mean being a dag.

- Melanie on

i dont want to be mean but i think thats CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SPENDING YOUR MONEY ON A BAG THAT COST 350$ TO 600$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DONT TO SOUND CRUEL HERE BUT I RATHER GO TO target and buy a bag thats cheap and cute that only cost like 50$ and also the bags seem kindy tacky because they look like they could tear apart easliy like for example if you have a dogs at your house and you left your on the couch proably your dog would tear it apart and i would be very angry if my dog tear my bag apart that 600$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I COULD MAKE THOSE MYSELF INSEAD OF WASTING lots and LOTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS OF MONEY IM sorry leighanne but maybe 600$ on a bag for doesnt mean any thing for you because your rich doesnt mean that moms would buy some thing so tacky that cost so much money im serisous leighanne 600$ on a bag!!!!!!!?????????????? try RETHINKING on the PRICES again!!!!!!!! that will help alot!!! i hope the luck for!!!!!!! Wow, you guys are acting ridiculous! Leave the poor girl alone. She needed something practical, she designed something cute, and she’s (smartly) using her/her husband’s statuts/place in life to earn money.

If you can’t afford them/don’t like them, don’t buy them! Easy as that.

Yes, as many of you said, you can go to Target and get a bag for $50. Hooray for you! That bag is probably not the greatest quality, and mostly likely not made in the US. She is selling handmade in the US bags. That’s going to naturally raise the price of anything.

Stop being so cruel to an entrepreneur. If you don’t like what she’s selling, get something else and don’t complain about the thing you’re not buying.

- Kaston on

Some of these comments are alittle cruel. Leighanne’s just trying to make her own living. Her bags are very cute and realistic. I would definitely spend those prices on a bag like that. And its not because I’m a huge Backstreet/Brian Bittrell fan. But i could see using them if I ever had a kid, which I hope I have multiple of someday. Good luck and God bless to all of you & Leighanne Littrell and her family!

By the way : I know this post was alittle late.

- kaylee on

I have a Wylee bag and scarf and I LOVE them. Yes they are a tad expensive, but you pay for quality! I support Leighanne on this project and think it’s great she’s trying to make a living for herself doing what she loves.

- mel on

I have a Wylee tote. I love how it is reversible and it is so pretty! I paid $75 for it and it was worth every penny. The fabric is strong and feels great. Check out her website at wyleebags.com, Leighanne has lots of new, and more affordable items!
