Wessexes announce name of new baby

One day after taking their new son home, Sophie, Countess of Wessex and her husband Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, announced that they have named the baby James Alexander Philip Theo Mountbatten-Windsor.  According to the BBC, the royal couple consulted with both the Queen and Sophie’s father before making their choice, and both were said to be "content" with the name.

James’ title will be Viscount Severn; Although his full surname is Mountbatten-Windsor, he will only use Windsor, BBC reports.  He joins big sister Lady Louise Windsor, 4, at home.  Sophie, 42, delivered James on Dec. 17 via C-section.

the name flows great until “Theo” Don’t get me wrong, I love the name Theo, it just feels incomplete at the end of James Alexander Philip.

Are they required to consult with the Queen, or did they chose to consult her, because honestly, I couldn’t imagine having to get someone else’s approval on what I was going to name my child.

Oh, no! I was so hopping that William’s son would be James so that we’d finally have a King James again, lol.

Love the name, but agree with janine, James Alexander Philip Theodore would have sounded better.

All the best to James, his parents and big sister.

Great name! I didn’t like Theo either, until read that it was the name of Sophie’s grandfather. Now I think it’s sweet.

I think it’s a lovely name. I like the royal tradition of multiple names, and I like “Theo” as much as “Theodore” so it works too.

I believe as he is the grandchild of the sovereign, Edward and Sophie had to consult her Majesty.

I remember Elizabeth’s own Parents informing King George about the choice of names they had for her sister Margaret and he getting very upset, so they had to change them.

Lovely name!
Apparently James Alexander was their personal preference; Philip is after his paternal grandfather and Theo comes from Sophie’s side. Her grandfather’s name was actually Theophilius – they probably thought it was a bit too much! (and it would clash with Philip, too). They used the same pattern with Louise (Alice Elizabeth Mary) – a traditional first name, following names after relatives from both sides of the family.

I think people should learn from them how to give their children beautiful, timless names!

My favorite name for a boy! How great is that?!

Sorry, but having Prince Edward named is son James, William won’t be able to name his son James (in case he likes it)? Oh, I agree King James sounds pretty good, too!

Yes, the Sovereign must be consulted. That’s why Queen Victoria was named Alexandrina Victoria (while her parents wanted to name her Elizabeth – her uncle, the King, wanted to annoy her father at any cost), why Princess Beatrice was not named Annabel (the Queen did not approve), and why most of Queen Victoria’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren have Victoria and Albert in their names.

So each of Queen Elisabeth’s four children have now two children of their own, making it eight grandchildren in total, 4 boys and 4 girls ranging from one week to 30 years old. And both her eldest and youngest grandkids were ‘early christmas presents’. How amazing is that?

Actually it doesn’t matter what William named his son, if he has one, when his son becomes king he may not adopt it as his “king” name. Charles has already said when he ascends the throne he will be known as King George (I think – not sure of the number either)rather than Charles III.

Anyway back to the baby – he is lovely and so happy they have had another baby. Sophie had an eptopic pregnancy before having her 2 babies, so its great to see them overcome that.
