Sophie Ellis-Bextor talks about her 'happy surprise'

When she discovered she was pregnant shortly after she began dating Richard Jones — whom she ultimately married in 2005 — British singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor admits that she was taken by surprise.  Once the shock wore off, the couple were thrilled to welcome Sonny, their now 3-1/2-year-old son.  Says Sophie,

I didn’t expect to have a baby quite so soon – I’d been going out with my husband for only six weeks. But it all worked out really well so it was a happy surprise.

Sophie, 28, said recently that she’d like to have more children.  Sonny is the first child for both she and Richard.

I think you meant “Sonny is the first child for both her and Richard.” The grammar works like this: If you were to take out the reference to Richard, you would say, “Sonny is the first child for her” – not she. When you add on another person, the sentence still has to work when you leave them out.

BTW how is Sophie’s son Sonny doing? The last I heard he was living with the after effects of a bout of meningitis or something.

If she didn’t want to have a baby so soon in a relationship maybe she shouldn’t have been sleeping with her boyfriend so early in the relationship.
